FF Video permission

Hi, just asking to see what you guys think.
U think its ok to edit models and skins, without authors' direct permission, so long as you don't release the files?

The reason I ask is because I want to use some community made models and skins to make some animations.
I can easily credit the authors for their parts of the work, but it may not be possible to first get permission from every1 who did the model or skin. Do you guys think this would cause anger?

I would like to put some animations on youtube, but I don't want to pee off the guys whose work I'm so appreciative of.

I think if you try to PM/email any of the creators/artists you'll have your answer. Most of their information is generally easy to find here but I definitely don't think its ok to use someone's art in a public forum without permission. Do a little leg work my friend and reap the rewards.  ;)

I'd agree,

I'm sure most would like to have their work showcased with their credits attached.  But when in doubt, it's a good rule of thumb to ask, especially when using someone else's stuff.

The Nemesis

Indeed. My policy is to ask whoever is still around, and if someone has moved on and theres no way of getting in touch, then risk it and hope credits are enough.

Does anyone know if Electro had all permissions before making Freedom Force Gold?

I think it should be easy since most artists say in the readme "do whatever so long as you tell me".
A few need more than that though. An obvious person I need to ask is Courtnal, although he gave me permission to use John Stewart ages ago, so I imagine he wont have a problem if I ask again for others.

the_ultimate_evil

the best thing you can do is if there not around and you can't contact then forget it and move on to another idea

Lunarman

I'd take the readme's first, if they say go ahead then go ahead. Otherwise try e-mailing/pming them. if you get no response post who you're after here and maybe some of us will know what kinda stance they had to use of their skins.

In answer to your question Electro probably didn't have permission for FFgold as he's done projects in the past including other peoples work without any credits or permission.

tommyboy

If you want to use any meshes or skins by me, you have my permission.
Credit would be nice, but I understand that in a 1 minute utube video a 30 second "credits" portion is a bit much, so I guess we may need to do without that.
Perhaps you could post a list here of what meshes and skins you use, and who made them, and perhaps include a link in the video or its utube info?

The Nemesis

Yeah Tommyboy, I think I will do that.
I will definitely be placing a link to here. It's really for this community that I want to release the vids, but if it helps bring other people here thats a bonus.
And thanks for permission to use your stuff. They are a great asset to the community and should be very useful.

@ the_ultimate_evil, while I'm not out to offend anyone, if we all decided to move on from an idea because we couldn't contact someone for permission, would this community exist?
Just to play devil's advocate, did anyone get permission from Marvel/DC before making skins?

This is the irony in what I'm trying to do, hehe. I'm hoping to play it kosher as far as those who made the skins and models are concerned, but ultimately the people who's permission I really need, (Marvel/DC) I will never get.

I actually agree with you, Nemesis, but this is an old topic and, unfortunately, you're making a losing argument.  The community is pretty emphatic on this, so you'll have to either create the models yourself or use the ones that include a release/readme.

On the bright side, with Nifskope and the tom versatile, you can pretty much make any character...

Actually I was asking a question :P.
However I see how it may be pointless for you guys to cover that ground if u have already done so.
The community does ironically seem very strict regarding permission so I'll do my best to stick with that.

detourne_me

hey,  im assuming your DR. Nemesis in that Binary Picture Show (the link in your sig)?
your machinima work is sick man.
hoping you go through with your FF projects, from the looks of your other work, it would be really good.

It's not that we're strict...but this topic has been discussed up and down so many times in 4 years that the us members just stick to a guideline now. Also, it's just a respect issue. I wont get into the legalities and all, since that's an even longer road to go down that has also been brought up time and time again. Nothing brought up here is really new to the older members anymore...you just wouldnt know it since all those discussions aren't accessible. Anyway, good luck with your project. I'm pretty sure that most of the creators for FF will say yes to having their work shown off to a wider audience.

My skins aren't available anymore but I'll weigh in anyway.

If I were contacted and told about the animation before hand I would be perfectly alright with it. Personally I would also like some type of credit but that's just me.:D

Yes that's me, and thanks. I indeed should be able to go ahead with this since most readme's aren't strict on permission. I'll try to notify all concerned anyway.

Previs, like I said, I understand if you don't want to cover old ground. No explanation needed.

zuludelta

I sort of doubt that my old skins and hex edits are in your planned video, but go ahead and use them... I don't think inclusion in the video does any of the artists concerned any real disservice or grossly misrepresents them in any way, especially if it's viewed as a testament to the effort they've poured into the game.
