Well, I started using the links at Dreamerzoid's site to look at stuff on the Wayback Machine, and one of the links led to Freedom Reborn Handbook. I've saved most of the pages, and started on the data pages. One of them was for a character called Outamyhead, and I was curious enough to click on the link to the skin... and it was there! Not only was I there, it was on a Wayback Machine saved NPI page with other links to other skins... and other NPI pages. I think I got them all (at least the ones that were still there), there were some 250 skins and/or meshes. I know I have some of them already (they were at NPI), and I haven't checked them all out, but I figure I have a couple that I didn't before.
All in all a very profitable waste of time.
I wouldn't call it a waste of time...more like, preserving fine art from being lost to the ravages of time. :D
The thing is, what do I do with them? I've found several, like RTTingle's avatar (two of them), that I don't think are anyplace else, and, since he isn't around these day, I can't really ask him if I can post it to a NPI Yahoo group. I'm still not sure what I've got.
Yeah i love looking back to those old ff sites with the way back machine. I even found some old tutorials, forums, the skindex, the freedom center...
I also stumbled upon Reepicheep's ff site. I think it had some meshes over there. But i thought the download links were gone though.

Well you can maybe post the links? So people could get a chance to download them too. I'd be very interested to see them as well. :)
Wow! Cool! :D I'm not sure what we can, should do with them, but I think we'll probably have to have a community discussion one of these days about what to do with the work of folks who have left the community. It seems a shame to let it just fade into obscurity.
Way cool! I tend to agree with the idea of making them available to everyone. Having collected a massive amount of creative works of a lot of very talented people over the years, I, too, would hate to see it fade into obscurity (no pun intended :P)
Quote from: BentonGrey on February 26, 2016, 03:10:03 PMIt seems a shame to let it just fade into obscurity.
Well, that explains how DaGlob found the links :P
The way I found it was by putting this link from Dreamerzoid's links page into The Wayback Machine:
http://mumas.com/FF/home.htm
...and looking for an earlier capture. I found one taken around 2004, and in the "O"s, there was a character called Outtamyhead. I clicked on the link (the image is gone) and was taken to a data page on the character. Just for fun, I clicked on the link to his skin, and was taken to an archived NPI page. This page looked totally different than any NPI page I had seen before. But a lot of the links work! So do a lot of the links on other pages you can reach from it.
I'm leaving the rest of it up to y'all.
I've found that by changing the capture dates there are some characters that are not on other captures. You have probably figure this out by now, but this is for those who came in late...
On one of the older pages I found a link to The FF Underground. Sadly, I haven't found anything that works yet. I'm particularly unhappy about the Death's Jester page...
I've spent the last week or so slowly going through what I have. I have looked at fantastic hex/scopes and beautiful skins. It deepens my respect for those who came before me.

No kidding...The magic that that the original Skinners did with Male_Basic/Male_Belt is just incredible. Not on my best day could that magic ever flow through me.

Definitely Revenant's work, that's for sure.

The Mesh in question is actually by BIL, even though it's located where it is.
Thanks. Maybe BIL still has a copy someplace.
Later:
Well, whaddaya know. He did have it.
I just can't seem to be able to get any keyframes to work on it.
Looking at it, it would make a nice space suit.
I wonderer where the original skins is...
I was able to grab the "Mike B7" Skin by Paradox for that Mesh, but I still don't have the Mesh :P , but I'm sure with some Skope-Fu, we could get some Keys to work on it.
I don't think it was very good. Can I see the Mike B7 skin? I think I used taskmaster keyframes with it. I can look and see if I have any kf.
Ohh man, this just occured to me, but if someone wants to do modders a really big favor, they could take screenshots of picture indexes of maps from the old FXForce and FRP2 sites, if they could find them. If I get some time soon I'll do it myself, but I CONSTANTLY lament the loss of those sites, as much for the loss of a visual record of maps as for the sites themselves!
I'm working on it. :)
I haven't found the links page yet, and his mesh isn't there, but a pic is...

I do indeed recognize some of those, particularly the Iron Man skins. Or at least a version of them from Tommyboy's site. And yes, I do believe it was Ren's work. Fantastic. I would kill for alot of these, particularly the Cap, Supergirl and Scarlet Witch ones. man had amazing talent.

