Before watching The Ruins yesterday, I saw a trailer for Tropic Thunder.  I hadn't heard of this movie before seeing the trailer, and I must say I am looking forward to this one.  I really enjoy Jack Black & Robert Downey Jr. although sometimes Ben Stiller is a miss.  However, from what I understand, Stiller is also the director of the movie so that may work. (I loved Zoolander which he also directed.)
Robert Downey Jr. is taking on a controversial role in this movie, but truthfully it had me in stitches just seeing in the trailer.

Here's the trailer.  See for yourself:

Tropic Thunder is due to be released on August, 15th.

One of the guys at work showed me the trailer  a few weeks ago.  I am actually looking out for this one - loved the trailer, and Downey's role, though potentially controversial (but I hope not, he's playing a white actor playing a black man), is frickin' hillarious.

Hope it lives up to the trailer.

I don't get why there's real-life controversy over Downey's role-- the entire joke with him is that it's a completely retarded thing to do. The filmmakers know exactly how ridiculous it is-- that's why it's funny.

Argh.

People make me angry.

It's because certain people have nothing better to do than to go looking for racism, bigotry, and discrimination.  And when you go looking for something hard enough, you start seeing it everywhere.

Granted, these things do exist, but there's no reason to go making controversies where they don't really exist.

Most noobs aren't smart enough to look past the initial act and see the ironic twist. Because they're noobish and all.

So the cat has to walk by himself because he's a black cat? So what, basically your username says that blacks are loners and don't have friends? YOU ARE CONTROVERSIAL SIR!

THis looks interesting, except for Jack Black.  But he can be funny sometimes. ^_^

Funny, I feel the same way about Ben Stiller . . .

Meet the Parents was the most painful 2 hours I've ever spend in a movie theater!

Quick heads up:

Fake movie (and product) sites have appeared to promote the projects of the thespians potrayed in the film.

http://www.fatties2.com/ (fart jokes a-go-go)

Nothing major, but still amusing.

I'm really hoping this movie will have some fake trailers at the start. I love that kind of thing, like they did in Grindhouse.

Apparently there is additional controversy surrounding this movie.  Various associations for the mentally disabled are protesting due to one of Ben Stillers' character's previous role being a retarded hero or something.

I didn't read much of the news story because like the racial controversy with RDJ's character, the opponents really seem to be stretching here.  They really should realize that with movies bad press is often more effective for sales than good press.

But both sides like that. The movie side gets the press they want and the activists get much better fund-raising when their cause is in the news.

I saw the trailer for this a while back and it looked hilarious. Of course, this sort of movie has that "better as a trailer" risk, where everything funny that happens is basically in the trailer. May be a renter...

From what I understand the the gag in question really is more mocking of Hollywood actors who play mentally challenged roles as Oscar-Bait.

The only other big opening is that Star Wars animated thing which apparently is beyond incredibly bad... so IF I were at the theater this weekend, there is no contest.

I liked the movie alot. I could see where it could offend people but I still liked it in all its offensive glory

GrizzlyBearTalon

Not seen it yet but here is yet another site...

Oh yeah the booty sweat thing where you put in a friends number is really funny.

I generally liked it... but it suffered the same for me as Pineapple Express in that the setup and a lot of the jokes weren't quite as funny as they could have been. Also Ben Stiller's character just didn't work for me. Early on I liked him, but as his character progressed he went a little too stupidly over the top - I kept getting hints of Zoolander lite. Even Jack Black's manic character seemed more grounded in the film. Still entertaining though and its worth it for Robert Downey Jr.

I will agree that all the supplemental fringe stuff like the trailers and fake movies and what are pretty funny.

Blkcasanova247

I for one loved this movie. It was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a very long time. I'm not normally a fan of Stillers movies but this was just awesome.
And Tom Cruise...man...who knew? He was frackin' HYSTERICAL!
Wow, the Kirk Lazarus site made me laugh out loud. That's really funny stuff.

TheMarvell

I thought the movie was mediocre. I really only laughed hard at a few parts and a few chuckles here and there. It was slightly disappointing to me as a number of people told me how hilarious it is and I didn't laugh nearly as much as I thought I would.  :(

Previsionary

I don't consider this movie to be 'LOL' material. There're funny parts sure, but most of the humor basically came from the satires, parodies, and references, me thinks. None of the so called "comedies" of this year have made me bust a gut. However, I almost didn't recognize Matthew M, and a certain actor being in the movie was pretty cool since it shows he can laugh at himself. Though, that actor had some awkward scenes, imo. However, I am pretty tired of Jack Black these days. His role in the movie just flashed me back to his Tenacious D persona and...blah, he needs a new shtick.

Overall, it's a 6 or 7 out of 10.
