...but my son's Scoutmaster is friends with old school comics writer Elliot S! Maggin and he came to speak to the Scout troop tonight. In truth the Scoutmaster invited him  for me because a few weeks ago he told me he knew a guy who "used to write Superman comics" and I immediately said "Is it Elliot Maggin?" Back in the late 70's I was a voracious DC comics reader (kinda still am I suppose) and knew Elliot S! Maggin and fellow writer Cary Bates names and work intimately.

Anyway, it was very pleasant to have a personal conversation with someone whose work was a huge influence on me when I was my son's age. Most comics guys I've met before got big in the 80's or 90's, so meeting someone from the '70's was pretty neat.

I'm just sayin'.

Hey Ren, that's awesome! Elliot S! Maggin is my favorite Superman author, the archetype by which I measure the others. I didn't read his stuff much as a kid (I wasn't smart enough to look for particular authors and I think I missed some of his run), but I have read many of his stories since and he is a real talent. And, his two Superman novels showed me (and anyone else who read them) that the Silver-Age Superman could be written in an intelligent, consistent fashion. I think Maggin's take on Lex Luthor in those novels is still the best the character has ever had. I still keep an eye out for his stuff.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I am thrilled by proxy.  :D

That does sound cool!  I have no idea who he is, never really read DC when I was into comics, but it's great when we have these little brushes with folks we admire.

The only thing I've read by him was the Kingdom Come novelization, which was actually really good. :)
