...and if it is that cold here in the Sunny South, the rest of the country must be brutal.

Y'all be careful out there...

spydermann93

Can't. Already froze. I am the dead. R.I.P in peace. :lastmohican

It's gonna be 55F here in So. Cal!  The horror!  I might need freakin long freakin sleeves!  Then it's gonna rain too?!?!?!  Who's ever heard of rain in January?!?!?!

They are saying 75 and rain here Wednesday.

Right now it's almost 11:00 and it's still below freezing.

Once again my desktop has refused to start. So I'm limited to my laptop and Kindle until I can get it fixed. And, of course, all the stuff I was working on is on the dead computer.

I'm so happy I could plotz.

BentonGrey

Man, DG, that's awful!  I'm sorry my friend!  Any idea what the deal is?  Here's hoping you can get it sorted out relatively painlessly!

I'm pretty sure it's the switch that has been put back together two or three times.

Ohh no!  Is there any chance of recovering the data, DG?  That's terrible news.  I'm sorry, my friend.

You could try pulling out the hard drive and connect it to your laptop.

Unless your hard drive broke, but if that were the case, your computer would turn on, but nothing would load.

I stand to lose 200G of comic books, a bunch of Champions stuff, a lot of stuff I intended to use for reference, all the pics of my granddaughter, and most of the custom filters, actions, patterns, and brushes I built in Photoshop. However, FF is on the other drive, most of the comics are out there on the net, and the pics of my granddaughter that my daughter doesn't have copies of do not number many. The Photoshop stuff and an assortment of programs (Nifscope, Blender, Terragen, Google Earth, etc.) will just take time to replace.

I'm assuming that the drive will either not spin up or the head has crashed and/or there are a large amount of bad/unreadable sectors.  If it just won't boot, it should be able to be hooked up to a working system as a slave drive, to pull off as much as is possible/practical.

If the drive won't spin up, I've heard an extreme tale that it could be caused by old lubricant in the bearings starting to seize up, and that warming the drive up (which loosens/softens the lubricant enough so that it will move) before attempting to start it can work for a limited period, primarily just to transfer files off of it.  Like I said, it's an extreme step, but for a drive that's otherwise a lost cause, there's not much to lose at that point.

My computer guy is pretty good; he didn't offer any hope, but I've known him for over 30 years, and he used to be my boss. If there is a way to get the data off, he will figure it out. He just doesn't want me to be disappointed if it is ruined.

The drive won't do anything; it just sits there.

daglob

I got the computer back, but it won't read the drive with Freedom Force on it. No reason why yet, so tomorrow it goes back in the shop. :(

BentonGrey

Man, that stinks even more.  I'm sorry DG.  Here's hoping that they can get that sorted out!

I keep thinking that I'll stop posting in this thread, to some extent it is a little self-centered, but this is a real problem. As I've said, the cancer got in my bones, especially on the left side. It also seemed to concentrate in the joints that had a little arthritis in them, and now I have a lot of arthritis in them. Since the end of January, my left hip joint has been hurting. Constantly. All day long. All night long. And it is getting worse.

I am not sleeping well, so I'm tired all the time, and I have ruined several skins and scopes by making stupid mistakes (fortunately, I habitually back up stuff, so I didn't lose everything). I didn't do as much for the Mardi Gras Challenge as I intended, and didn't make a St. Patrick's Day nor an April Fool's Day Challenge, and haven't done anything for the Anniversary Challenge. I had intended to pull more stuff out of my Yahoo Groups and send to Alex, along with a DC Super-Skrull pack and maybe a couple of Marvel Lanterns (and now I've seen this picture by John Byrne of the FF in X-Men costumes I really like...), and I still have a bunch of obscure Gold and Silver-Age characters started...

I can barely put any weight on my leg, and limping along makes by back hurt. I still have all this Real Life ™ stuff to do (taking out the garbage and changing the cat litter today is going to be hell), and it wears me out. Looking back, I'm not sure chemo was this bad. I'm on pain meds, but if I take the good stuff, it knocks me out for a couple of hours, then for an hour after I wake up, I have no pain. I can't do that. I have an appointment with an osteopath, but the earliest I could get it is in two weeks.

I don't expect anyone to do anything, just want to complain some. I'd cuss if it would do any good.

I know it's been said before, but whether your Skinning or not, we're just glad you're here. And if you need to get that profanity out while you're venting, feel free to shoot me an E-Mail or a PM, I figure with as much of my venting as you've listened to, you're more than welcome to vent in my direction.

Yeah man. Let 'er fly. As to the Arthritis, I have it in my back, (part of what my surgery was trying to fix), but prior to this - the pain management Dr. gave me a pill called Mobic. It's an anti-inflammatory, and if you can take it, it'll help with the arthritis. It's the only med that worked for the past couple of years. If not that, then maybe they can find something along those lines. Thoughts and prayers my friend.

Mobic isn't working. Or maybe it is; now that's a scary thought...

Sorry about your plight Daglob; and yours too of course, Wyldfyre. FWIW, did you try acupuncture? I remember that it did help my grandmother. Apart from that, cussing is actually supposed to relieve pain a bit, so...

Man DG, I'm so sorry to hear about all of this.  I know that has to be tough to bear.  The others have said what I think quite well, and I'll just add my voice.  If you need anything, I'm here for you.  I hope that the specialist can find some ways to help you.  In the meantime, you'er always in my prayers, my friend.

At least, not completely.

I had to change my muscle relaxer (for leg cramps and back spasms) back in January because the insurance no longer paid for it, and my regular physician was not in. The doctor on call prescribed me another one, and his choice seems to have been the problem. I quit taking the stuff Wednesday or so, and I feel better. My hip still hurts, but the stuff was known to aggravate arthritis and asthma, so I wonder why the hell I was prescribed it. I guess I need to run out of meds and get sick only when my doctor is in town. The stuff also had other side effects, such as flu-like symptoms, sleeplessness, muscle cramps (what? That's like tranquilizers causing hyperactivity-it don't make sense), and GI tract distress (you know what I mean). It can also causes liver failure (and this drug is supposed to help people?), and some of the effects, like worsening arthritis, can be permanent. So I still have an appointment with an arthritis specialist Tuesday. I'll let him look at my back, too; that'll scare the bleep out of him.

But, anyway. I'm better. Now we just need to figure out why people's computers keep going on the fritz.
