is the freedom force community slowly dying?

its a question i have to ask because i see skins and meshes sites and yahoo groups for  :ff: and  :ffvstr: are either disappearing or being taken over by unrelated adult content

i know this community is trying to keep the most creative game series alive but its slowly a losing battle as meshes, skins, mod, and fxs are being lost

i think lots of these things need to be re-hosted to be preserved on surviving freedom force file sites.

*shrug* The Freedom Force community has been "slowly dying" for about a decade now. And yet we're still creating new content at a rate far superior to most active communities out there, all for a set of games that have been around since before I hit puberty. People keep talking about how we're dying, but frankly the only way I see that ever happening is if something else comes out that offers us the same level of freedom and creativity.

Welcome to the Community Agentfidok9.

Admittedly, while the number of currently active Content Creators isn't as large as it used to be, there are still quite a few of us who are trying to remain active and are releasing new material as we can. In regards to Websites/Yahoo Groups disappearing, unfortunately, that has always been an issue. Content Creators sometimes leave the Community and move on to other things, and when they do, justifiably, why pay to maintain a Website that you are not going to update?

If you check out "Alex's Freedom Fortress", you'll notice that he has been adding Content from retired Creators. In addition, there are multiple Game Mods currently in progress, but as with anything else, real life has priority, so some things have been put on hold. You will also find that quite a bit of Content from older Websites has been collected and placed in various Yahoo Groups, as many of us want to preserve the hard work that had been put into those creations. While there are issues with Yahoo Groups, you will find that the members of this Community are still trying to keep it going.

I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again. While many of us do not have the monetary resources or technical know how to create or maintain Websites, we are doing the best we can. While there is a lot of Content that is currently not hosted anywhere, if there is something that you are specifically looking for, post a request in the "Requests" section of the Forums. We do have a great Community, and people are always willing to help others find what they are looking for.

The Freedom Force Community is IMMORTAL, we will never die!!!

Welcome to the community, Agentfidok9.

Yahoo groups have been having major issues for years now but it's been the commonly used file sharing site among our long standing membership even with the heavy spamming and so-so reliability of their servers. That's slowly changing as we are finding shared servers of our own or moving to alternative data storage.

I've been skoping for a few years and been making voice packs when I can and don't plan on going anywhere. As long as Freedom Reborn gives us to rally point for us to share our work, we will always keep the game running strong as long as we can.

agentfidok9, can you list the sites and yahoo groups that you can't find? We can probably help you out with any content you are looking for AND collect the stuff that was lost and store it somewhere else.

Welcome aboard, agentfidok9. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of active sites that still exist (for the valid reasons that Cyber Burn pointed out). To be honest, though, of the untold hundreds of Yahoo Groups with Freedom Force content there are very few that aren't still accessible, but as also mentioned, just post a request. I'm sure someone will have a mesh/skin that isn't available online anymore. Unfortunately, we can't do much about the stupid porn and spam links that are constantly being posted on groups that have allowed non-moderated posting. I can't stand that stuff either.

Also, I have found over the last week or so that when clicking on a link for a Yahoo Group, that I either get a "This page can't be displayed" (Explorer) or "ERROR - Description: Could not process this "GET" request" (Firefox) error. It looks like Yahoo has changed the address format for their groups.

It used to be this (using my group as an example):
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/hoss20/

Now it is this:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/hoss20/info

The main difference is that the word "games" is no longer present in the address. The neo, info, or even the "s" after https or groups isn't necessary, as you will be redirected to the current address, but it is having "games" to start the address that is causing the problem. Just an FYI if this is some of the problem you were having if clicking on links.

SickAlice

I dunno. I see a few of the old masters here now and a few more returned recently. Then I see new members. That alone seems like growth or at least a lack of stagnation. Subjectively too for a game engine that hasn't seen an update in so long these peeps have been at it a long time. And I mean I was here close to the start and that lined up with the days of things like Jared's Skindex, rom manipulation, the big Quake/Unreal push and MUGEN really becoming a thing as far as the game modding scene went.  I think Tomato has a solid point in that since nothing better has come along there's nowhere else for anyone to move onto anyways. Now people do come and go but that's just the demands of life happening so if anything I could definitely say the Freedom Force community is  " aging " as opposed to certainly saying it's " dying ".  And if it does pop someday at least it was a fun ride.

Welcome to the boards, Agent!

The fantastic thing about this forum, and part of what keeps bringing back, is that this is one of the friendliest and helpful communities on the internet.

