I am a new student at a local community college, enrolled in a IT program. I learned today, that as a IT student, I have access to discounted/free software. Windows 7 is a program I can download for free. Right now, I have Xp Home Edition 32 bit. Should I upgrade to 7? How much better really is it than Xp?

If you can get it for free and are confident you can install it without boogering up your comp, I'd say go for it.  I can't really speak much about performance or under the hood stuff, but it is easier to use, menus aren't hidden and most of that pop-up security garbage is gone.

And the science gets done, and you make a neat gun

How did the upgrade go?  Win7 is good stuff.  I like it more than XP now...after reading more manual.  Although, most of the IT stuff you run into in the field may still be XP it pays to know both platforms.
