Title: Just Drawings Now
Post by: UnkoMan on August 01, 2007, 01:39:59 PM
Okay, here's another art thread. It's got nothing to do with avatars. Well, except, hey look there's a picture of my avatar. Whatever, I just like doodling.

Yeah, there's a lot of mistakes. Heck, I even added more to make the thing feel more frantic. It's a bit big, though.
There's an even bigger version HERE (http://sjhftac.comicgenesis.com/pictures/UnkovsCrux-1024x768.png), if you want a wallpaper.

And, here's a picture of the female by herself, that I used to test a colouring style.

If you are wondering just who she is... Her name is Crux. She's an ex-girlfriend of Unko Man's. She partnered with him for a while, hense the similar costume, but eventually they broke up and she turned to crime. Nothing too bad, just enough to be really annoying. She has a vast array of mental powers, most notably the ability to confuse people, none of which work on Unko Man, due to his unique mind. However, his gumballs are extremely susceptible to mental control. And yeah, she's semi based on an ex-girlfriend of mine, but it's all in good fun. I swear.

EDIT: Hey... any ideas for meshes or mesh pieces I could use for the lovely lady? I just might have to skin this one.

Looks awesome. Though I didn't know gumballs could bite. :D  You should bite back

I recognize the rendering technique from that link you gave a couple months back. Awesome stuff!

That is indeed what that is from. I've got to look for that link, actually...

Ah, here we go. http://www.jonnycrossbones.com/ljcbtut/02.htm VERY good stuff. The comic is swell, too.

And I did a super aged version:

Wow. Haven't even tried to update this thread in forever. Most of the things I do end up in the challenges anyhow.

But... I've been thinking of a new character lately. I really fell in love with this fellow.

EDIT: Picture down... Down...

Title: Re: Help With Logo?

I've been thinking for a bit that I've just gotta change the skull buckle on The Corpse's belt. Either something that could lend itself to a logo, or something that would look more skull like. I'm not sure. Just not what it is now.

I drew up a bunch of ideas. Also included are two new character sketches for older characters of mine. Don't worry about them though. They just are around to look cool.

Here's one with less of a "Dr. Zoidberg" look:

Well... it adds one more choice and caused me to draw up a couple new skulls. I don't think I will go with something that has a letter on it, though, and probably won't have a nose hole either.

I will keep drawin'.

Well, I have a whole sheet of skulls i made on paint, but i can't figure out how to post them. Yes, I'm a newb. I would love to show them.  Could someone please give me the readers digest version of how to post an image?
Title: Re: Help With Logo? & Character Sketches

upload them to an image server (something like http://www.photobucket.com would be ideal) then get the web adress, and post it in image brackets, ie:

:)

[edit]
gah! how rude of me!!
really nice work in here, comparing your sketches to the 2 offerings, i'm inclined to say it seems more in place to go for the "open eye" look without the angry eyebrows, and avoid the sharper lines, the roundness seems to fit IMO :)

Well, I've tried some other styles but... I keep coming back to this.

What do you folks think? I like the one with individual teeth better. I know it's drastically different from the type of skull I originally used and the designs MJB and Zulu came up with, but... I don't know. I'm drawn to it.

PS: Here's a little doodle I did in Photoshop.

Thanks once again, MJB. I like the little lightning bolt. Reminds me of Madman.

But, ultimately, I went with my own version. Of course that was bound to happen. I also toned down the hair a bit and changed up the boots, since I'd always felt the cuffs were a little clownish. I briefly tried furry cuffs, then just decided why not remove them all together, making tiny boots instead?

Now the only question is, better with smoke or without?

I say without. The smoke looks a bit too much like a bad Photoshop FX. No insult intended of course. ;)

Title: Re: Just Drawings Now

"Some" smoke is good, because the pic's too empty without it. But like Meejub said, THAT smoke looks canned and doesn't fit the rest of the pic.
Title: Re: Just Drawings Now
Post by: zuludelta on June 18, 2008, 01:09:36 PM
The rendering on the smoke doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the image. Maybe a more organic, "drawn" smoke would work better?
Title: Re: Just Drawings Now
Post by: UnkoMan on June 18, 2008, 06:02:47 PM
Hmm... alright. I agree that it doesn't really match, since I just use photographs of smoke and mess with them.

I am starting to play more with photoshop brushes. I wonder if I could get any good smoke out of that? I will have to experiment further.

I had some webcomics going for a while, but was never really series about them. Really, it boils down to me just being too easily distracted.

On the other hand, I did whip up a couple tributes to favourite super heroes of mine.

I'll probably be doing more, later.

PS: I did an Unko Man picture, too. I might use the same picture in a different setting though. I don't know.