If you ask for something, odds are.. someone will make sure to help you out. ( Here are a lot of Texas Jack meshes, including Pulp Versatile: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/TexasJackMeshes/files )

Also, I don't think this community is dying at all.

John Jr.

First of all, welcome aboard!
I think LP nailed it just right. The community is very friendly, if you ask for a skin or mesh someone will tell you where to find it (or send it to you). And if you want to learn how to create content someone will be glad to teach you. I leaned a lot about modding, skoping and skinning form the various tutorials and received tons of helpful tips from the "veterans". It's a small community, but a very nice, strong community.

murs47

Pretty much what LP and JJ said. I currently create a plethora of content for another game. But I keep it for my own use because that community is filled with entitled and ungrateful jerks. They demand content like the creators are hired help, and rip apart any work deemed unworthy in their opinion.

Here, at the very least, you're praised for contributing. At the most, others name their children after you. Previsionary/Premonitioner for example, named his eldest daughter Mursanica.

Mursanica?! :o

I forgot to say this community is the zaniest around too...

Jimaras8

As one of the newest members i have nothing but praise about the community. I have member of various MMO over the years and i have to say to you that people have a tendency to ask and never to give. This little town right here is exactly the oppsite. Whatever steps i have made have been because guys in these forums took some minutes off and gave me a clue. I don't think the community is dying. It has weakened over the years but i think that the past couple of years is stable. As long as it keeps the family vibe around everything is going to be ok.

Cyber Burn

Looking at the amount of responses that have been given, I think it's safe to say that this Community is here for the long haul.

Is the FF community dying?  Not while I have anything to say about it!  I know a lot of us feel that way, and I intend to keep creating content for as long as I can get FF to run on my computers! :D

That's the spirit Benton. Freedom Force is like Wolverine. It can bleed but will heal right back up (ok, bad example Wolvie is about to bite the dust soon but you ge the point  :D). Did you get my last message about some potential ideas for your campaigns Benton, i am not sure it is send. It is the one with the double boss fight finale.

BentonGrey

Ha, right!

Yes, I believe I did, Jim.  I'm afraid I got it just as I was packing up a piece of my life to move up to Fayetteville for the middle of the week and start my PhD program.  Needless to say, life has been a bit chaotic as I have been adjusting.

Wolverine is gonna die? Jeeze, Superman, Batman, The Human Torch, everybody's dying these days.

There are still a lot of us who check in from time to time, even if we don't post regularly. ;)

While I agree we will never Die I truly believe we need to do something's different.
For instance I have stopped playing the game because no Offense I HATE RPG FORMAT.
But that's just me.
However I love the idea that it can be so versatile where you can change the look Maps Skins Mesh and even Story.
I still Mesh and Skin not as often as I used to.
BUT WE NEVER OR HARDLY EVER change the game play so in reality its the same repetitive stuff over and over again.
I cant I wish I could I'm limited I wouldn't even begin to know how to change it.I have said it for yearsI like Thrid person perspecte I hate RPG I don't like having to stop and pick and choos its pull sme out the game and the action.I know some people have inquired first person perspective.
Maybe even a VS Mode..I don't know but surely somebody or someone has to know what can be done or what to do.

Me personally I like old school Play like "Batmans Arkham" change camera angles play as a third person and if I have to pick anything pick my weapon...

Even Meshes and Skins while I think some of them look great and fantastic many are just repetitive of the same thing...

Great stuff just the same great stuff..

I don't know I don't mean to offend anyone but I make Meshes and stuff and cant enjoy them as I would like to for myself...

I know right Bearded has taken this very task to which I speak but I know its not easy who else can help?

Im don't to the point where id be willing if we took up FUNDS to hire a GAMER PROGRAMMER to make it happen...

We Growth I don't feel we have Growth Freedom Force should be Evolving into something different the first two game were the Starting point be we can take it further...
because they aren't making anymore to my knowledge and persanlly I could be wrong but I feel that's where the second game fell because it was great but gave us more of the same great....Same gamplay Same everything...

Sorry if I sound critical but that's how I feel...

SOMBODY PLEASE TALK TO ME!!!

I know what you mean, hmarrs.

While I'm not tired of the game itself, there are many things that I wish you could do in this game, a 3rd person perspective being one of them.

It's my goal to create some sort of spiritual successor to this game when I become more adept at Game Programming.  I really do want to see this game evolve and become something more.  Freedom Force will always have a special place in my heart, but it is beginning to show its age.

I do love all of the content for this game, though.  It's always so exciting to see new art for this game! :D
