The golden Globes seem more and more like the oscars each year to me... irrelevant and pointless.
I think the whole notion of these awards shows has lost their appeal to me. They used to be like a sporting event for me... now they just come across as a big marketing plug for the Holiday "prestige" movies that are either in theaters or being released on Video.

For fun, just once I would like to see them abruptly change the rules mid year and exclude all movies released after Halloween from that year and watch the lists just dry up and the studios freak out.

BWPS

This list made me sick to my stomach. Where the hell is The Dark Knight (other than the obligatory Heath Ledger nom)? And no amount of nominations will ever have me believe that that Benjamin Button movie isn't the biggest piece of crap I will ever not see. How I met Your Mother is the best comedy on TV right now, and NPH definitely deserves to win. But of course they won't ever judge a comedy on how actually FUNNY it is, so just give it to The Office because Steve Carrell is just sooooo funny. THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!? HAHA I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT JOKE USED ON TV BEFORE! At least House is nominated for everything. And NPH is the best guy on HIMYM (though everyone contributes to the show's greatness) so I guess they weren't too bad at the TV section. But seriously, Tropic Thunder was barely even funny (Tom Cruise was the best part, though, definitely), and there have been some amazing comedies this year. And Benjamin Button... wtf? That looks like such total garbage, it's like a setup to a joke or something. It's like that "he should have quit while he was a head joke", only a long and terrible movie instead of a joke. I hate awards shows, let's hope the Oscars don't make the same stupid mistake and only nominate Ledger because he's dead. I don't want to see a repeat of 1997 in which Good Burger got ignored while Titanic won everything. It seems like the Oscars will always nominate Titanic, in whatever form its in. Inaccurate historical movie + romance = nomination every time. Do any of those types of movies ever NOT get nominated?

Martin Scorsese: Do you think Leonardo DiCaprio looks like Howard Hughes?
Other Guy: No sir, not even a tiny bit.
Martin Scorsese: Ah, frell it, no one knows who he is, let's make a 3 hour movie about him and get some Oscars
Other Guy: You know, you might actually win one if you made an interesting crime type of movie with an undercover cop.
Martin Scorsese: Hmmm... sounds like a good role for Leonardo DiCaprio. Maybe next time!

Dissin on Scorsese... come on.
Hes one of the few old school guys who isn't coasting entirely on Auto Pilot these days. And The Departed was fantastic....

And regardless of how Benjamin Button turns out, its a David Fincher movie. That guy will always get my opening weekend money even if the movie is a complete dud.

Mr. Hamrick

Generally speaking, I am happy with the list.

I wasn't expecting Dark Knight to get anything besides a nomination for Heath though it would've been cool to see Christopher Nolan get a nod for Best Director or the screenplay get nominated.

In Bruges (which got two nods in the best actor category and the best comedy nod) was released back in the Spring around the time of the Atlanta Film Festival.  I was pleasantly surprised to  see it get the nods it did.  It seemed like a very underrated film.

Anne Hathaway getting the nod for "Rachel Getting Married" doesn't completely surprise me.

The Wrestler getting three nods is cool.

Goggles, funny thing is that a decent amount of these movies were from the Sundance and Venice film festivals.  Cannes too, if I recall.  And more than I expected given talk that I'd heard about an increase in focus on "studio" films.  There is a definite backlash coming off the WGA strike and the possible (again) SAG strike against the smaller budget films and a desire to highlight some of the big budget studio material.

It's an odd thing to watch.

I'm not surprised, per se, that "Pushing Dasies" isn't nominated for anything, but I am annoyed by it.  That is one of the best shows on....as a matter of fact, it is the only thing my wife and I actually go out of our way to watch.

I think its a given that Heath Ledger is going to get an honorary nomination in most awards. I think the role was definitely nomination worthy (especially after watching it again on DVD) -- but I think the whole death thing really puts a weird dynamic on it in terms of actually winning. As for Nolan. I think hes a good technical filmmaker, and he has started to develop a look, but at the same time,  I don't feel like him being excluded there is that big of a deal. I think as a director (again my own personal preference) some of his other films were better examples of craft than this one.

What gets me about that one is that I really wouldn't consider it a comedy. There are parts of the film that skirt the line of being a dark comedy... but I don't know. What i do know is that I was excited about seeing it, and really disliked it a lot when I did. I dont think its underrated at all, it was a film that the pieces amounted to more than the whole (for me anyway).