FF Underground? Unfluffybunny? FF Center? NPI? Are you guys intentionally trying to stalk all my old skin sites?!? O_o
Yeah, and so far we've only resurrected two skins... :(

Bearded has been working with the Wayback Machine.
http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php?topic=58448.0
I used a link at the bottom of the page for the Freedom Force Web Ring, and found several things that had a link or two that worked.
Here's one:
https://web.archive.org/web/20081005055834/http://www.mrbrdo.net/HeroTool/
If you plug this into the Wayback Machine the site has some working links. I don't think it's anything new, but...
http://www.freedommods.com/ff-spm.html
Then there is this site and the other capture shown on the site:
http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/freedom_forcer@sbcglobal.net
I don't know if it's broken or if I just don't know how to use this site.
Plug this into the Wayback Machine:
http://comicskins.com/skindex/ff/canadian/canadian.htm
The only link that works is "download and run this program". It installs a Canadian Freedom Force for your use, so I suggest hat you have it install someplace where you can look through the stuff.
Also, if you look though this site, you will see pics of an Unreal Tournament version of Wonder Woman by Dark Jared, and Superboy with a Shield by Afghan Ant.
...and so may broken links and lost skins...
For those of you who are interested in Sims, some of those links work.
The situation with the Sims prompted me to try every link. There are something like 100 links that work, many for skins that are being hosted at Alex's place. I haven't gone through them yet, but I want to see what the Unreal Tournament Wonder Woman looks like.
The link for the
NPI conversion pack still works if you type/search this address
Quotehttp://newpowerinc.com/NPI_Conversion_Pack.zip
using the Wayback machine site. Just select the date Jan 28, 2007.
But i'm not really sure how to use it, if it does work at all.
The Mod tools for :ffvstr: also seem to have this nifconverter application. Which doesn't seem to work though.
I find it strange that Irrational would provide a defective converter in their Mod tools.
Fortunately, Lightning Man made a Nif converter that works.

http://cquintas.tripod.com/daemon.html
At this site, something is still there, but the .tga files want to download as html.
http://geocities.com/mandateprime/mandate_previews.htm
Plug this into the Wayback Machine and you will go to a preview page of Mandate's skins. I have a few other skins, but have never before found a site for him. Now it seems that he had some stuff at the Skindex...

On the Twisted Earth site there is this pic, and a .zip file attached. Unfortunately, the zip is only 166 bytes, and pretty well useless.

And I bet the one you got was the 1st version...has the jacket on it, right?
It has a long coat; looks like it was based on Gambit.
Yep, that's the first version which was a hex (skoping wasn't big yet) of Ink's Gambit mesh and I used C6's base as a start back then (was just starting to tinker with ideas at the time and had been bouncing between C6's and Valandar's base skins trying to find one that felt better than Gryphon's...the answer ended up being none as my latter stuff shows.)
You know, you could save us all a lot of trouble if you would just put all this older stuff in a Yahoo group or something...
Is the newer version the one in your present Yahoo group?
I don't think my yahoo groups even exist anymore. When yahoo started asking for a phone # I shut down my yahoo account, so I'd be amazed if the group is around. FRP was the last place that hosted my stuff and I've never gone looking for another host seeing as I'm semi-retired as a skinner.

You know, I don't think I put this site up...I'm not sure though. From what I can read (I AM NOT JOINING YAHOO to look at the files), it looks like it's most of my FFUnderground skins which means it doesn't have Wild Card v2 in it but the first version as well. Hell, I barely even remember making skins of the Shield or Flash....jeez....been so many skins over the years I've forgotten more than I can remember.

Great find, Cyber!
The Meshworks link goes to a Azrael Keyframe comparability list, the Hero Files link downloads a file called Hero Conversions that is full of Hero Files, the links to the DC and Marvel conversion pages are gone, Hero List is a page that explains which meshes you should use for which character, the links are outdated, as are his suggestions for where to find the meshes.
It may be obsolete, but it could still be of some use.

Sure! Go right ahead. :)
Altered the title somewhat. It's kind of misleading, since it's what's old that we are looking at.
Just for yuks, I tried all the keyframes at the NPI archive, and most of them are still there. If you don't have them, and think you might ever use them. I suggest you download all you can. For best results, it seems that opening the link in a new tab keeps you from shifting back and forth between windows, but you will be left with a lot of tabs. Whatever is the easiest way for you.
Just as a rule of thumb: in the skins and meshes, if it has a picture, it has a skin most of the time. None of Valandar's mecha seem to be there, and while many of the maps and FX are there, a lot are not.
Also: nothing from Ewzzy is there.
Just messing around, but the pages after the first page of The Skindex are gone. There were no meshes in the first place.
Has this been posted yet?

