Title: Spud's Art: THE ALSO RETURN!
Post by: captainspud on January 30, 2012, 05:07:33 PM
Pfft, Meejub's not cooler than me! I can have an art thread too!

I haven't posted art in years, so I've got easily tens-- tens!-- of pictures saved up!

I hereby declare that as long as Meejub is posting something every Monday, so shall I, so that I ALSO MAY BE ONE OF THE COOL KIDS!

Week 1: Gobber Gun Mage

Of course, I don't actually draw superheroes much (or at all) anymore, so y'all will have to settle for the various doodles I've tossed together for the games I've been playing the past few years-- various D&D campaigns, and the fantasy/steampunk hybrid wargame I play. Also, some weeks I may not actually have finished pictures, so I may half-arse the thread premise by sharing sketches, sculpts or whatever else I can dredge up.

For my first MEEJUB SMELLS MONDAY, let's start with a picture I did toward the end of last year for the RPG I'm running in the aforementioned steampunk/fantasy setting; I'm drawing all of the party members, then eventually I'll be sculpting a mini for each one. This little dude is a Gobber Gun Mage-- he weaves destructive magic into bullets, because apparently getting shot with an inch of filthy lead isn't a grievous enough injury for a fantasy setting.

HA-CHA!

(http://www.captainspud.com/stuff/gobber_gunmage_800.jpg) (http://www.captainspud.com/blog/ik_gobbergunmage_1600.jpg)

Also, I happened to record myself drawing this one, so it's on the YouTubes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqU4pg0TCHU).

And stuff.

Jeez, with all these artists returning and the corresponding influx in artwork production, I might have to resort to giving monosyllabic feedback! ... Eventually.

Should we be worried that this is the start of some Potato vs. Popsicle war? Should we cower from the incoming onslaught of frozen fries and crushed ice? Either way, I'm loving it. Figure Fan is right, the weapon effects are excellent. In particular, I'm a fan of the way the energy wraps so seamlessly around the explosive shell, and the successful composition that has one hand casting (thoughtlessly, effortlessly) while the other fires. The detail on the gloves and the weapon is great to see, with the attention to textures and lighting adding to their tactility and conviction. You also manage to convey a lot of action and movement in what could have been a very generic "character" image, with the swinging key and the leaping position.

Nevertheless, I think putting the character in an environment would have helped to enhance that action – stopped him from floating in space and given him a bit more of a story (though for all I know you're planning to put all the characters of the RPG together in a group shot at the end). I also would have liked to see a bit more variation in the clothing/body: the shading works well, but the colours and textures come off a little 'samey' in places, causing much of the viewer's attention to be drawn away by the light show to the right. To me that's a big shame because there's a lot of expression and character in the body that I feel is being a tad overlooked. Then again, these are only small things, as the piece as a whole is very impressive and leaves me eager to see more.

Oh... and, uh... didn't you get the memo? I'm sorry, but we had a group vote while you were out and agreed you could never be a cool kid.
What can you do, ay?

That's very cool indeed.

I enjoy watching those kinds of videos. Makes me wonder how long it actually took you to finish the artwork. Plus the music rocks, were you actually listening to that as you worked? I think it would really motivate someone to work on any artwork.  :)

I love the pose of the little Goblin. Your video was interesting to watch. I may now be your sworn enemy but I can admit you did a good job. I do have one nit to pick with you... You... stole... my explanation mark! You took it! *sobs*

I dub myself the winner of the first ever Popsicle vs Potato Battle For Monday on the grounds that my Villains Reborn 2012 image rocked harder!

Feel free to object but as a "cool kid" I reserve the right to totally ignore you. Totally.

Love this piece Spud. I have always been a fan of your art (hence my obsessive need to share the XStream's Apartment pic that you made). Can't wait to see the competition continue.

A competition implies that both sides have a chance to win.

That is not the case here, because Meejub is going down no matter how hard he kicks and screams.

And now, it's time for another riveting episode of MEEJUB IS A CHUMP MONDAY!

This continues the series from last week, with another party member for the fantasy/steampunk RPG.

This one is also recorded and on the YouTubes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyT_z16Azdk), though only the drawing segment because I had a lot of problems with the colouring half of the video.

Aaaaaand... I'm more or less out of polished backlog art after two items (I really don't draw much), so everything I post from here out will have to be either new work, unfinished work, or stuff I didn't like. Should be fun. :P

There's a lot of detail and style in this image. More than anything I'm loving the old man (not to be mistaken with loving the old man). I like the boldness of the linework, the many, many accessories that sit so comfortably on his person, and little details like the forearm tattoo and the soft waistcoat. But most of all, I want his shoes. They're propper clodhoppers that really add to the feel of the character.

