ff2 trend

Just a general observation...more of a question really.  I've been noticing more and more of the skins and meshes that are being created are for  :ffvstr:.  Are you noticing this as well?  Do you think this is a general trend away from  :ff:?  If so, what do you suppose is the reason for that???

So much of the really great work being done right now by Afghan Ant, Renegade, Volsung etc are only for  :ffvstr:.  It's making me think seriously about going out and getting ff2 and converting my favorite mesh/skin combos over to  :ffvstr:.  Hmmmmmmmmmmm...

it's mainly because of the compatability thing.  when i just got back, i was using  :ffvstr: becuase of that.  then i installed a new windows on my hard drive just so i could  :ff:.  i think it's worth it, i can mod it so much better.
for meshing, it's easier for me to export for  :ff: and then convert to  :ffvstr:.  the skins seem to work for either, unless the skin is dds.

Renegade

Creating only for   :ffvstr: has been something I intended to do since the game came out. I was talked into continuing to support  :ff: and did, but it's been two years and I'm moving on (except with FX meshes as there is no option for making them work natively as :ffvstr: meshes). A big part of it is time. It can take up to twice as long to export mesh for  :ff: as it does for  :ffvstr:. For example, USAgent can take up to 20 minutes just for MAX to export for  :ff:, as opposed to 8 minutes for  :ffvstr: (the Cap variants are huge files). Start multiplying that time by the number of meshes and you are looking at hours that my computer is tied up. Throw in having to test out the  :ff: version and correct any wierdness that may have cropped up and frankly, I've got better things to do.

And let's not overlook that the ToyBox bandwidth is doubled for each zip file I have to store that holds both versions instead of just one. I'm paying for the site out of my own pocket, so bandwidth is always an issue.

There are tons of meshes out there for  :ff: so people have options. But for me, with FFX and EZscript making  :ffvstr: rock like a B52's concert, I don't even load up  :ff: anymore. I'd delete it from my HD altogether, but I don't need the space right now.

So by all means I encourage you to get  :ffvstr:. I'll even make it easy for you:

Another factor is the incredible new things offered by FFX 3.  Even before 3.2, it was pretty sweet, and far beyond anything capable in FF.

all of these things are true.  however, i am compelled to keep  :ff:, not just because i can mod it, but becuase of the mods already made for it.
if there were an easy way to convert strangers, or even custom force x, not to mention avengers special, and the list goes on...if there were an easy way to play those on  :ffvstr:, i would drop  :ff: like it was hot.
so, it's worth it to me to even go so far as to have seperate versions of windows, for those mods alone.  not to mention my own mod.

The Phantom Eyebrow

I love both games, pretty much for the reasons outlined by the various proponents here.  If you enjoyed FF then you should certainly buy FFv3R.  The FFX / Rumble Room mods make much better battles than were available in FF.  There are less new full campaigns put together for FFv3R than the original but there's some still great stuff out there.

One thing though (and at the risk of flogging a dead horse), if you are in Europe make sure you buy the Irrational Games version and NOT the version distributed by Digital Jesters.  DJ restructured the files of the game, making it more difficult to modify.  Mods made by others can still generally be installed but might need a little bit of minor tweaking to work.  Get the Irrational Games version to avoid these problems.

As someone who didn't bother getting FFvTTR, the reason was simple: It wasn't worth it. Yeah, I kinda-sorta wanted it but meh, better to wait until I can get it on ebay for $10. Most meshes were FFvTTR exclusive, the mods were for ff1, as were fx... there was no reason to upgrade.

Podmark

When I finally get things up and running properly I'll be going to FF2 exclusively. It's just easier at this point.

USAgent

I personally feel  :ffvstr: is worth the buy, especially now that you can get it next to nothing.  The game itself is shorter than the original and not AS enjoyable as the first (story wise). But it is leaps and bounds better than the first game when it comes to replay value with all the customs out there.

M25 custom AI alone is sole enough reason to get the game.  If your tired of the lame computer controlled AI in the danger rooms for your hero files with the constant flying away when they should be duking it out, not using active defences, specials, direct attacks...ect, ect. Then  :ffvstr: with M25s AI is the way to go.  The computer controlled characters actually have artifical inteligence, they use their active defences, specials (teleport, invisable, sprint, ect) strong characters pick up stuff and throw at flyers, they use their attacks wisely.

The only 2 things that i didnt like with  :ffvstr: were the way the energy system was dumbed down, and the way active defences are used now (you can no longer knock points off the defences, it just stays on until the time runs out of it)

...just another reason to switch over the the new game!

FLASH_22798

I bought FFvt3R, but unfortunately, my computer didn't support it.   When my wife had taken it to get fixed, the guy who worked on it did something to my disk drive.   I don't get to play FF1, but I still get to make stuff for it.

My point is, is that some of us are stuck for whatever reason with FF1.   Personally, I still enjoy it, and I hope that others are enjoying the skins and skopes that I get to produce for FF1.

Dr.Volt

Hmmmmmmmmm...very interesting povs.  It does indeed seem like there is a shift towards  :ffvstr:.  Good to know!  Thanks to all of you for your insightful comments!

I do have to say that I really can identify with US Agent's comment about  :ff:'s limited AI in the danger room.  I have been perturbed by the tendency for baddies to fly away instead of going toe to toe and NOT using their active defences.  And I mostly use the Danger Room truth be told...time, time, time, time...Hmmmmmmmmmmm...
