A note about releases

Tomato

Before I begin, I want to say that this is not intended toward anyone in particular nor to offend anyone for what is an innocent question, but is intended as a general statement to everyone before they add more useless and annoying posts to places where those posts ought not to be.

When a skinner decides you have suffered enough and/or has enough of a break to finish his real life and job, which, by the way, are more important then fictional realms, to get back to what is entirely a non-profit hobby, they will do so. If you fear they have forgotten to release one thing amist all the stuff they have done, PM them, but do not post your questions in forums dedicated to the showcasing of art.

You are not the our (including all skinners) boss, you are not our contractor. We do what we do because it is fun. Don't make it less so, ok?

Also, could a mod please sticky this?

Thanks for saying what a lot of us have thought. Or......whatever....

Well said Tomato.  Very sobering message.  Thanks...a little balance checking and dosing of RL from time to time is a good thing.   :)

Problem is, some people do not check their personal messages.

Once again you seem to have missed the point.

if an artist has no intention of releasing his or her work and has made this clear. you shouldnt pm them and harass them. you should respect there wishes and be done with it.

Ok, what is to come might come off as somewhat inflamatory depending on the mood of the person who reads it, but I want to say from the outset that if you do take it as inflamatory, it is meant to be forum wide. I especially do not mean to seem like I'm coming down on GG, for he is not now nor at the start of this, who my comments were specifically directed to (I will not say who it was meant toward, though it might be apparent  )

And, (since this might be another missunderstanding people have, and in fact I've gotten PMed on this by someone who was feeling guilty after reading my post despite being completely correct in how he handled his situation) I also wanted to make it clear that this is NOT a bash on those who request releases. I've gotten PMs in the past from those who were just curious about it, which reminded my lazy self to do what I should have done weeks before.

My comments were directed at certain members of the community who have been so impatient with us(the skinners) and how quickly we work on projects that they have, in effect, seen fit to declare themselves our unofficial overlords. This is most prevalent in the thread of our skinning overking Courtnall 6, where one individual posted a query as to when C6's skins would be released not FIVE POSTS DOWN from a post where C6 specifically states why they are not released yet and that they won't be just yet.

Again, this is not directed at those who are just curious about what's happening with the skins. If you'll look in my own thread, Lionheart asked me that question in my thread and I answered him. My problem merely has to do with the insensitivity of certain members, and the absurd ammount of spam that they are creating.

First, this is a particularly classy thread. Tomato, as others have said, thanks for taking up this issue, and handling the way you have.

Second, if I could offer a constructive suggestion: if a person is curious about whether or not a particular skin has been released, and the skinner in question has not made it clear as to when it might be relaesed in his showcase thread, the most appropriate forum venue to ask about the skin would be the Request forum.  A simple post to the effect of "Has Afghan Ant released his Copiel Thor skin?" may get the poster the inofrmation he/she desires without putting out the skinner or others.

That being said, two key considerations are good to keep in mind: care reading of the showcase thread for release info and patience.  No one should expect immediate gratification, and don't expect a courteous response if one is not taking the time make use of the information that is already posted.

As always, this is my opinion, for whatever that is worth...

Just to add to this, a few more general suggestions(I made reference to them kind of, but not specifically)

1- Check to see if the question has been answered already. If I say/a skinner says "I am not releasing it just yet" or "I'm waiting until Christmas break to finish up a few projects, at which point I will release everything" then there is no reason for you to post.

2- (This should apply to all requests in general, not just this) Be patient. As a rule, I'd say wait until your post is a page behind before you post again (eithor a page in an individual thread, or if that thread goes to the second page of the forum).

Figure Fan

I like this topic.

I've seen quite a few posts like, "When will they be released?" by members I've never seen before who are quite obviously just in it for the download. Those are the real 'eye roller' instances. At least take the time to tell the artist that you like/dislike their work and maybe give them some useful feedback before demanding a download location.

Sadly, no one has ever heckled me for a skin release but that is totally understandable since most of the stuff I've done was just for me or specific forum-goers.

I think a topic like this was due for posting. Just make sure to remember that making skins, especially a great number of skins is no simple task. Also, combine that with the chaos that is "RL" and you can get some delay-age.

Of course, I asked in part because of this thread.  :)

It's a good thread. I'll admit to being one who's asked on occasion, but usually after waiting for a while -- and after reading the whole thread (or pertinent parts if it's a long one) to see if the skinner/mesher has already commented about release timing. But never, ever in a whiny or demanding tone. As Tomato said, there are ways to inquire without coming across as pushy.

Patience is key. Being polite helps too.

Carravaggio

I have quite a few people PMing me asking when certain skins would be released. they usually preface this by asking how I am going, what my next project is and offering some sort of support or feedback. I never have a problems getting those PMs. Similarly I often have a few people asking in my skins thread on my release schedule, but these are from people who have commented on and/or supported my work. Similarly I have no issue with those people. They are polite and friendly, some of them I would consider friends. However I have seen what Tomato is talking about, and like Figure Fan i consider these to be real eye rolling moments. This topic needed to be made, thanks, Tomato.

Of course, one "solution" to this "problem" is simply to not preview stuff.
If it gets a picture posted  only when it's released, then nobody can badger people as to "when will it be released?".
It's what I do with 95% of my meshes, and when I DO preview stuff (Like the Elseworlds and Angel Mods), I immediately become a hostage to fortune. Had I NOT previewed them, they would have just quietly faded from my mind. As it is, now I feel guilty about not finishing them. So by previewing, I made a Rod For My Own Back.
Of course, all the polite, patient people won't get to see whats coming up if nobody previews, so it's no where near ideal.
But it is one way to go...

This is true but sometimes you want feedback on the work before you send it out there.

Sorry Tommy, I never meant to offend.  I'm just a fan who appreciates and looks forward to your work.

No, you haven't offended me.
So no apology needed.

When I am president I will subsidize the skinning community, but in the meantime I just exchange thanks for whatever is available.

As a user of the forum and not a contributor (yet),

I just want to say I've been blown away at the rate at which things are released.  Everyone that contributes has really impressed the hell out of me.

Cardmaster

Just wanted to pipe in with a "here here" (or is it "hear hear?"). Anyways. Just wanted to say well said and all counts guys

Yeah i am sick of people bugging me about releasing my skins...*whisper off stage*

It has come to my attention that no one does so...yeah.

But seriously speaking I think this is a great thread. I am started to notice a trend in our own members spamming the heck out of the forums. I am sorry if I have ever done this before ( I have a really bad memory so I don't know).

I hope this thread will stop some people from doing this more often.
