Title: Slipping back into FF/FFVTR
Post by: Reepicheep on February 18, 2007, 10:17:27 AM
Well, I figured I might like to see what I've been missing over the last few months. Could have been a year for all I know, but I'll be installing the game again very soon!

So, just to fill me in, what has been achieved over the last few years that I should be aware of? Mods, meshes, little scripting things. The lot.

And how do i kill shadow?

Huh...the line with Alchemiss telling you how to beat her didn't show?
Well, in any case, destroy all the pillars in her lair to lighten the mood.  Ugh, nevermind the pun.
Uh, I'm pretty sure Reep was joking... The "How do you kill Shadow?" question has been a long-standing joke around here. In the early days, it was the single question most asked by new board members...

No, i was just stuck.

:P

I read that I should challenge her to scrabble and hide all the 'Q's, which didn't help.
You're supposed to hide the 'Z's, not the 'Q's.
I remember the first time I played the game and Shadow was prattling about being invincible as long as she stood in the shadows.

I thought, "Aha!  I just need to snuff all those candles scattered around.  Then there won't be any shadows."

I am sure glad someone else analyzed that clue the same way I did!

The odd thing about that level, at least when I played it the first couple times, was that there wasn't much chance of the pillars getting destroyed by accident. The only character I initially took in who was doing area damage was The Ant, and his acid bombs have no effect on objects. I wonder if IG arranged things that way deliberately? Only Man-Bot's poor aim and Minute Man's area melee attack are likely to help you out.
Try fourth. I just kept kicking her butt 'til Alchemiss finally said "The pillars look a little weak. I think we can bring this entire lair down around her ears with a little elbow grease."

It's funny- when I first played the game, I put together the "her weakness is light" thing immediately, but I thought that meant that the key to defeating her was El Diablo's fire powers. I did work out the actual way before Alchemiss' hint, though- probably not long before, however.
I had already cheated in Gambit from the X-men and missed with the '52 pick-up' power I gave him which easily knocked out a pillar...   If not for that, who knows if I might have been among the many who popped in here with that question...

Can anyone tell me where I can get hold of the character tool/FFedit and the update nowadays?

Are the mods tools still up at FFans?

If they aren't, someone send them to me, for both games, along with the patch, and I will make them available on my site.

Fortunately, the mod tools for both games are still up at http://www.freedomfans.com/modforce/. The links to the FF 1.3 patch download (IG never hosted that at its own site) are still at http://www.freedomfans.com/ffpc/downloads.php. Even the links to the demos for both games are still up.

Haha, I analyzed that clue the same way, Stumpy, must have wasted near on an hour trying to snuff all of those candles.........

Ditto. Yeesh, I remember being pretty frustrated with Shadow & Co slowly wearing down my guys as I scrambled around trying to snuff the candles and then nothing happens when they're all out. Nowadays, after all that, I would probably just cheat and look at the mission script, but back then I didn't know any Python...

Right you are - found the things I needed. The official site wasn't working for me earlier, but I think that might have been my side of the internet.

Incidently, my internet is also causing me to be unable to download any of those. Its been incredibally off-and-on recently, and any downloads I'm trying to do stop altogether when my internet shuts down. I've been trying to download EZ-FX, the update, the editor and FFX, but I can't do any. Without those, the game experience just won't be the same. :(

Any ideas on why my internet might be so slow? I can't tell you the details because I have no idea what they are.

Have you run spy-ware and virus checking software lately?

Nothing grind your connection speed to a halt like a few thousand instances of malware and a 12pack of trojans...

yeah... I know....
