House Quake

Hey peeps.

I've been lurking around for awhile trying to keep up with a good amount of what's been going on since troubles concerning my health and personal life took front stage about a year ago.   I've tried repeatedly to get back into the swing off things and re-establish NPI as one of the essential sites for the 'original' gamer.

But nooo!

Every time I think I'm getting started something kicks me back down a flight of friggin' stairs.

I've been talking with Carravaggio as of late about what we need to do to right the NPI ship so to speak.  There are a few other community peeps of importance I've needed to contact as well once I had something more solid to say (Zuludelta, Shazam/Voltimax, Death's Jester, etc).  But just as I started to have something to bring to the table........

"Heeeeyahhhhh"... 'WHACK'... drop kick to the chest down the stairs and out the door!

My friggin' host moves to a new location... 'ohh... better more reliable servers... 99.9% up time... better web management system etc'

Sounded cool right...?

HAH!   A few people noticed.... but when they did the move last week...  THEY FRIGGIN' LOST THE CONTENT OF EVERY WEB FOLDER FROM 'J' ON DOWN!  In other words... all of Valandar's, Vertex's, Zuludelta's and a few others files were gone.... as well as files I use personally for my MP3s... Myspace page etc.

It took them three days to find the stuff!

Then I discovered another problem with the 'improved web management system'.  Previously it allowed the usage of Frontpage as a web authoring tool.  New Power INC is completely built using FP.  Additionally, I had access to my server via FTP for other users to upload files... manage their own web pages etc... as well as for other personal uses.

The problem now is that Frontpage only works 'properly' with certain web extensions enabled on the server... which previously had been no problem.  The problem now is that if I activate my FP extensions...... NO ONE CAN ACCESS THE SERVER VIA FTP!!!  But with out the FP extensions NPI sites like Meshworks will be difficult to manage.  I'm fluid enough with HTML/CSS to do so but...........  I was not expecting to have to do a rebuild from the ground up.

:banghead:

So...ehhh... NPI ain't dead yet!  Just wrapped up in a cocoon hibernating and we're just waiting to see what pops out in the upcoming months.

Sorry to hear about your health problems, HQ. I really had no idea.

I'm glad to hear you're still devoted to NPI and Freedom Force after all of the health problems HQ.  Sorry about "improved service"  thats always a loaded phrase...   beware it and others sounding like it,  "value-added", "under new management", "same old style, new great taste" etc.

HumanTon

Sorry to hear about your problems, HQ. But thanks for all the hard work you've put into keeping NPI around. We appreciate it!

catastrophe

Welcome back HQ, sorry to hear about the web problems but i think its great that your still into FF

billdamn22

Sorry about your health issues. The work you have always put into keeping FF alive is greatly appreciated. I commend you for still putting forth the effort. Thank you.

Epimethee

Happy to hear you're still around, HQ! I hope the health and other personal issues sort themselves out for the best.

As for the NPI hosting issues... yikes. Frontpage is a dead product (replaced by Expression Web), which may begin to explain the issue. Having had to clean up its crappy non-standard HTML code and work around its proprietary web server mechanisms a couple times, on one hand I'd say good riddance. On the other, what you're experiencing feels like your provider threw out the baby with the bath's water. Ouch.

Lunarman

Good luck with everything. I'm glad to hear your still fighting for NPI :P

You can do it

style

Nice to hear from you HQ we missed you. Take care of your self first bro! ;)

BentonGrey

Hey man, I'm glad you're still in the game, even if things are rough.  I hope that you can come out on top of all this, and whatever happens, we'll all be eagerly awaiting the return of NPI to its former glory!

UnfluffyBunny

atleast they know where your pages are, i'm still paying for the asylum and they wont even give me the location of the pages

chuckles

I'm glad to hear from you, and I hope your health gets back on track.

Thanks for trying to get NPI running again too.

Outcast

I really hope things improve for you House Quake.

Thanks for all the time and hard work you've put into NPI.

Shazam

Hello, big guy, missed this thread, but then I've been preoccupied with other matters too. Hope things are working themselves out for you. Perhaps we'll chat soon. All the best and thanks for the effort.

HQ: I didn't hear back from you so i took the liberty of checking if you were on our servers (i hope you don't mind) while I am at work, and you are on ours.

I'll look into the situation and I'll see if there is anything I can do to help you out... If I can I will. It may end up being true that you will have to leave FrontPage behind but we'll see and I'll let you know for sure.

update:

i checked and it looks like someone has allready overridden the ftp access vs frontpage issue for you. you shouldn't have any problems. if you are missing any content pm me and let me know and i'll talk to our network team about restoring it for you. email won't be save-able and you may lose database related content but if it's just managed manually the way i suspect it is... all of that will be  recoverable. =)
Yeah... thanx Simo.  I read the replies in the thread kinda late.  And yep as of right now... everything has been restored.  'whew'.  I'm not too crazy about the new control panel and all... but I can get use to it.  There were a few minor alterations related to php scripts running off of the data base I had trouble with; the servers 'absolute' paths to directories is no longer standard for unix servers..... and I'm sure other people will have had issues with this.

But all in all if the service has kicked up a notch.  I like being able to call toll free with issues .

I'm going to go on the advice I read here and from others concerning web authoring programs and pull away from FP all together.  i know enough HTML/CSS not to be so reliant..or limited by it right now.. so as long as whats currently up holds together till further notice... everytthing will be cool.

As far as well wishes from everyone... thank you.  The past year or two have both been rough mentally and emotionally.  This of course aggravated health conditions I have and took major tools on me physically.  After spending three months in a rehabilitation /nursing center receiving treatments for my most severe problems (adema / lymphoedema) I've been pretty much stable.  But I still need to go through another round of treatment for it in about a month.  But I'll be able to do it at home this time since I'm not in a life threatening situation like before.

Ah.. that sucks. My mom had to deal with that, so I know its a pain in the butt. Hope things continue on the positive side for a while, for you.

And props to IPS - very classy sir.
