How is your friend making you a copy if his CD is lost? The files and directory structure installed on the hard drive for the game is not the exactly same as those on the CD. Just copying those installed files to a CD will not result in a playable game CD.
The FFvT3R CD itself, like many CDs, is designed not to be easy to copy. Ordinary methods are likely to produce CRC errors, though those can also occur from ordinary file corruption during the copy process.
Keep in mind that discussion of methods of duplicating copyrighted software is not appropriate for this board, as per the forum rules (http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=41384.0).
Either way, given how inexpensive the game is nowadays, your best option may likely be just to buy another copy. Not long ago, I bought a couple extras from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006ZB0ZS) for $5 each.
I have bought the game and I love it, just on the first level.