I have seen that. I couldn't find any skins in the site. I'm still on the fence about listing empty sites. Maybe a separate post in the Living List?
Yeah, unfortunately, I've only found 1 Skin so far. It looks like everything else may be held in various Yahoo Groups.
I've mentioned before that it seems as though a lot of stuff in the old sites is disappearing, and NPI seems to be losing a lot. If you want anything from them, or think you might use something, I suggest you go to the archive and download everything you can. Remember, sometimes you can access older or newer captures from the scale at the top of the page, and get slightly different versions of some of the skins and meshes.
This is a link to an archive of a capture from November 2005:

Bumping this up a bit.
When I first got the game, when it just came out, I downloaded a bunch of skins from the skindex and not much else if I remember.
When I got back into the game in 2010, I went on a downloading spree and hit every website and yahoo group I could find, grabbing what ever looked good.
Now, I'm trying to get everything organized and I'll put some lists up with just about everything I have.
Besides a 32 gig SD card I filled, I also have 5 old DVD's full of FF stuff. And there's still some stuff on the active web sites I haven't got yet.
I just bought a 256 gig SD card since the price has come way down. I'm filling with installs of both games with all the addons, mods, herofiles, the editors, and a few games used for source material - the Movies, Empire Earth 2 and 3, Civ 4 and 5, etc.
But with this amount of space, I'm going to get everything organized - unzip skins into their mesh folders, add kf's to the skopes that need them and making lists of each character, skinner and mesh.
I would post the meshes/ skins all in place like Mega, but some of them belong to people here that are still active and I don't want to upload anything without permission.
Once the lists are up, you can search by character, mesher/skinner, etc and I'll share as much as I can, time/work permitting.
I've gotten a lot from the friendly members here over the years, and payback is always nice.

That'd be great, RD!
:D
1) I've put 4 of my 5 dvd's on the SD card so far. One of them only had 1 directory of skins, but they are all dated 7/2002 and there's over 250 of them. I have a feeling that these are mainly from the skindex
2) Checking one out, it turns out that its from Gryphon's site. Checking it out with wayback, I was able to download a good zip file.
The wayback address is; http://web.archive.org/web/20070118093203/http://www.chynaman.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FF/FF.html (http://web.archive.org/web/20070118093203/http://www.chynaman.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FF/FF.html)
Also, I was able to download the meshes from https://web.archive.org/web/20090408045743/http://frp.unlimited2.net/ (https://web.archive.org/web/20090408045743/http://frp.unlimited2.net/)
3) At present, the total size of meshes and skins, not including mods, is 25 gigs with 1 disk to go. Number of duplicate files unknown
4) Going thru the files, I've gone thru and processed about 30 skins and skopes from AlyCat and I've got about 40 + from Bloodshadow I'm doing now - these seem to be mainly skins.

omg this is amazing !!!!

Still going thru the files - just the male basic ones are adding up.... about 150 skins so far. A lot of my time is being spent trying to find out who did what due to no readme.txt or creator name on the zip/rar
I think this is a good find - Ren's Toy Box - most of Ren's meshes are not working, but I've gotten a lot of the C6 skins to download
Edit on that; It looks like the mesh is included with the skin, so you're getting 2 for 1. It looks like about 50% of the links are working.
Double Edit - I guess I forgot that these are hosted on Alex's site. Not sure about the maps. etc.

I've been concentrating on my original old files from 2002. I've been able to grab a few more files from the skindex site. Its also been very useful that even if the skin is dead, it helps identify some skins do I have with no readme.
Some of the links there have led to other links. Most are dead, but some are surprisingly complete.
XMan's site - not many skins, but all links are good https://web.archive.org/web/20020423222354/http://cs-people.bu.edu/colstad/freedomforce/ (https://web.archive.org/web/20020423222354/http://cs-people.bu.edu/colstad/freedomforce/)
Emerald Dawn - focuses on Green Lantern, but also, all links are good https://web.archive.org/web/20020818202805/http://www.emeralddawn.com/items/skins/skins.htm (https://web.archive.org/web/20020818202805/http://www.emeralddawn.com/items/skins/skins.htm)
Sorry if I'm posting duplicates, but I think these are all new finds.
This site is still active and all links appear to be good; http://spectralknightsffskingdom.freedomforceforever.com/ (http://spectralknightsffskingdom.freedomforceforever.com/)
(Almost) no more broken links!
The following should show you just what's still good on a wayback site;
1) go to wayback and put in your old site - in this case www.gammapatrol.com
2)Pick a capture to go to, say one in 2005
3) Once you're there, go to the top of the page and add "/*" to the end of the address
4) you'll see there are 1,259 pages archived for the site.
5) on the right side of the screen is a small box for searching, "filter results". Type"zip" and you'll only see the zips for the site.
6) there are 149 zips you can try to grab. Any from the right time frame should be good - any from after the site went down will still be bad.
I've used this with the Skindex and Gamma Patrol and got good results. Electric Freedom, Heroes for Hire and Champions look like they have almost 0 links left.
RD
So, using the method described above, I went to the base "newpowerinc.com" address on wayback. There was a total of over 6000 entries saved, and over a thousand zips!
Going by date, all but the last 10 still appear to be good. Some of these are probably available other places, but I saw zips for the following;
AlyCat, Bloodshadow, Housequake, Matrix, Tekkaman, Titan, Valandar, Vertex, Paradox and Zuludelta.
RD
Nice find!
