Title: Sentinels of the Multiverse--Game 12
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on September 07, 2017, 01:09:22 AM
It's time for another round of play by post Sentinels of the Multiverse.  It does not matter if you know anything about the game, it is simple to play and easy to learn.  I will explain as needed.

For more information, the rulebooks are here (https://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/downloads), you can find a wiki full of information here (https://sentinelswiki.com/index.php?title=Main_Page) there's a breakdown of all the cards and what they do (which I use to generate the text for this game) here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F-4drbJyXUWxFg_EzzBsrprzPciAtRdZZLyUStl3abI/edit#gid=10) and a podcast going into all the stories behind the game here (http://theletterspage.libsyn.com/).

I had hesitated to do this previously, but there's a huge fan expansion for the game called The Cauldron which I own (it has an official license now and can be sold legally) and I would be open to making those heroes, villains, and environments open for play if people were interested.

With that in mind I will post the official heroes.  You may pick any of these to play, first come, first served.  After you pick a main hero, pick a variant in the spoilers.  If you are new or are not sure, just go with the default version.

In that case I'll be Guise.

Haha, jk. I know DJ would literally eat me if I did that.

I'll take the Southwest Sentinels.

Edit: I'm running low on heroes I haven't yet played, and those remaining don't really appeal to me. I'd like to see the heroes available in the expansion.

Actually, the Southwest Sentinels are glass cannons, so they'll be putting out tons of damage too, when they aren't more worried about surviving.

I'm still going to hope for a fourth player and will join in as before if we don't get one.

A reminder to you lurkers--this is really an easy game to player.  Please just jump on in.

Good news--file uploading has been restored.  I'll have the Cauldron heroes ready to go for next game.  Hopefully the environments and villains too.

And the final official expansion, Oblivaeon should hit by the end of the year, so 10 more heroes, 4 more environments, and a new game mode/villain coming there.

Yeah, I should update that bio.  He's really more of a supervillain revolutionary than a Nazi, although his father worked with them.  Since the Letter's page podcast has gone into details about these characters, I've gone back and edited some of the hero information, but haven't gotten around to the villains yet.

If we do do the good Baron, since we have done him before, we will do the Mad Bomber variant.

Setback and Naturalist are both fun.  Both can tank too, which would complement the current team rather well.

Unless you are already familiar with the game (and you very well might be) I would advise not picking any of the Cauldron stuff.  It's pretty complicated compared to the official game content and, of course, isn't official game content.

But if you really have your heart set on it, I'll allow it anyway.

It's no more complicated than, say, Nightmist, but I was going to wait on the Cauldron stuff until next game, due to some technical issues making uploading the rest impossible.

Anyhow, please give your thoughts as to which enemy to fight.  Warfang, Omintron, and Baron Blade have all been suggested.

OK. I'll go with Baron Blade Mad Bomber variant.

And that's a majority folks.  Mad Bomber Baron Blade it is.

I will point you toward the relevant Letters Page episode in case you wish to learn what is happening here and why.

http://theletterspage.libsyn.com/episode-3-baron-blade

So now we must choose an environment.  What is your choice?

The ruins of the lost city of Atlantis, home to amazing relics and the terrifying Kraken.

The home city of Legacy and the Freedom Five.  A shining vast metropolis.

Wagner Mars Base, a research and military base located on Mars, it is the first stop for would-be conquerors from the stars.

A land lost in time, where dinosaurs and other ancient creatures still live.

Often known by it's nickname of Crook city, it is full of crime and curruption and is the home of Wraith and Darkwatch.

More than just strictly legal production and research goes on here.  Beware of dangerious chemicals and mutated vermin.

A strange magical dimension where the laws of physics are constantly in flux

The tomb of Anubis, Egyptian death god, full of traps trails and the occassional reward.

Time has gone completely bannannas here.  Creatures and places form throughout time and space are all mixed together, and that can't be good for the space-time continuum.

FILTER's interdimensional prison, where the worst of the worst are held.  The prison is ungoing a riot and the heroes are unfortunately not any more popular with the guards than they are with the prisoners.

A time Portal has connected the present with Chronoranger's home down, right in the middle of a gunfight with a family of bandits.

In the far future that Chrono-Ranger ended up in, strange cryptids have multiplied and destroyed all human life.  Only Chronoranger, lost through a time portal, and the eternal warrior Haka are still alive.

The headquarters of the Freedom Five and target of villains looking to get ahead.  It was, in fact, designed with that in mind.

Baron Blade's giant craft have been loaned out to villains of many kinds, along with their Blade Batalion crews.

(http://www.sotm.freedomforceforever.com/banners/dok thorath.png)
The homeworld of General Voss, Dok’Thorath has been thrown into chaos following his death.  The rebels want his freedom.  The military wants control.  The now leaderless gene-bound creatures want only to feed on both sides.

