It's the subtle differences... (green lantern edition)

Hey, I was wondering how you guy's differentiate Jon, Hal, Kyle, Guy, Kilowog and other members. Im not a huge DC reader but the Sinestro Corps has me all riled up to get a bunch of ring wielding good and bad guys into the rumble room.

Did you create custom (green) minnions for any of those characters? Any one has special relevant skills?

USAgent

I did 28 members of the Green Lantern corps and one of my biggest issues was how to make them each a little different from each other, and since I wasnt a big green lantern fan, it took alot of digging.  At first I would give ones crushing beam attacks and others piercing attacks and others energy attacks, but decieded that wouldnt represent their abilities to the fullest, so each of them have a energy, piercing, crushing(and some heat) ranged attacks, and I used all the available green beam and projectile fx available out there to try and make there attacks look different.
The more "seasoned" Corps veterens I upper their damage alittle for their ranged attacks (20 points) and the lesser knowns or "rookies" I game them (18 points) of damage.  And a few of the meshes had multi ranged projectiles keyframes so I took advantage of those.
Some of themare noted to have unique abilities, like Kilowog is a super strong guy so I gave him different emerald melee attacks, and I usually just gave most of the others one melee.  I gave them all the same attributes except a few had natural body armor healing and other thinigs to make them unique.

I havnt released them yet because I'm always tweeking them, and I wanted to see if the the new sinistro corp series was gonna help me with them further.

The way I differentiate them is by just giving they different green colored FX and damage. For projectile I try to vary it up by choosing some of the options: heat seeking, fragmenting, chain, grenade, proximity and damage radius.

One thing I have been trying to do, but failing miserably, is having Sinestro summon Irrational's T-Rex mesh. I made a re-colored yellow version so it looked like a construct. My problem is that I'm not well versed with FFX.

One of the things about the Green Lanterns and Sinestro Corps is they do a lot of their fighting with constructs. I also re-colored Irrational's U.S. Soldier mesh green so Hal Jordan could summon a bunch of them and have them fight for him. But like my attempt at Sinestro's T-Rex construct....nothing but failure on my part.

Also I'm really bad at making HERO files........my Guy Gardner can take out Superman with only a small bit of trouble

EDIT: Another thing I've been wanting to do was make the Sinestro Corps member Despotelis a custom FX(he's microscopic, so a mesh is out of the question...not to mention he'd be impossible to see in-game)
He could then be a power some of the Sinestro Corps could have with varying attack effects. EXAMPLE: When he infects a Green Lantern, they could go berserk, be mind controlled so they fight against the GLC, or poisened so they slowly take damage over time.

i pretty much echo these sentiments -- i don't think there's really a bad way to make a GL hero file.

i tend to make the hero files reflect their personalities, as defined over the last few years, which means Kilowog and Guy Gardner are more direct with their attacks, with more regular beams, while i give Guy, Hal, John and Kyle more attacks with finesse-like FX, like the boxing glove or rocket glove or mini-rockets, things like that.

it takes a little to get them just different enough where they feel "right," but the ones i care most about (Guy, Hal and Kyle) are different enough for me to kinda notice the difference when i turn 'em loose.

Hey guys, this is something I've thought about too.  I'm really not happy with how similar all of my DCU entries are for these guys.  I'd be really interested in those herofiles USAgent!

Part of what I do to differentiate them is adjusting the energy levels of the characters and the energycost of the powers.  Hal is pretty much #1 for me - he has the highets energy Stat oout of my Corps files and his attacks are the least draining (tho not necessarily every one of them is th emost powerful of it's kind) Gardner, for instance, has straight up damage dealing attacks on par with Jordan, but his 'extra' powers are not as refined (powerful)

Kyle has slightly less damaging attacks and slower recharging energy, but laso has some cooler animations to account for his creativity.  I only have Guy, Hal, Alan, Jade, Stewart and Rayner, so maybe I am not as desperate as the rest of you yet! :)

