2 Player Multiplayer?

I was wondering if you guys have figured out a way to do 2 player multiplayer through the campaign. Me and a friend want to play through if it is possible.

From searching on this forum, I have heard about something called Hamachi, but from the sound of it it seems like that is a server...? I'm not really sure. My friend has had a bad experience with Hamachi and says it's very hard to get rid of, so if possible I'd like to avoid that.

Anyway, Freedom Force seems like it'd be a great co-op game, I'm surprised the game developers didn't implement the functionality for that.

Without a physical LAN, i think Hamachi is the only othe option. Especiall since GameSpy (i think that was the service) closed down.