Title: Re: Just Drawings Now

Heck yes. I use it all the time for character conceptions. Quick and easy.

Hey, I don't know where I should put this, but... I am trying to come up with another villain for The Corpse. I'll give you a bit of background, which I posted with this request elsewhere.

"He was, in fact, a highly celebrated artist. Begining in traditional mediums, he had been becoming more and more conceptual. At the same time, he lamented the fact that art's death was actually rather before his time. What was art now? In a world where newspapers were tabloids, what could it be? Art was plastic surgery. Art was public image. The celebrity blog was the new poetry. The height of cinematography was having a sex tape released on the internet.

In lieu of this, he started performing different works of art. The grotesque murder of celebrities. He was, of course, quickly caught and stopped. Placed in a mental facility, locked in isolation, he decided the ultimate form of expression would be cosmetic surgery done to one's self. This, obviously, simply resulted in a disfiguring. Thus, he now wears a mask. Boom, instant super villain.

Considering the fact that the Corpse works in theatre, with the occasional movie work on the side, I figure this sort of villain is a good type. What's that? Theatre not celebretory (make sure you're pronoucing this correct... or incorrect, as the case may be) enough? Well he does happen to be dating a rather popular singer. Granted, it's more local fame than anything too big, but still.

ANYHOW, yeah. I need a design. For him. Something stylish. Modern. With a solid, unique colour scheme. I love colours, as you may notice in some of those other designs. I picture him in some kind of suit. With optional things that I can add or remove, IE an overcoat or whatever, but with the same general feel all around. And, of course, the mask. The mask!

He'd also need some hench people in slightly less exaggerated versions of whatever his suit is. They wouldn't have the same mask either. Actually, I simply wanted to put a sack mask on their heads, as seen in The Strangers (http://media.metronews.ca/images/d7/c3/858e64e34f8398c2fb9b9e8b6348.jpeg) or Nightbreed (http://msp95.photobucket.com/albums/l157/pogokiller/Nightbreed/drdecker.jpg) or a million other things. I do so like that look. Perhaps he would have some fashion models too or something.

If people have ideas to say to me, or especially costume designs, I would LOVE to see them."

So, yeah. Love to see what you folks can come up with. Ultimately I will only be using these for inspirations, as with the skull on Corpse.
Title: Re: Just Drawings Now
Post by: Core on August 11, 2008, 12:57:28 AM
well if he is an artist then i doubt he would be content with just one look, so perhaps multiple masks of varying styles. a mask with a cherubic face from a renaissance painting (would be pretty creepy i think), an abstract "face", or a mask with an apple on it combined with a bowler hat. you could throw in a carnivale mask just to livin' things up.

I like the mask idea - not a specific mask, but a ever changing series of masks inspired by famous works of art.  Particularly the grim and macabre ones.  In keeping with the play on classic horror figures, how about something like "Dorian Grave?"

That is the perfect name.

Do you mind if I totally use it because it rules?

Anyhow, what I was thinking was something like this:
Maybe the middle stitch opens a bit, and you can see his teeth sometimes.

But maybe he could wear different masks over top of that one. I mean, he definately will wear different outfits and such. This is just his base design.

I really like your drawing style, Unko.
Dorian Graves is a great name.  Maybe instead of having an aging portrait stuck in another room, Dorian Grave's mask become more sinister as he commits crimes.  It could magically reset after some jail time.  :)
Title: Re: Just Drawings Now
Post by: UnkoMan on August 16, 2008, 11:01:13 AM
Oh man... that's a perfect idea.

I was going to have him start to dress more and more extravagantly the longer he is on a crime spree, and having him also become more and more grotesque is an awesome idea.

Dorian Grave. I love it. I love this guy. Thanks for your help, folks.
Title: Re: Just Drawings Now
Post by: Uncle Yuan on August 16, 2008, 03:33:21 PM
I had suggested "Grave" without the 's' - sounds closer to the original, but you are totally free to use the name (either way).  Xeno's idea is great!
Title: Re: Just Drawings Now
Post by: UnkoMan on August 16, 2008, 07:13:37 PM
Whoops. That was a typo on my part.

I also think I will add to his backstory that he was obsessed with painting more and more disfigured portraits of himself in the lead up to his complete breakdown. Perhaps his first real big crime will be during the gala unveiling of The Portraits of Dorian Grave. This show would, of course, be attended by the Corpse in his secret identity of Conrad Veidt.

It's true. MSPaint IS awesome. So is drawing with a mouse. Tablets are for suckers.

This, however, I drew with a pen. Then used photoshop. I am not satisfied with it, though. I think I will make a whole new background, then I can reposition the characters.