The robot is also good. I think the white and yellow finish is quite refreshing, and the battle damage on its wrist blade and the wear and tear on its carapace are exciting touches that provide a deal of backstory to the character. I would have to say the robot is perhaps the weaker of the two designs, but only because it comes across as less polished than the old man. The colouring and shading of the pipes and mechanisms is a wee bit bland and could use a little variation, and some of the linework seems a bit rough in places.

Nevertheless, as a whole the steampunk Geppetto/Pinocchio vibe works surprisingly well, and I would hate to get on their bad side.

Meejub Is A Carrier For Weasel AIDS Monday continues!

If you're already tired of fantasy/steampunk RPG characters, the relentless onslaught isn't going to let up any time soon. :P Here's one I drew just this week:

With the usual YouTubing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Qm5LXlpyhbg).

Less whimsical than the last two, this is the party's gruff Pseudo-Russian Cleric of Morrow (or as we call him, Battle Jesus: "Help people, and be nice to them... but if that doesn't work, club them with something blunt and heavy.") Doing the picture the way I did was a bit of a gamble, because he still technically had two hands on Thursday when I drew it. And while I was fairly sure the player would continue to antagonize the mob boss they're working with, there was always the chance he'd go the diplomatic route instead and avoid the retaliation he kinda had coming.

Thankfully, if there's one thing you can always count on RPG players to do, it's to be total dickwads to the NPCs. :P

Good job on the pic Spuddles. My only critique is that the front fold on his tunic just looks odd and out of place. Seems like there is something under there holding the robe up like that. o.O!

a perfectly clean and well done work on this character, only one thing but pheraps is just in my eyes, i see the hand too much inclined.
i like this steampunk line of characters, and could be even more interesting if there is other study of the same character in the same page, maybe with a little description.
this is just a suggest cause this is already a great work.

It's truly amazing to see that just from a simple sketch, you were able to transform it into this fully detailed character in one sitting...(nice background song too.)

In core D&D they aren't, but this setting (http://privateerpress.com/iron-kingdoms)'s far more permissive on the subject. Besides, even the traditional restriction never made sense-- it was supposedly so they wouldn't draw blood, but anyone who's watched Dexter or CSI (both truly bastions of scientific rigor) knows that blunt trauma isn't exactly bloodless.

I have nothing constructive to add that hasn't already been said by these two painterly types. Instead, I'll quickly voice the things I like and then leave it at that.

I love the texture you've given to his hair, and the weight and detail you've given to the hanging book. The bunching at the neck works nicely, especially with the contrast between the tighter undershirt and the baggy robe. I'm liking the war-ravaged soldier-cleric vibe, and the shoulders are very funky, notably because they appear to have a descent range of movement to them - they don't come across as completely impractical/immovable adornments. Personally, I'm not a massive fan of the three-quarter length arm (would have preferred a half or complete arm, as I keep expecting him to pull his hand out of his sleeve for some reason!) but that's entirely subjective, based solely on my aesthetic tastes. Moreover, it might have been nice to vary the colours of the shield a tad, to stop it from reading like some kind of back-armour/connected to the shoulders.

Out of all the characters so far, this guy resonates the greatest sense of having a personal history, and I find that compelling.

And now, for another thrilling installment of Meejub Wishes He Was A Baby Marmoset Monday!

I'm away from home this weekend and have relatively limited computer access, so I had to dig through what I could find on my server.  I ended up with a decent one-- it's from a couple years ago, and was the first picture I ever drew for the fantasy/steampunk game setting.

It's another goblin, but this one is a mechanic who works on giant steampunk robots. No video because he predates me knowing how to make those.

And stuff!

It's great to see some of your earlier work Captain Spud. Old or new, your drawings are really impressive to me. The only thing i noticed here is that the shading for the construct the Goblin is sitting on looks a bit unfinished or maybe rushed?

Ok, I don't comment very often in art threads, due to my lack of talent & training, but that is friggin' awesome!  Seriously, that looks like it should be interior artwork for a game book, or even a module cover.  Please tell me that you are actually getting paid for using these skills, if not for this particular genre of artwork.

