Title: Looking for good DC team titles
Post by: Dweomer Knight on February 21, 2008, 12:53:16 PM
I'm looking to start reading some comics again and I've always preferred Team based books to solo characters.  What do you think are the best team-based titles (DC only; I'm already set on Marvel) right now and how hard would it be to get caught up on whatever current story is going on?  Thanks a bunch.

I don't know if you would consider this a team book. But, I'm really enjoying the new Green Arrow/Black Canary series.

Of course there's Justice League. Meltzer's 12 issue run was a blast. I'm also enjoying Mcduffie's run so far as well.

Green Lantern Corps is a fun one. Although the last issue was......meh. Other then that, it's a great team book.

As for understanding what's currently going on in the DCU, I pretty much don't and I read a title from it weekly.

The best DC team book is Justice Society.  Sure, the team has a bajillion members now, and they keep adding more, but it's one good book.  It wouldn't be that hard to get caught up, as it only re-launched about a year ago - issue 12 just came out a couple of weeks ago.

I thought Justice League and Justice Society were the only good DC team books.  heck, they're pretty much the only DC team books aside from teen titans, shadowpact and the outsiders.

Yes, but the relaunched series is a continuation of the old one, which started in the late 90's.  If you want to get a better understanding of some of the characters, you should get some of the old TPB's.

Justice League definitely! `Batman and the Outsiders` is cool as well.

Justice League Unlimited:  It's continuing the Timmverse, lacks many of the negative aspects of modern comics, and has a great cast with plenty of interesting characters.  On the down side, since there is no set team, the quality varies pretty widely.  Their stories are almost always really interesting in concept, but sometimes the actual execution is a little breezy and weak.  It's not quite as high quality as Batman Adventures, but it is still entertaining.

Justice Society, Checkmate, Shadowpact

The best DC team book of all time was Suicide Squad, which I've heard may be getting an ongoing.

It's still going on right now.

Thanks for the info.  I'm definitely going with JLA.  I was able to buy Isuue 0 through the current one without having to shell out extra $ for any "variant" covers.  Some early references confused me so I went and bought the bound compilation of Infinite Crisis which cleared up a lot of questions.  I wanted to do the same for Year One but it's spread over four volumes coming out to about $100 total; maybe later.

I'm glad to see Black Lightning making an appearance.  When I was younger and bought titles more or less at random I picked up Black Lightning #1.  He had no gadgets or powers and the dialogue is (by today's perceptions) hysterical and for no other reason than that, I have a soft spot for him.

I neither like nor dislike Batman; is the Outsiders a good title?  What's it like thematically?

I know nothing about Suicide Squad.

JSA is the curent Earth-2 group, right?  Is it thematically similiar to JLA?

I've read through JLA #6 and I've liked it so far though my knowledge of some of the characters is pretty skimpy.  It doesn't help when they constantly refer to each other by their "real" names instead of their heroic personaes.  Who's the red archer?  Is it the former Titan Speedy or someone else?

Yeah, Red Arrow is the former Speedy, Roy Harper. Justice League is a great book, and one of my favorites right now. The only weakness, in my opinion, is Red Tornado. This incarnation of him is a tad bit too whiney for my taste.
