I don't know if you guys like this sort of stuff, but:

D Fighter, a 2-D fighting game with 36 DC Characters if you count the secret ones, including popular picks such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, lesser known entities such as Captain Atom, Plastic Man, and Guy Gardner, and the downright obscure such as Felix Faust and Cir-El. Here's an easy way to access the secret characters: When you download the game, go into the 'Characters' folder, and then open 'clist.cfg'. Change the number at the top to '36'. Then add the following:

Characters\superrs.id
Characters\batrr.id
Characters\cirel.id
Characters\prime.id

Characters\para.id
Characters\rv2.id

I would hesitate before including mugen.  Most version are hacks of an incomplete product with a dubious non-open source (as far as I can tell) license which make most version and things made with it quite illegal.

D Fighter isn't MUGEN. The other one is though. Just in case, the link is removed.

If you are a fan of the turn based tabletop like wargames, I just rediscovered this formerly commercial game from years gone back. Only now its been re-released as free.

The War Engine: http://www.matrixgames.com/products/356/details/The.War.Engine

It has a really detailed and complete editor for basically constructing just about any kind of war game you can imagine. The graphics are primitive and tile based, but I had this game years ago and wasted hours on it.

You can download an Aliens created module from here: http://www.datafilehost.com/download-ea1b1db7.html

i'm big on trying to find browser based games these days.
here is the old board game dungeonquest:

http://superluminal.byethost9.com/dungeonquestV314/index.html

it is rules light, but you can click and figure it out if you've played the original i think.
and here is an online settlers of catan:
http://www.playcatan.com/
you can play it without registering for free.

Here's something interesting I found. It's a fighting game, (NOT MUGEN) and, well just check it out for yourself. ;) It's called 'DUEL TOYS 2'. Wait until the updated version gets released later today to download it though.

There was a separate thread about this, but there's a whole lotta content that is free:

Dwarf fortress - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_fortress

Take a group of 7 dwarfs into a randomly created world, load up with supplies pick from the shop before you leave. Pick a mountain to make your home and start tunneling. Different biomes in the outside world, more dwarves arriving to help, spent ton of hours playing this. The game went from a 2d world to a 3d one which I didn't like, so I still play the old version. Basic graphics but great game

Haven't tried this one, but there was a link to it on the Dwarf Fortress wiki - it looks like it would be great to try

Any of the many types of Rogue games, especially Vulture's Eye with the enhanced graphics.

Outcast

Totally funny yet cool game. I like it. The drawing/art, hero concepts and music score ain't bad either. I also like how they roll and have unique powers you have to use in some order to get the job done. Reminds me of Lost Vikings. Thanks for sharing Bearded.

catwhowalksbyhimself

For some reason I never mentioned ToME 4 here.  A very sophisticated roguelike rpg with dozens of different class, races, skills, and enemies, thousands of potential items and elite enemies, actual graphics (and very nice graphics at that)  and a modern mouse and menu driven interface that is intuitive and easy to play.
