Special effects and makeup guru Stan Winston passed away on Sunday, June 15th in Los Angeles, California. Winston was best known for his work for the "Terminator," "Jurassic Park" and "Predator" series, and Edward Scissorhands. The 4-time Oscar winner most recently worked on Iron Man and was special effects supervisor on the upcoming Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

Was about to post about this.

Yahoo Article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080616/ap_en_mo/obit_stan_winston)

He had a great and inovative eye for creature creation.  Pretty much redefined the art.  He will be missed.

Yeah, The loss of Stan Winston leaves a big loss in the FX Industry as well as a sad moment for all those that worked for him or had him working as part of their crew. He had such a limitless imagination and love for movie monsters. Hopefully his staff at Stan Winston Studios will keep his legacy going strong in the coming years.

I even met him at WizCon 2002 when I was there and talked with him for hours between fan signings while he was showing off some segments of independent movies projects that he was working on (I believe they were modern movie remakes of Earth vs The Spider and a few others that he also produced as well as doing the FX for) and a line of action figures based on those movies. Since I was working as part of the volunteer security crew that weekend he signed my WizCon Staff shirt and even flipped thru my script/sketch bible for a comic I've been working on during a lunch break to give me some pointers. It was a great memory from that Con and now a great way to remember him personally.  :(

I read about this with sadness, too.   I hope, though, that the greatest legacy he leaves behind is not just his great and innovative FX work throughout some of our most beloved films ... but a vast next generation of FX masters that learned so much by working with him.