Far out in space lies the Enclave of the Endless, a refuge where the last members of dead species can live out away from the ravages of time and the grasp of death.  The mistress of this place cares nothing for good or evil.  Wonders can be found here, but horrors too.

The fourth incarnation of Omnitron is a barely sentient automated robot factory, trying to piece itself together.  The dangers are extreme, but the promises of Omnitron-based technology are enough to lure many villains here, and draw many heroes to fight them.

Attempting to create the perfect justice system, an alien race created the Celestial Trubunal, a judicial AI in a massive ship able to make perfect, rational decisions about who is guilty and who is innocent.  I judged the entire race guilty and destroyed them.  It has traveled through space ever since, stopping at inhabited planets, finding them guilty and destroying them.  Now it has arrived on earth.

Deep under the earth lies the relm of magmaria, a land of heat and fire.  And it is not uninhabited.

A misterious carnival, that shows up suddenly and disappears just as quickly.  There are always people left missing in it's wake.

That one can get weird as we learned once when ChronoRanger sort of became Earth's lawyer.

Still, I'm pretty cool with that one or maybe Mobile Defense Platform (keeping with a theme)

Alright, I'll be putting the game together for a few days.  I do have room for one more player if anyone wants to jump in at the last second.  As we now have 4, I will be stepping back out and will be hosting only.

Also, you all will want to flip Blade Quickly, or the Sentinels will not be having happy fun times.

Notes: Sky-Scraper can only use the power for her current size.  Any size changes take effect immediately and there is no limit to how often she size changes.

The Sentinels are only considered Incapped as a group when all of them are down.  Individual members can be brought back.

Alright, let's start dealing out damage by switching to huge and using Colossal left hook on Blade, then follow with the Clap power (heh...there's a dirty joke in there somewhere), draw a card, and end my turn.

One question: Link cards? What's up with them?

Okay...so I will put the debulator on Blade, not use a power this turn, and draw a card to end my turn.

Why not use Concussive Clap in that power move? I don't think it will do us any harm.

Because I'm stuck in tiny mode if I use the debulator on Blade until I find a card that grants me another size.....

Not sure what you are talking about here.  You are Huge.  Debilitator does not change your size.  After playing it, you are still huge and can still use Concussive Clap.  Nothing you have done so far would make you Tiny.

To use Debilitator I would have to change to the tiny size because that's the only size those cards work at...or at least that was how I thought it worked...if it doesn't, then sure Debilitator (I almost wrote something really dirty there), clap, then draw one.

There is nothing on that card that says you have to be Tiny.  You may always use all cards regardless of size.  Some cards change you size when you play them.  Those cards always say so.  Links are size neutral, giving you something to play if you don't want to change your size.

No.  It has to actually have the word Ongoing on the card for it to count.  Targets are usually their own separate thing.  Any card that destroys Environment cards will work, though.

GG, you might want to use Between the Lines on someone else cause I'm at normal size right now. No damaging power available at that size.

I believe Glitch Girl discarded Between the Lines so she can use Critical Multiplier to boost one Hero's attack.

I think we really need to flip Mad Bomber Blade as soon as possible. If we don't, he might have another chance to hit and weaken the Propulsion Systems.

Playing Buffer Overflow might be a bad idea. Since i see it as a way to add more cards under Baron Blade card. Thereby increasing his attacks.

Whereas Targeting arrow would allow everyone's attacks to increase.

Sky-Scraper's Rebounding Debilitator is a very good card to defend against Baron Blade's attacks.

Anyways, i'll just help attack Blade when it's my turn.

Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse--Game 12
Post by: Reepicheep on October 03, 2017, 04:55:59 PM
I'd agree about using Targetting Arrow. I'll feel a lot safer once Blade has flipped. Combined with the boost from discarding, I'll do 7 damage on my turn. That'll be half of him gone. Again.
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse--Game 12
Post by: Murdock on October 03, 2017, 05:06:49 PM
I may have been wrong about Buffer Overflow. Since you get to choose when to discard a villain card. I'm assuming if it's a villain target and Parse decides to discard it, it ends up in the Villain trash and not under Blade's card. It will be a gamble that the next villain card played will be something different/better.

That is correct.  It only goes under him when it is played.  It can still go into his trash directly.

Also, how is that card being discarded again?  I am not aware of any card effects allowing that.  Discarding cards isn't something you can normally do at will.

No, you cannot.  Lots of enemy cards make you discard and Parse has several cards that also let your do so, but you can't just choose to do it.  You will have to hang unto that card for later.

Alright, I'll use Left Hook on Blade and discard the Aggression Modulator via the Hook's secondary text to play Thorathian Monolith, follow that with a clap and draw a card to end it all.

EDIT: We'll probably flip Blade this turn, so I'll hold off on the discard and play of Monolith. So my move should look like this:

Left hook, clap, draw one, end turn.

I can deal with single target attacks, and if the Idealist goes down I have the means to bring him back.

