Just wondering if anyone else has read Soon I Will Be Invincible, by Aaron Grossman. It's a novel set in a superhero universe, told in alternating chapters from the point of view of Doctor Impossible (evil genius), and Fatale (cyborg superhero). The UK hardcover has a cover by Bryan Hitch, along with several colour plates in the back of the covers of the Champions (not the Marvel team) comic book.

So far, it's pretty cool. Unlike Minister Faust's From the Notebooks of Dr. Brain it's more straight superhero action than paraody, but it intermingles real-world sensibilities with the cliches of superhero comics really nicely. The author is aware of the absurdities of the genre, but writes them with enough respect that they don't seem ridiculous, while at the same time having a little fun with them. Grossman creates characters that play off the classic archetypes without being overly familiar, and weaves a plot that more than once has you rooting for the bad guy. Well worth checking out.

There's a neat website for the book too, http://sooniwillbeinvincible.com/, with a database for the Department of Metahuman Affairs, and a test to see if you're Champions Reserve Force material, or suffering from Malign Hypercognition Disorder...

So far the reviews have been great and the interviews have held my attention. I cant wait to actually go out and pick up a copy for myself.

The Hitman

I have it on hold for me at the bookstore. Can't wait to free up some cash to pick it up.
