Joel Schumacher Eyeing Neil Gaiman's Sandman!       PDF        Print        E-mail

The IESB had the opportunity to speak with veteran director Joel Schumacher during the press junket for The Number 23 today in Los Angeles. Amongst the many things that I had to ask Joel big on my list was what other comic book character he would like to tackle? The response - Neil Gaiman's Sandman!

ImageThe possibility of a big screen live action feature film of Sandman has been talked about by many filmmakers, but for the past few years, it has become almost like the Holy Grail of comic book movie adaptations, unattainable.

Alan Moore's Watchmen was facing a very similar problem for many years until recently. It is currently in development with Zack Snyder (300) at the helm.

Trying to turn a seventy-five issue opus into a two-hour film is almost an impossible task.

Last year during the San Diego Comic Con, Neil Gaiman told his fans, "I'd rather no Sandman movie got made than [to have] a bad Sandman movie."

That brings me to what Schumacher told me today. He would like to do a Sandman movie...but can he get it right?

What do we have to do to get Schumachers slimy little hands off of this?

thanoson

I've dispatched 2 F-16's to his house. No worries.

stumpy

A couple year's worth of writing and casting delays might do the trick.

BTW, is this actually at all in the works, or was it just his answer to a hypothetical question?

wickerman

Hopefully his desire to do sandman is about as probable as my desire to be Jessica Alba's sex slave....

[whimper]  Say it ain't so, boys!  Say it ain't so!

Talavar

Don't get too worried; this was just idle speculation on Schumaker's part.

Mr. Hamrick

to reinterate what Talavar said, and we can quote this directly from Neil's mouth:
QuoteI remember about eight years ago the then Warner Brothers co-studio head Billy Gerber told me that he got weekly calls from people who wanted to make, direct or star in a Sandman film. "On Wednesday," he said, "Michael Jackson called about it." Given the comments some months ago from Alan Horn and Jeff Robinoff, who now run Warner Brothers, I don't believe the calls from people who want to make Sandman have decreased in the last eight years -- quite the reverse. Which I mention because I got a small deluge of letters from people asking me what I thought about Joel Shumacher saying in an interview that he'd love to direct a Sandman film and wondering if that meant that it was now about to happen, and of course it doesn't and it isn't. It simply puts Mr Schumacher in a very long line of people who want to make Sandman, some way ahead of Michael Jackson.

Another words, add Schumucker to the list of people who are dreaming about doing the film.

RTTingle

Whew... had me really worried there for a moment.

Wrong Sandman.

I have the perfect movie for Schumacher to do: A big-screen Babylon 5 movie.

Because if JMS can screw up the Spider-Man comics, I want someone to screw up his creations.  :P

Revenant

I'd rather be eviscerated and have my insides boiled, while someone jams bamboo into all my fingernails and toenails simultaneously, than watch a Joel Schumacher directed Sandman.

It would truly be a sign of the apocalypse.

It's not that bad!  At least with the movie you can have a couple of bears to numb the pain....boiled insides...i dunno.