Title: Re: Spud's Art: THE ALSO RETURN!
Post by: PreRaphaelite on February 20, 2012, 11:54:35 PM
Hey, cool pic! It's a great mood piece. The shadows and highlights on the Goblin enhance the dark, weary, grimy atmosphere while at the same time being excellently applied. There is also a great balance of solid dark areas and very thin, technical lines coming into play. My favourite parts of the image are without doubt the accessories and the pose; the goggles, the leather apron, the notched spanner wrench - each piece stands strong in their own right thanks to the different brushstrokes and tones used. His pose is perfect for the scene, I get the feeling he's taking a split-second breather to contemplate his next task before moving on. His creased/wrinkled maw is also very nicely textured.

I must agree with Outcast that the shading and modelling of the construct he's resting on is a tad sloppy compared to the focal character. I would even venture so far as to say the background as a whole comes across as a bit incongruous with the rest of the piece. I think I can see what you were aiming for; trying out a hazy out-of-focus background, maybe a heated furnace? Somehow it doesn't quite seem to work for me - I think because it reminds me a teeny bit of a photo that's been thrown through a bunch of filters. But that doesn't stop the picture from being a real pleasure to see. I think your use of shading and form is very impressive, and I hope to see you start some current drawings again soon. :)

Another week, another Meejub's Heart Is Two Sizes Too Small Monday...

I was super busy last week, so my artistic output was in sketches instead of full, polished drawings. These are all NPCs for the fantasy/steampunk RPG, and the common thread here is "citizens of steampunk Pseudorussia".

Greylords are FBI wizards.

This was the main antagonist for the party's last story arc.

My goal with this dude was to make someone the party would immediately want to murder. I was successful.

This is the guy who cut off the cleric's hand. He's so smooth that the party isn't even mad at him. :P

Random note: I'm not sure why, but for some reason I have way more trouble drawing eyes on the computer than I do with a pencil. I had a ton of trouble getting the shape and pupil direction to look even borderline passable, and even then they're still pretty terrible in this and most of the other pictures. I have some theories about what I'm doing wrong, but I won't be able to test them until I do another sketch day. In the meantime... FREAKY EYES EEEEEEEEEEEK!

It's quite common in fantasy art to see the past-their-prime knight done as a bearded man, but I'd never seen it done with a middle-aged woman before, so I took a stab at it. Also: yes, the armor's ridiculous. It's a canon design that you're supposed to pretend makes sense. :P

This one turned out terribly, which I took as my cue that I was done drawing for the night.

Each sketch took about 20 minutes. There's video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrYjCrQ3UNg&feature=player_embedded), but the licensing on the backing song doesn't let it play in the US, so consider this fair payback for every time a blog, forum post, or news aggregator has posted a stinky Hulu link that 95% of the world can't see, you inconsiderate dicks. :P
Title: Re: Spud's Art: THE ALSO RETURN!
Post by: naitvalis on February 27, 2012, 04:35:59 PM
ahh i can see "the magic" here! "the freshness" of this sketchs stimulate immediatly the fantasy of the observer.
this is a fact.
the observer can even immediatly knows what kind of personality the character have with a simple look, and this is another awesome fact.
now,
i was courious and i watched that video, if i can say a thing, in certain case (like for example on certain places of paladin armor ) you have used some "too rough" texture wich in my opinion was not needed.
however the first 3 (leyla, guard, greylord) not suffer from any loss of " the magic", the others, unfortunatlely, are good but not have the same power (at least for me) .

one last thing, i love this studies, first for your nice tecnique, and second cause they are "pseudorussia" related, but i have enjoyed them even more with  some "full figure" near the face (especially for the paladin).

Yikes, I completely forgot about Meejub Doesn't Think Latvians Have Souls Monday. But it's still technically Monday here for... three minutes. @_@

Not enough time to check my hard drive for old art! Instead, here's something that was already uploaded-- a model I sculpted last month.

Of your quick sketches, the first three are probably my favourite, most notably the Winter Guard Captain who has such a delightful sneer. I do so enjoy seeing sketches and character designs, so thanks for sharing. :)

In all, some good stuff here - and sorry for the late reply!  :(

So when you say that you sculpted that model...do you mean from scratch?

Jeez, now that is commitment. I'm beyond impressed - very cool sculpting photos.

As to the latest RPG design, I'm really digging both the simple costume and the awkward pose. You're very good at telling a story in a single scene, and I feel I'm given a great deal of information about the character without need of any detailed explanation. I think the inking is clean, bold and comes off well, and I think you have a real knack for giving weight, solidity and authenticity to objects, such as the axe and the shield. For me, the guy's face seems a little flat, and his hand is positioned a little uncomfortably under his chin/cheek, but overall it's a solid, clean image.