It's the damage to everyone that worries me. It's, like, 12 damage a round for me.

Carry on, this is fine. It's all good. Nobody's panicking. Are you panicking? I'm not panicking.

Is there any way we can destroy the Propulsion Level without removing its HP? Its pretty frighteningly close to ending the game.

I'll discard Human Shield.

There is a way to get rid of the unit without destroying it but we don't have the cards yet...

I don't believe he has any way of dealing damage to it. His cards all specify Hero targets.  Now that he's stopped bombing things, you're probably okay.

Also, I have family in town for a couple of days, so update may get more infrequent, although they won't stop.

My apologies for the delays.  My graphics card descided that it would be a good time to die and it took my Windows install with it.  Three times.  Then decided to keep crashing the system, but was kind enough to actually give me an error message so I could figure out what was happening.  I now have a shiny new graphics card, but I am still setting up the computer, including some programs I need to access the files I use for this game.  The game should resume in a few more days.

The Sentinels fly back into action, folding away their picnic blanket and making sure that no plastic packaging is littering the South Downs.

I'll play Good Hero, Bad Hero. Idealist gets the heal. Blade gets the punch in the face. I'll then use telekinetic jab on the Brute. Hippocratic Oath's heal will target Medico, Mainstay and Idealist.

If so, I'd like to follow that up with a pinpoint shot on the Brute, taking him out.

If not, we'll rethink this course of action.

I think you mean Between the Lines, since that's the card that lets someone else use a power.

No problem. I'd be more than happy to help take him out for you. I think it's a good course of action as we also get to hit Baron Blade.

Oathbringer  (https://brandonsanderson.com/books/the-stormlight-archive/oathbringer/)came out.  I have finished it and can now return to the outside world.  Was the sun always that bright?  Coulda sworn it was a big smaller.  Or maybe it was the night sun I'm thinking about.  Can't remember what it's called.  Something with an M.

I suppose I'll use a Telekinetic wallop to wallop blade and, obviously, nobody else. Idealist will use it.

Then Idealist will use Telekinetic Jab on Blade.

Dr Medico's Oath will heal the three non-sentinels.

The other two are still quietly stuffing their faces from the picnic hamper.

Also, do you wish to draw any links from your discard pile to your hand?  I can get you a list of your discard pile if you need it.

I’ll use unique capabilities to get durasteel chains. I’ll use fling into Darkness on blade, with Mainstay doing the damage. Then I’ll use Telekinetic jab on him.

Hippocratic oath will heal the non-sentinels.

I think that should be enough for Bunker to get the last hit in.

As the game is about to end, I will probably be waiting until New Years for the next one, unless the public demands we go ahead and start.  I'll probably finish writing up the Cauldron stuff in the meantime.  By the time the next game is over, the final expansion should be out, so we'll have 6 Villains turned Hero to play with and new powered up version of the Sentinels.

The coup de grace?

I place Auxiliary Power Source, Ammo Drop, and External Combustion beneath Omni-Cannon. Play Turret Mode. Then use Omni-Cannon to deliver the final blow to Blade.

Woop woop!

Take all the time you need, Cat. I'm looking forward to the next round and trying out some of the Cauldron content.

Yay!

I guess until we gather again, Happy Holidays to all, whatever you celebrate!

(also, can anyone give me tips on how to get past Citizen Dawn on the Steam version of the game?  She's been kicking my but regularly, though I can get through the rest of the villains)

I never did answer this, it seems.   Citizen Dawn is the hardest of the starting four. (but not the hardest period)  There are two basic strategies to beating her.  1.  Flip her as quickly as possible, then immediately flip her back.  She only flips once per game, so take out all her minions at that point and beat her down.

2.  Don't flip her at all and beat her down as quickly as possible.

This is one case where Hero selection can make a big difference.  Deck control like Wraith or Visionary is a huge help as you can keep Devastating Arrora or some her more annoying minions from coming out.  Heroes that are not as setup dependant like Legacy or Tachyon are able mostly shrug off DA.  Deck control is essential if you are playing anyone setup heavy, like Bunker or Wraith.  Wraith, fortunately, bring her own deck control.

If you are going for option 1, try to leave any minion you can deal with alive, so you can flip her back quickly.  Remember, Dawn is herself a Citizen, so it is entirely possible to flip her back immediately.  Spring is a common one to leave around as the small amount of healing she doesn't isn't that big a deal.  Return with the Dawn can actually be useful once you've flipped her to flip her back quickly, but beware of expecially painful citizens Like Summer coming back.

For option 2, you need either Haka or Visionary.  Visionary can use Brain Burn to get citizens out of the trash and back into the deck before she flips.  Haka can put destroyed citizens under his Savage Mana card so they never enter her discard.  Either method can prevent her from ever flipping without having to leave citizens around to cause more damage.

No matter what you do, however, she's still a challenge, although not as bad as The Chairman in Rook City and Iron Legacy in Shattered Timelines.
