Title: We see you looking...
Post by: Vertex on November 06, 2008, 09:18:32 PM
I've had some probs that kept me away from this community for a time...

Both with real life issues...
and with this forum in general...

I won't go into specifics but I remember when this forum was just an idea in a couple people's heads...
I remember when I had a title that proudly stated I helped create this forum...
Well that got taken away, and was a total surprise to me at the time. Put a very sour taste in my mouth when it did.
Real life probs pulled me away from the game and meshing and with what happened.. I didn't feel like fighting to keep meshing.
Well, it's been a long time and I really miss doing it. I don't claim to have been one of the "best" meshing contributors to the community but I like to think
people enjoyed what I put out as much as I enjoyed doing it.

I don't state the past to complain about anything just stating why I've been away. Don't want anyone thinking I just got bored. I have no bad feelings over happened or even at this point remember who did what.. Just wanted to clear the air on why I disappeared. I've missed the FF community and am happy to be returning, not sure how many are still left but let's see what cobwebs I can sweep away.

Anyways you can't keep a southerner down and we ALWAYS come back to finish what we started..
Stay tuned...

That's right, we southern boys are made of tough stuff.  I can't wait to see you back in action Vertex!  I'm sorry that my real involvement with the community came around the same time as the eclipse of yours.  I look forward to seeing you around the boards.

Glad to see you are returning Vertex/Bobby... It's hard to stay away from here too long. There is just too many addictive things about the community and the game(s) that get under your skin and haunt your creative thoughts when you pick up comics or become inspired by something you doodle on a napkin while talking on the phone. Sooner or later you find yourself logging in with work to show off.

Plus I'm really curious to see what projects you will take on once you get up to speed on the new tools to use with the game..

It's really cool to see that you're coming back to doing more work.

I'm very fond of your meshes and even more fond of your keyframes. If you looked at my site, you can see many hexes and skins that have used your work and made for your work.

Anyway, yeah, it's nice to see you're back to do some more things. I'm looking forward to it.

Okay I'm animating a project to get my feet wet and figure I should ask a few questions to make sure I'm correct on how things were for notes for the tracks.

in original FF things like take_flight and landing from flight didn't actually work ingame. The game used jump_stand instead and it's landing equivalent. in FFVTR did they fix this or not? I can't remember.  Also honestly area,direct,ranged.. all were basically just the same thing with the use of leave_hand as the command for the power to activate which seperated the animation from melee which used contact. Basically what I'm getting at I guess is were there any track commands in FFVTR that were different than FF that I don't remember because I'm wondering if some of the types of animations I should bother to even include like take_flight and so on.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: GogglesPizanno on November 12, 2008, 11:13:42 AM
I think Renegade would be the man to talk to about specific FFvTR stuff as I believe he has gone FFvTR only.
Others i think still just model and animate using the old FF methods as almost all of those meshes will work in the new game.

Alas, no. FFX's mlogreader Python module is used to detect characters flying (by enabling and reading animation message in ff.log) – and jump_stand is all it has needed.

Extremely glad to have you back, BTW. Thanks for the great work.

Oh I suppose I should mention... standard vxmale base skins won't work with any of my newer meshes
(oh bobby why ya wanna go and do that??)

Simple, I like to be all I can be, and with the altered foot mapping I can produce meshes of crazy canadians like this:

Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK

is it just the foot mapping? I can live with that. Actually it'd be quite useful.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on November 19, 2008, 10:15:14 AM
yep just the foot mapping because every other part of the body could be skinned asymmetrically, and too many of the costumes I like often have diff patterns on the legs that far down.

Great to see you coming back Vertex! You were always one of my favorites!

This might help me get out of my skinning funk...that...and possibly a VX_Thor... :P

I love the remapping of the feet. Guardian can finally be complete!

His helmet does need some fixing however. The nose shouldn't be visually defined.

Like so...

Looking down on the top of his head I believe his face mask would curve to a slight point.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on November 30, 2008, 09:23:25 AM
nice pointer I'll bear in mind, especially since that isn't actually a mesh of Guardian.. just a normal vx I put a skin Avalon gave me on. When I get around to actually making a Guardian mesh I'll have to think about this.... not whether to do it per se, but how to without needing to do a major remapping of the head. Guardian is a bit of a rare commodity in that his helmet is soooo tight to the head. I don't just wanna stick some pieces on the front of his face that would obviously not be part of the rest of the head... so it's a matter of what would be the best way to manage it.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on November 30, 2008, 11:45:06 AM
Just to point out that I "get" what C6 is trying to suggest for a mesh suggestion, here's an example taken from a similar situation.

Now in this example with Unicorn (an Iron Man villain) the faceplate is an armored piece that really doesn't matter if it stands out as being seperate from the rest of the head. It comes out from the head to cover the nose and then returns to the head providing a nice masked effect. Since it's an armored faceplate it actually helps that it stands out. With Guardian, we'd want that extra meshed area to truly blend with the rest of the head which means it becomes part of the body and it's mapping does as well. As you know my vxmale_wiremaps are rather full as they are....
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Podmark on November 30, 2008, 11:51:46 AM
Well my suggestion would be, if you were to use the separate piece, make it as flush as possible to the face and make it's mapping identical to the face itself. If done right when skinned the fact that it is a separate piece would barely be noticeable.

But a properly modeled face would be more effective.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on November 30, 2008, 11:56:26 AM
yeah... I've seen some of these items stuck onto meshes that are so ... barely noticeable.. sorry but nooooooooooooo which is my point.

And yes... a properly molded piece added to the body would would be better.. gee lol think I said that :P

Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on December 01, 2008, 10:43:59 PM
yeah...