Just a quickie this fine Meejub Molests Wallabies Monday. There's a series of gimmicky miniatures that were done for charity-- the Legion of Justice and Caeke (http://www.reapermini.com/legionofjusticeandcaeke). Sadly I can't find the drawings for them anymore, but you can see tiny versions in that link. I love these designs, and wanted to add my own member to the Legion's storied ranks:

I drew that over a year ago, but never found time to sculpt it. However, one of my sculpting sites is running a contest this month, and the theme is "musicians", so I'm finally going to get off my arse and do it.

Aaaand... that's it. :)

Aww, she's so cute! I didn't know you could do cute.  Something about fingerless gloves and a hood on an anthropomorphised tapir just seems to work... Yeah, keep us updated with the sculpting, I'd like to see how you progress. :)

Taking a three-week break while my schedule beats me bloody with a spiked baseball bat. Nothing next week, back the week after.

Sorry. :(

This dude is a pseudo-Russian FBI Wizard. Or he would be, except he was forced to flee pseudo-Russia a month before he earned his comically oversized fur hat to escape pseudo-Russian trade gangsters.

I <3 this setting. :)

It's probably a good thing that Meejub summarily ended Meejub Doesn't Trigger Automatic Sliding Doors Monday, because I was starting to run out of horrible (but true) things to say about him.

Anyway.

Here's a picture!

YouTubery (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWRRjXoxJg0)

This is the sixth and final character art video for my steampunk/fantasy RPG party. This one depicts our group's thief/spy/general sneaky git; my concept was to try to imagine a Dickensian orphan all grown up. It's not the most exciting piece in the series, but then, he's supposed to be a completely unassuming and unremarkable character. (The video's title calls him a mouse because the character works for an information network that secretly passes information to a high official of the Church of Battle Jesus named Archon Dargule; this network is informally (and somewhat pejoratively) referred to as Dargule's Mice.)

Sweet video Captain Spud. It never ceases to amaze me, to see how people can turn a simple sketch into works of art. As always, i also enjoy the music you pick for these videos.

"Kick em when they're up, kick em when they're down...Kick em when they're up, kick em when they're down..." (Starts kicking a Murs46 clone lying on the floor...)

(Only to realize later...that the Murs47 clone was suddenly standing right behind.)

(Immediately slows down the pace of the kicking and slowly looks behind ....and makes a big grin... :stupor)

Is this Steampunk/Fantasy Hybrid RPG an actual full on game system you've been playing or something your gaming group cobbled together like a piecemeal Frankenstein RPG made from your favorite parts of various ones?

It's all in his imagination. We humor him because he's insane.

I thought it was because most of us are behind in our tetanus shots and Spuddly tends to get a bit flaily with those rusty meathooks when he's in a tiff.

It's called the Iron Kingdoms (http://privateerpress.com/iron-kingdoms). It was originally a 3rd party D&D 3.5 setting, which was so popular that part of it spun out into a massively popular miniatures game (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine) that I also play. They're releasing a complete reboot of the IK rules in September as a standalone system.

It's a really awesome setting. They've crafted a world that is a complete and utter political mess (A hates B hates C hated D hates E hates F, all of whom are fairly shady and jerkish in their own ways), which makes for awesome roleplaying. :D

Ah ok yeah it all seems more familiar now, I remember seeing this stuff at a comic shop around here and wondering what it was. Are the minis prepainted? And is Warmachine as complex as Warhammer? Please note I've never played warhammer but I've looked at the rule books and seen it played, once people started pulling out measuring tape and squabbling over 1/4 inches I was done. Still rather enamored with there look and fiction in warhammer and of course 40k as well though.

Nope, building and painting is part of the fun. :)

QuoteAnd is Warmachine as complex as Warhammer?
Much moreso, actually. In Warhammer, your army is 100+ guys, so each individual one has very few rules and options. In Warmachine, your army might only be 10 or 15 guys, but each one has much more complex rules and a wider range of options. I find this type of gameplay far more entertaining, and of course, it's far less soul-crushing to paint an army of a dozen individuals than 100+ rank and file. :)

Minis games aren't for everyone... I love 'em, but you need to thrive on detail and tedium to a certain extent. :D

As much as I knock Games Workshop's games in general (the Warhammer games) for being terrible rulesets, the fluff and universes of both games are really interesting and deep. Basically, all the stuff that's left over from the 80s and 90s is good (the art and story), and everything done in the last 15 years (the gameplay) sucks. :P

So we're essentially talking about squadron sized groups with as many powers and options per individual as say a heroclix piece then? Sounds interesting. The massive war game scale of Warhammer has never been my thing when it comes to tabletop stuff. I don't mind massive armies duking it out on a computer screen mind you, I love a good RTS game.