I use ffx to make my lanterns more variable

my kilowag has private army and comes with some rookie lanterns

kyle the artist uses the summoner attribute to summon dragons, cowboys and robots, he can shapeshift into an anime like battle suit, and uses angelic ally to summon a green giant robot

as ion  and parrallax he can summon younger versions of himself

hal the pilot uses plasma sculptor to drop green nukes from above, summons soldiers, tanks, jets, he shapeshifts into skyking type armor and uses the attribute megablast at 4x power ( green lanterns might)

alan scott has weather control with green fireballs falling from the sky and green lighting strikes

still working on alan and the others lanterns (john guy)

:o wow those sound really cool.....I gotta get better with FFX

Hey Thor_Reborn, I like the Hal Jordan and Kyle Rainer files you posted.  Here's my plan for John Stewart -- in the comics, he's an architect.   Using FFX more in an environmental alteration strategy:

For detaining enemies, I give him a 'crystal cage' swap power, with the FX of a green bubble (might look for a cube or square-shaped cage)

He can build walls of green energy, or slippery areas, using Ice Control.  But these would have to be re-skinned green.

I like giving all GL's an area energy burst with high knock-back, at a high energy cost, to make a tactical wothdrawal if needed.

As they depicted in the JLU animated series, John is very direct with the ring's energy, he doesn't usually make complicated structures when he's in a fight.  His summoned minion could just be a green giant or titan, with a sword.  Like he did in the episode where he was sparring with Superman.

Then he has the standard crushing beam, piercing projectile, and energy laser.

I also usually give Lanterns a low-effect area energy-drain, simulating their recharging by siphoning the ambient energy.  I saw Kyle do this but I'm not sure if the others do this.

which lantern do you think would summon a weapon (axe or hammer) for his pal (superman to weild)
what do think kyle or guy  would drop on a villians head? (green bus, green building, etc)

Kyle would drop a giant green eraser :P

I'd say Guy or Hal would give an axe or hammer for someone else to wield

my 2 cents

What do you get when you apply a layer of yellow paint to the aliens mesh and make it a private army?

btw total kitbash, but you guy's should be able to paint your own aliens yellow to achieve this effect.

Yup, that is indeed cool. I gotta figure this FFX thing out.

Revenant

By tweaking some materials values in nifSkope, you can achieve a glowing effect for meshes. I used ambient color (so the shadows aren't so dark) and emissive color.

BentonGrey

Some good ideas there TR, I may have to incorporate some of those!

lugaru

Ok... so far I've HAD to give characters a bit of a personality so here's what I did:

Hal: the experienced one. He's good at everything, with particularly accurate attacks and some creative ring uses.

Kyle Radner: The summoner. I've repainted all manner of anime robots for him. Beyond that his attacks are mostly shaped.

Jon Stewart: The smart one. Hey, he's an architect so he has a degree. Jon is good at putting force fields on his buddies, creating cages and structures, has some unique plasma sculpting tricks.

Kilowog: Ugh, I dont have his mesh yet. When I get it I think he will have 7 str (bosted by the ring giving him harder punches and heavy lifter or else metabolic) and powerful but expensive blasts.

Guy Gardner: The warrior. Good blasts but most of his attacks are missiles and stuff like that to reflect his time summoning weapons out of his body.

Need some help though... does anybody know if there's a tutorial on making custom objects? Not just for my green lanterns but there's other ideas I have that I really want to do (such as freeze barrels in the original game).

Hmm, I think I'll try and tweak some of my lanterns today, but I need some of those green and yellow flavored skins y'all are using, especially cowboy, robots, and the like.  Can anyone help me out?

I remember sending *someone* my yellow recolors, but can't remember who.  If it wasn't you, BG, I can send ya what I got: Mechman, Anvil (for the Sculptor drop), barricade, and maybe a couple other things.

BentonGrey

I've got those PG, and thanks, Sinestro makes good....or is that evil, use of them! ^_^