I know I posted this big I will be back message and I started a mesh and went aaaaaaaaaaah my animations suck!

Sooo.... I decided before I put anything out there I needed an updated animation library. The only animations I had left after my big hard drive crash were OLD backups that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. A while before the crash I had updated everything to the point that you wouldn't have recognized my generic sets anymore for the most part and the stubborn mule in me just won't accept the backup garbage I'm left with.  IPS can't animate right now so he's been kindly critiquing what I'm animating as I go to catch me when what I make isn't up to par with what I want.  I'm not limiting myself like in the past with 1 basic pose that then branches off to different archetypes.  There's multiples of everything.. so in the end I'll have a VERY large variety of options for characters.. I could stand 5 guys with superman animations next to each other.. and they would all be very diff. You could have 3 speedsters race across the screen at the same time and notice.. they're all running differently as well. Needless to say this is taking a bit longer but once it's done.. I won't have to worry about animations for a while... I do so hate animating :P

Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: yell0w_lantern on December 03, 2008, 01:36:47 PM
I still use your flashallen269 mesh and myriad other "mitten" meshes. I know a lot of other folks here use the old style meshes too.

First of all, there are some great skins for the old meshes that are not available for newer ones.

Second, there's a ton of old style meshes and they have a good degree of keyframe compatibility among them.

Third, for the resolution of the game, most characters don't need more than a mitten hand

I still use your flashallen269 mesh

OMG you still use that dinosaur? There's a clinic, we can get you help man!!!

No honestly, what it boils down to is that it's taking a lot of time and effort to make these keys for my meshes (which I have to, since mine can't really use other people's keys) and I'm gonna have to do it for vxmale, vxfemale, vxheavy, vxhulking, vxfemale_short, etc.... variations. now on top of that I have to proceed out from that and set up keys for capes to work with all of these then set up new types of anims for particular mesh situations like weapons and a myriad of other things that come up with characters.
I honestly don't like to animate. This is taking away from time when I could be doing what I actually want to do, which is make meshes. The sooner I'm done getting this animation sludge work done the sooner I'll be happy as a clam that I don't have to deal with the nightmare anymore. You then approach me to go back and take all these animations I had to do, to make my stuff functional and go through it all again (admittedly with less effort because it will be adjustment work for the diff hands) but more time away from what I actually want to do.
Now, with all that said... where does that leave peeps who might actually want to use my anim sets on "standard" meshes? Honestly I don't think so highly of my animation that I believe you even need them. This does not mean however that a person such as yourself who presents such a question... shouldn't have an option. Now if you were me, and didn't wanna spend a bunch of time duplicating work you had to do, onto meshes you don't need to work on.. and somebody else who meshes expressed interest in that being done... what would you do? *hint hint*

P.S. Oh and on the reference to ingame resolution... let's face it dude most skins I see made... most meshes I make are NOT made for ingame. All this talk of smooth edges and creases and so on... ingame that amounts to almost nothing. That sort of detail work is made for the Ctool. If we only worried about what was good enough for ingame.. boy would the quality of skins and meshes be considerably lower. We make to look beautiful in Ctool and then playable ingame. At least I do and always have, it's a large part of why I have such high standards for quality and why so many skinners do as well.

Different face shapes and types.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on December 03, 2008, 05:31:31 PM
AA I remember you being so much more... articulate

I assume this is a request, (this is where I act all cheeky and tell ya this is mesh thread not request thread) but I actually hadn't thought of modeling different faces onto vxmale and muscular and so on. When I get to mesh making I'll have to consider that. Most wouldn't because changing the physical structure much requires remapping and possibly physique repair afterwards but that's never really scared me off. Not sure I would do that to all the variations though.

I thought I'd jump on the requesting things bandwagon.  :) But really it would be interesting to see different shapes of faces and even different noses for the vx but I completely understand how this could prove difficult.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Vertex on December 03, 2008, 07:08:41 PM
why do people make me think??? lol  :P

Even now me and someone else are discussing whether it's appropriate to convert the head to a modular concept.. where you would be able to swap heads casually at a whim.. thus modifying facial structure really wouldnt' be that big a deal to the mesh as a whole.....

drrr ignore the man behind the curtain... realized neck mapping was part of head mapping.. and didn't wanna seperate the neck at the torso but rather the base of the head at the neck... would be FAR less noticeable that way. Soooo think I might forget about this one.
Title: Re: I WILL BE BACK
Post by: Podmark on December 03, 2008, 08:23:56 PM
I would be very interested in alternate heads. Like a chubby Doc Ock kind of head, or a thin kind of Vulture head. It'd give some very interesting options when skinning.

If you did a VX Female with a slightly smaller chin, I've got this skin of a certain talented amature done on a VX mesh that I would love to release (but then I'd have to go and finish the top professional, and I haven't figured out how to do an umbrella yet). I also wouldn't mind if you added capes and skirts. A Vertex Versatile mesh?

Johnny patches has a couple of new Male Heavy meshes with different features. One of them has a bulldog jaw, they both have bigger noses.

... and you use old meshes because there is a lot of stuff out there for them. Also, some of them just fit certain characters. I did Captain Nice and Commander USA for Male Cape Clothes Baggy because no other mesh would have done them justice. I put George Reeves and Kirk Allyn Superman skins on Male Cape Nobelt, because VX Superman and Superman Ren just weren't appropriate.

Hey! I love that dinosaur!

Part of the reason is the fantastic skin set I have for it but another part is I think the proportions look more heroic. The later versions seem less defined and more tubular.

I can't stop the phrase "totally tubular" from replaying in my mind now.
