Glitch Girl

Well, first the good news: I leave for Dragon Con this week.  My favorite convention in Atlanta and I'm looking forward to it.  Will try to share at least a short report afterwards.

the so-so news: my friends are still split, so only half of them will be sharing the room.  I might see the other half there, but I don't know.  Don't know how things are going to be if they run into each other.  I can hope it's positive I guess.

the bad: my computer at home is not well.  Sunday morning I woke up to a clicking hard drive due to (what I suspect was) a lightning based powerhit overnight since we've been having the fallout from Fay here.  The main boot drive is DOA, and the secondary drive (which has all my projects) is in iffy state.  It's still at the repair place and I won't know anything further until noon.  I've fallen out of the habit of burning backups, so there's a lot of work to lose.  I know it's just stuff, but I put a lot of myself into some of those projects.  Sorry, feeling really bummed right now, even in light of the pending convention.  Timing just really stinks on this one.

anyway, back to work.  whee...

what?

Sorry to hear that you may have lost that project drive. I have had that sinking feeling, where you know you can get along without the files, but you also feel like you've lost a little chunk of yourself because that's what you put into the projects. Often, the data (or most of it) will be recoverable. <fingers crossed>

I hope you have fun at Dragon Con. I've read your trip reports before and they sound like a good time.

Mr. Hamrick

hey GG,

I will be at Dragon Con too.  Will try to get a report up as well.  If you want to rendezvous for an hour or so like last year then let me know.

Planning to meet up with other friends this year so I don't know when I will be where.  (or where I am staying this year for that matter)

Ouch. Hate to hear that Glitchy. My second hard drive died a couple of weeks ago. I stored all my Photoshop docs and pictures on that drive. :(

Here's hopin' you get everything back!

For those bad hard drives, try freezing them.  Seriously, it's worked several times for me, and I've been able to recover data.

Yeah lose yourself in the convention.  The other stuff should work out.  The comic con is no place for drama outside of the comics.  I hope you're able to enjoy it to the fullest.

BWPS

I didn't get to go to D*C this year, but my sisters and their friends are going to see all Buffy-related people. Not that anyone including me cares.

:( as far as your hard drive goes. I'm really sorry to hear about it, but at least you can tell your super powers are still working.

The Phantom Eyebrow

Sorry to hear about the drive GG.  Hopefully some of the ideas here or something else you try out will work.  In the meantime, enjoy the Con!

DireWolf

Sending you good karma, lady....

Glitch Girl

Thanks guys.  I appreciate the well wishes.

This will probably be my last post for about a week.  Looks like I'm going to get a new computer instead of repairing the old one due to cost.  Gonna order it before I leave so hopefully it won't be long after I get back that I get to hook it up.  Still not 100% sure how the project drive is, but that will have to wait I guess.

Here goes nothing!

Got back yesterday, had a GREAT time.  Will try to report more soon, but I'm at work and still have no home PC (but should soon).  Ran into Hamrick while I was there a couple of times (both while I was headed for another panel, I do many panels and events).  Got a ton of pictures too I gotta sort through as soon as I download 'em.

In the meantime, check out Abney Park, a Steam Punk band I got to hear live while I was there and loved 'em.  You should see their instruments - all of them, even the violin, are modded to look as steampunkish as possible.

Con report coming eventually.  Promise.  :)

Glad that you had fun, can't wait to hear the stories from the convention.

That does work but once you have it working, BACKUP THE DRIVE.  Once the drive heats up it will start to fail again.

I HAS COMPUTER!!!!  :D :D :D

Ladies and Gentlemen, meet "Tony", my new companion. I was going to name it "Majel" Again, but because it's got a glowing blue ring around the power button, "Tony" seemed more apropo.

Still in the process of reinstalling  EVERYTHING, but it's so nice to be able to do stuff again.  Go Me! :)

Ah, the blush of a shiny new computer!  Is there anything so sweet?  At least until the next processor comes out . . .
