Hey guys, this is my very first mesh/skin. Tell me how I did and what needs to be improved on. It's Wildcat II btw.

murs47

wow! that's your first skin? that's incredible!

congratulations, and I hope to see more from you.....crazy thing is, you'll only get better with time.

p.s. nice avatar and banner by the way

Very Nice   A few of us have been waiting for that skin, too.  Well done!  A few of the experts can be very helpful with some tips, but it looks great especially for your first, as Murs pointed out.

Jakew

That's rad! I like the eye-glow. What keyframes does it use?

YokoBeast

Thanks for the many complements guys. As for the keyframe, I'm not sure what to use. I've tried to use the keyframe from tommyboy's tigra mesh since her catlike movements and tail movements match that of WC2, but I can't seem to get it to work. Thanks again guys, and I'm looking forward to continuing contributing.

Podmark

That's a great job for a first skin. Do you have Ink's Beast mesh? The face hair on that mesh might be of use to you.

YokoBeast

Thanks. Which one of his beast? He has a lot. I have the first one on his downloading list.

just curious did you use any other peoples skin, it looks a lot like c6's beast's fur

YokoBeast

I used the chest hair and a little on the back from what I believe is c6 beast. I also edited his face, such as his eyes which I'm currently on and I gave it teeth. The facial hair was used from beast. However, I'm currently working on making the hair more detailed and adding/looking for something that is close to a mane.

then thats going to be a problem, basically what you did was called kittbashing(using some one else's work on your skins) which is a big no no on these boards

vamp

Yeah. Thats a thing people around here are to keen on. But don't worry, just be happy someone called you on it before you released it. That could've got real messy. It's not like we despise kittbashers, just kittbashing. Just try not to do it again.

YokoBeast

Hey sorry, I didn't mean to cause any problems. I'm really new at this and wasn't aware that what I was doing was wrong. I've scrapped the skin and will see where to go from here. Once again, sorry for any problems I may have inadvertently caused.

I'm not a skinner, mesher, or any other kind of artist on these boards, but I'm sure that you will be forgiven since you obviously didn't know anything about kittbashing (which is a definate no-no).  I've seen these guys when they're REALLY upset, and this was not one of those times.  The artists are actually quite nice, and will go WAY out of their way for if you ask nicely.  They do what they do for free, and just hate when someone steals their work.  I think they were just trying to gently tell you what kittbashing is, and never do it again.  I'm by no means trying to speak for the artists on these boards - they are the heart and soul.  I am just trying to let you know try not to take it personally as I don't feel the comments were meant to be personal.  You're obviously talented, and I hope you don't let this discourage you.

The best thing you can do is ask permission to kitbash a person's skin. The worst that can happen is that they say no. If they do say no, you can just make a request in the request thread for the desired skin.

You made an honest mistake, don't let it scare you away from the community. I encourage you to take another stab at the new Wildcat. Even if it doesn't turn out as well as you liked, you'll only get better with time and practice.

Nah, right now two things are going on. You've got an oportunity to try a little skinning and you can also have somebody skin your mesh for you. That's one of the nice things of this forum... plenty of support for people trying something new and plenty of people willing to do a skin to see a mesh released. Consider that for this and future releases, or just slap together a 'placeholder' skin (a base skin with some filters on it and some nudging) and release it for others to skin on top of.

I know my earliest works where kitbash heavy and while nobody noticed once I learned about the rule I went back and re-did a bunch of them.

Forgive me if this seems rude, but did you make that mesh in 3dsMax?
Or is it a NifSkope of pre-existing meshes?
If its the latter then it really isn't "your" mesh, it's your Nifskope of someone elses meshes.
It's perhaps a tedious distinction, but one worth making, like the distinction between an original skin and a kitbashed one.
Your first post states that its "my very first mesh/skin".
But the whiskers and tail and claws look a lot like my parts from my _tv meshes.
If the parts come from my meshes I have no problem with you NifSkoping them, but I would like credit for having made the pieces, rather than your assertion that it's "your" mesh.
If you DID make the mesh in 3dsMax (and didn't re-use anyone elses geometry via "import"), then well done and my apologies.

As to the mesh/skin itself, I'd go with a more "cat-faced" mesh, as the new Wildcat seems to have a more feline look.

I post this not to discourage you from further efforts, but rather to spare you potential problems if you are reusing the meshes of others in the way that you seem to be reusing skins.
I understand that you are new to this, and may not know or understand all the "rules" and conventions, so please don't take this as a personal attack.

YokoBeast

Yes, I did nifskope the mesh, using ur wildcat whiskers and feet claws, tigra tail, and C6 hand claws. I think thats all. I do believe that I did say something about your tigra. But unfortunately, I have forgotten to give credit, which is a mistake I should of never made. So I give my greatest apologies to you and anyone I have offended. Thanks for the tips on how to make wildcat II better. I will probably proceed in remaking wildcat II and definitely give credit to where it's due.

I'm glad to hear your still going to skin - I and I'm sure some others look forward to seeing your work.

murs47

It's good to hear you're going to give this another shot, can't wait to see it.
