What's the best salvage option?

Recently, I picked up some high value salvage like Hami Goo and Prophecies.  Hami sell for around 5 mil, prophecies around 3 million.   Do you guys:

a) keep them for your own IO sets
b) sell them as salvage at WW
c) buy inexpense recipes that require them and then are even more valuable as crafted IOs.

The reason I ask is because I've seen some IOs now selling for like 20 million.   But how long do they stay on the market?

I need opinions based on experience.   Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Basically, here's what I do:

1) Use them to craft specific IO's that I need for my build (Only if I have the recipe already)
2) Sell them to finance other IO's and salvage I'll need for my build

As for crafting and selling, make sure that the cost of the recipe plus the cost of the salvage plus the cost of crafting is less than the sale price...otherwise you'll be losing influence/infamy.  Often, the IO's are expensive because of the salvage cost associated with them.  An IO that requires hami goo to create will sell for 3 million or more strictly because of the hami goo.

Typically the most profitable IO's to craft are cheap recipes that require cheap salvage and sell for a couple million.  It takes a little market research to find these recipes, but they're out there.  For a while, I was buying a certain recipe for 500k, the associated salvage for 5k, crafting it for 400k and selling them for 5 mil, until others caught on.  I made 350 mil in about month (15 minutes a day).

Woah, that's a LOT of influence.

Thanks for the feedback, Eph.

I tend to sell most everything until I begin to pick up those upper-level arcane pieces.  Those I horde away in storage until I need them for sets.  If you are serious about tricking out your toon with a lot of rare IOs, you can count on needing most if not all of the ultra-expensive arcanes like Hami Goo, Pangean Soil, Prophecies, etc. at least once.  With my first set-based toon, I depleted all of my priciest rare salvage and still needed to buy more.  This is with sets yet left in my plan for him that I haven't bought yet.

This is not the most lucrative way to go.  You can do a little more market-study than I did and see at what price-point you might reliably be able to sell a given piece of salvage high, then at which price you'll be able to buy low within a reasonable time (as well as craft-low/sell-high as Eph mentioned).  This will net you more profit as you go; I was just too lazy and strapped for time to do it this way.  Which market are you thinking about?  The hero market is more stable and moves merchandise faster than does the villain market.

The kind of profit you can make depends on how much you're willing to spend time learning and playing the market "mini-game".  My personal choice has been to use rare drops to allay inevitable costs more than rack up the cash, but that's because I have just enough time to enjoy playing my toons and a little extra to be working the economy.

I'm on the hero side.   In the past I'm sold the rare salvage for a good price and then concentrated on buying IOs that ran only about 1 mil apiece.   The reason I'm asking now is because it seems that the same IOs that I used to buy for that price have now skyrocketed -- even the recipes.
