Those of you that know me may (or may not) know that I am a huge fan of old-time radio shows. Dimension-x, Suspense, Lights Out were all great series and all hold up well today.  Well, as I was surfing across the intertubes, I happened to stumble upon this:

http://wormwoodshow.com/

A free series that's a)high quality, b) doesn't insult your intelligence and c) both pretty bleeping compelling and pretty bleeping scary.  Recommended HIGHLY.

And while I was surfing the bounty of links from that- while listening to the tale of Dr. Xander Crowe, I happened to stumble across this:

http://www.circus13productions.com/ironman/index.shtml

Free audio shows about superheroes? I'm so there. And they're auditioning for new voices!  Ever think you could voice Green Arrow, for example?

I was so giddy I just had to share with y'all.  Enjoy! I know I will!

Actually, the guy in charge of Circus13 voiced some stuff in Liberty Bay, so I do know the fellow.

Love old time radio myself...

...thrilled I have some old Shadow stuff - of course.  But most interesting to me were the old Blue Beetle shows I came across.  Finding Fantastic Four was incredible!  The scripts were straight from the comics and the voices are some very familiar names.  Stumbled upon some Doc Savage too.

...Across the pond they have some AWESOME radio theater.  The Superman & Batman ones I have are incredible.

... have a nice small collection myself.

Here is another spot you may want to stop by and see.

I like old radio drama too.  I was mostly into the Cowboy stuff like Six Shooter, Hop Along Cassidy, Tales of the Texas Rangers, and Gunsmoke (hence the signature I used to have).  But the sci-fi was my favorite, just harder to come by.

I'm a fan of all sorts of different radio shows, but the series I have the most episodes of is The Shadow, including the Lost Shows set which includes an episode of the Australian version of the show where he battles an actual alien.

Anyone like Box 13? That was a radio show starring Alan Ladd and was a very good series. You can find episodes here: http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_Box_13_Singles

Have any of you ever listened to the 1940s radio show "The Adventures of Superman" with Bud Collyer as Clark and Jane Alexander as Lois?    It's a classic - although a real kid's show -- with lots of the original commercials for PEP cereal.  It's running right now on Sirrus radio and also on CD through Radio Spirits.

Collyer was the first actor to come up with the different voices for Clark and Kal, and radio first introduced the concept of kryptonite.

What makes it so fun is that Clark is more like the Supes of the Max Fleisher cartoons, not as uber, and of course he's a total racist as you might expect from characters of those times.   It's amazing how offensive he can be to so many different types of people.

But my favorite part is whenever he teams up with Batman and Robin.  The Dynamic Duo is constantly getting beat up by a mob of say, four bad guys, using ultra deadly weapons ... like their fists.

Once, Batman and Robin fall into a trap:  a deep well or sewer with constantly rising water ... the kind of death trap we've seen Bats work his way out of a million times.   After telling Robin to try to stay afloat, he finally comes up with an escape plan worthy of his legendary status.

He takes a deep, slow breath ... and then ...

... screams "HELP!!!   HELLLLLLPPPPPPP!"

And Superman comes to his rescue.   It is priceless.

It's incredibly entertaining.   And some of the stories, like when Lois is framed for murder ... and when Clark falls headfirst into the most imaginative kryptonie death trap I've ever heard of ... are actually wonderful pieces of superhero drama.

I heartily recommend that anyone who loves Supes listen to this serial.

I second Pendant Audio.  Their ongoing series are all pretty good with some good ploting and writing.

Darker Projects is also worth listening to.  They have two original series based on Star Trek that are very good, as well as one based on an unknown book, the Falcon Banner, that is VERY good (and officially endorsed by the author) and are just starting one based on No Man's Land.  This is besides a lot of other things.

Great link!  I was humming the theme song the other day.  It's the show that inspired me to become a writer...well  it's still a dream of mine.

Anyone enjoy Jack Benny and George and Gracie?  I didn't like watching them on TV but when I heard the radio drama these comedies became part of my mainstream radio drama listening.

The local Vancouver classic rock station plays The Whistler on Sunday evenings. It's one of those heavily moralizing radio plays (think Twilight Zone meets an after-school special) from the 1940s, but it's funny, almost tongue-in-cheek stuff (with a cruel sense of irony cribbed from O. Henry), and I love listening to the FDR-Truman era American accents.

All good stuff.
Check out Blue Beetle, Philip Marlowe and Jungle Jim too.

One that I forgot to mention is Night Beat with Frank Lovejoy as Randy Stone

Here's a pretty good source for downloading old time radio shows for free - they have a really good selection! (Definitely check out The Orson Welles Collection section at the bottom of the page)

(Zuludelta, if you read this, they've got 420 episodes of The Whistler!)

One bit of interesting trivia: Have Gun Will Travel took the reverse route and became a radio show after being a tv show. On the radio version, Paladin was played by John Dehner, probably best known from the "Mr. Garrity and the Graves" episode of The Twilight Zone and as Colonel Backscheider on a few episodes of Hogan's Heroes. (He also played the boss on The Doris Day Show in the early 70s, and did another radio western called The Frontier Gentleman)

Have Gun Will Travel and Frontier Gentleman were never big hits with me.  I think Jimmy Steward did a much better job of it in The Six Shooter.

Man, I loooove old radio dramas. Paticularly mystery and horror. I had this uncle (well still have) who collected them. He had tons of casettes, in these huge drawers. I would always sit around and listen to them, late at night. Not to mention that, whenever my family made a trip down there, we'd stop in at least one gas station to buy these tapes of more recent, at the time, Canadian produced shows. I think quite a few were of Ray Bradbury stories. Nightfall was a big favourite during this time.

I'm tempted now to mention Live365. Great site, although don't forget your username because it's impossible to find it out later. Or at least, last time I was on it. It has a number of good stations for radio dramas.

And I have to thank you for Wormwood. I'm hooked!

No problem UM, Glad you enjoy. A word of warning- I'd been listening before bed.  As of episode 10-11 that really becomes a BAD idea.

GM, THANKS for that link. that is an amazing collection!

has anyone seen loius l'amour theatre?
and some tech help.  how would i go about putting these on a dvdr so i can use them with my car cd player?
thanks!

UnkoMan

Your car cd player can play dvds?

If not, I know that if it plays mp3s you can just burn a data disk on a cdr. Most of these type even allow you to place files in different folders, so you can skip "albums." That way you could store different shows in their own folder, skip to the show, then skip to the episode.

I put a bunch on CD to liten to at work (I know people wondered what I was listening to that was so fnny. The Shadow knows). I think that nearly all The Shadow episodes in existence fit on two CDs.

Just wanted to let y'all know that Wormwood season 2 has started.
