And you folks have been wondering why I have been so busy offline and not getting any stuff done here...

It's been a blurr of running errands, doing housework, remodeling the master walk-in closet, and trying to organize my DVD collection.. plus throw in making sure my wife and son realize I'm not missing either.

Then I get the news this morning that my grandfather, who is 90 years old and stubbern about reaching that age, just got one hell of a wake up call when some drunk driver decides to miss his turn at a T intersection and drives right into his bedroom. Really, I am serious. I can't imagine sleeping soundly and being shocked awake as one of the walls of your bedroom cave inwards and having a pair of headlights staring you in the face just mere feet from the bed you are sleeping in. He had a heck of a shock which caused him a stroke and ended with him bed ridden probably for the rest of his days on this planet.

So as I am typing this I'm running laundry and packing my family's stuff so we can spend time at the Lake House in Pennsylvania this weekend and probably spending one of those days at my grandparents helping out with things there.

Let's just hope that this event is the last bad event of a pretty good year thus far.  :banghead:

Oh, no!

I can't imagine what your grandfather, or you for that matter, has/ is going through right now. Good luck with everything, hope everything gets better, and I'll be thinking of you, your family, and your grandpa.

Toxic_J

Man, I'm sorry to hear about such an unfortunate event. I mean, what are the odds for such a thing to occur.... I hope you and your family will be spared any other shocking events like this.

AncientSpirit

That's outrageous!   Was the driver insured?  Is he picking up for all your grandfather's medical bills?

What a lawsuit!    I hate drivers who drive drunk!

BentonGrey

Drunk drivers...man, I HOPE that person will spend the rest of his days making up for what he's done to your grandfather.  I'm sorry to hear all about that CQ, our prayers will be with you and yours, my friend.

Thanks, I needed all of these nice comments... been a looooooong weekend.

The news is that the house damage wasn't quite a bad as I was told through the grapevine.. it was still pretty serious as far as foundation damage is concerned. I'm not sure how easy this will be to explain in words because it took my dad drawing a diagram to explain it to me. The truck jumped the curb at full speed, bounced on the yard a few times, and then hit the front corner of the house loud enough to sound like an explosion. My grandfather was sitting on the edge of the bed after he heard the sound of squeeling tires and yelled in horror as the corner of his bedroom exploded into a dust cloud and debris (which thankfully never flew in his direction). The truck hit hard enough to bend the entire front of it into a V shape around the corner of the brick house. The impact shifted that side of the house 3 inches off it's foundation and cracked the cement basement into a spider-web pattern as well. The driver survived the crash but broke both her legs, cracked her hip, fractured six ribs, busted her right hand, and had a mild concussion. And the amusing part was that she borrowed her son's truck and had to explain to him what happened while being put into the back of the ambulence.

I'm told it was a heck of a wild night and more then unexpected for a small surburbian town in the middle of Pennsylvania. It should take more then 6 months to repair the damage to the house but I can give my grandfather credit when he built that house 50+ years ago it withstood everything up until that truck hit it. I'm uber impressed that both are still planning on sticking around after some patching up. Heck his humor was intact too, "I'm not leaving this house unless it's feet first and it almost happened. Too bad that I'm as stubbern as this house to let a car bring us down."

Otherwise it was just a nice quiet weekend at the lake house until we came home tonight.

Your grandfather sounds like a heckuva guy.  I might have to take lessons in stubborn from him.  ;)

Hope the cost of all the house repairs stays under $100k, as that's usually the cap on Property Damage....anything over that the driver has to pay out of pocket, and if they don't have that kind of extra cash, you may have trouble getting it paid off (no experience, just an educated guess).  Any idea if they're just planning on patching the basement walls?  If so, without any kind of serious sealant injected into the cracks, that's a basement leak waiting to happen.  Once that starts, it's just more of a pain in the butt to deal with.  Dunno what can be done about the wall shifted off the foundation.....will they need to rebuild part of it completely, or just patch up the hole?

Glitch Girl

Geez, what an adventure.  I'm glad he's handling it well and I hope the home repairs aren't too expensive, get repaired quickly, and don't involve a lot of footdragging from the insurance company.

I just got the news earlier today after I got my son home from a field trip... My grandfather passed on in his sleep last night.

With his health and memory kinda coming and going I pretty much made my peace with his eventual passing (he only had a year or so left at best) and then having the whole car crashing into the house thing just shock the whole process into fast forward kinda took me be surprise.

I was planning on spending the weekend with my in-laws at the farm so that is still going on as planned... but I guess that I have a sort of funeral to be part of in the near future since he planned on being cremated.

Wow... Things are just happening too fast this year.

Alaric

Sorry to hear that. No matter how prepared you think you are, that kind of thing is never easy.

Intensity

I'm so sorry CQ-  you and your family are in my prayers.

Kev

The Hitman

Man, I'm really sorry to hear that. I was pulling for him. You all are in my prayers.

Spam

Dude, I hope you'll be okay, especially after all the stuff that's happened. A loss in the family is always sad. So, I hope you'll be okay, and that life will return to normal for you.

Take care, man.

FLASH_22798

I'm truely sorry for your loss CQ.   You and yours will defenitely be in my thoughts.

Uncle Yuan

My condolences to you and all your family.  If there is anything we, your electronic family, can do, don't hesitate to ask.  (A virtual casserole, perhaps?)

El Condor

What a year.  My prayers are with you, amigo.

Reepicheep

Really sorry to hear this. Bad news since the beginning there.

He did sound like a pretty neat guy. To live 'till 90 is pretty good going too. Maybe he's glad there was a bit of adventure there at the end of his life?

Sounds intense for you, though. My prayers and condolences for you and your family. I wish there was more I could do, really...

The Pwime

man, I'm sorry to hear all this, CQ.  I hope things brighten up soon.  :(

I'm really sorry to hear that CQ.  I thought he was okay.  Still it sounds like he went peacefully, and that's a good way to go after a good life.
