Howdy guys, a good friend of mine is looking into getting a few of the games I have so that we can play together online.  Since most of my old friends are scattered to the four corners of the earth these days, I'm pretty excited about the prospect.  He was asking me if there were good RPGs that we could play, and I thought about Neverwinter Nights.  I wasn't terribly crazy about the second one, but the first one has sooooo much 3rd party content available for it, that it would be more than worth the money it would cost him.  I just wanted to ask the people around the forums who are more familiar with the multiplayer aspect of the game how good the gameplay is.  Can you play through the premium campaigns cooperatively?

my memory is a bit rusty with NWN 1, but from what I recall, yes, you can play through the campaing co-op. The expansions, on the other hand, were a pain in the arse to play co-op though, especially Hordes of the Underdark. They might have patched the game since I last played it (it would be ridiculous if they didn't), but Hordes wasn't programed to play the campaign co-op since it wasn't "popular enough" or whatever. There were some cheap work arounds, but often times a scripted event would occur for the player hosting the game, while the second player would get stuck with a black screen while the dialog still continued. Or the second player would be stuck at some point in the story and it wouldn't continue because the first player already did it. Crap like that made Hordes kind of crappy, even though its campaign was the best one when played solo. The original campaign didn't have these issues, since it was designed at release to be played with your friends if you want.

did they ever patch Hordes to make the campaign playable for more than one person?

I heard Titan Quest was a good game too. You might want to check it out, but I haven't played it myself.

Thanks TM!  I bet my friend would like Titan's quest, but I like my RPG's with a bit more weight. (I imagine we're going to have issues with him wanting to skip all the story parts  ^_^)  That's a shame about the expansion campaigns, 'cause they were by FAR the best things about that game.  Still, with the community as big and active as it is, I bet that they've manged to fix it.  I'll have to look into it.  Thanks again for the answer man!

Sigh.  It so happens this game was also on sale for four bucks last week on Impulse.  You are just the master of bad timing when it comes to computer games, aren't you?

Anyhow, you ought to consider modules made for multiplayer for NWN1 and 2.  There are a LOT of them, and many are supposed to be just as well done as the main campaign, plus they are free.

In addition, the final NWN1 patch added horseriding, paladin mount summoning, and the Purple Dragon Knight riding specialist class to the game, and several multiplayer mods have been updated to use these new features.

Ha, no kidding Cat.  Yeah, I've been drooling over the Wyvren module.  I need to get it one of these days.  Thanks for the suggestions Cat, I'll definitely try some of those multiplayer ones out.

Wow, I just discovered that there is a Firefly setting pack for NWN...if that isn't the coolest thing ever, I don't know what is.  The only problem is that it is dungeon master only.  That's a real shame.  I wish I had known about this when people were still running those adventures!
