You know what's sad? Mainstream american studios have done worse (Roger Corman FF anyone?). Still yeah, I've seen bits and pieces of the japanese show through youtube mostly and it's taaaacky.

Like in most Japanese series of this genre, the enemy HAS to grow big, or else get a big robot version of themselves, so the hero or heroes can fight them in THEIR big robot, or growing powers.

Much like cat said, that is a staple of japanese television. More jarring still is when you are watching a japanese drama and a character grows several stories tall and turns into a robot to confront a lover that cheated on him. Likewise it's weird watching the news and seeing the newscaster jump into a high tech mecha before relaying some particularly intense news.

I know that it's just a bizzaro cultural-difference thing, but I could watch Japanese TV all day. Have you seen any of their comedy, variety, or game-shows? It just makes me scream with laughter. It's so over-the-top that it becomes entertaining in an almost scary way. :P

I didn't think it was that bad. I'm a fan of Ultraman and Specterman. All the classics; Space Giants, Johnny Socko, etc.... And it's tons better than Turkish Star Wars.

Yeah, they do have some over the top stuff. I couldn't get into Most Extreme Challenge when it was on cable here because of the silly dubbing, but I have watched Ninja Warrior a couple of times.
