Where did you get your information?

The only thing I've seen so far is a resolution to the mess. Posted over on the John Byrne board (probably other places as well).

Yeah, I've not heard anything about Golden no longer doing commissions, either. Just seen the resolution posted by either Gerry or Renee at a few different places. And they mentioned something about meeting at another con (Baltimore, I think), so I doubt he's quitting taking commissions.

It looks like the problem may be that Michael Golden puts cons before commissions, because Renee's response looks like she and Mr. Golden did lie a bit, but that it was unintentional.

However, if you think about it, Golden either needs to quit doing commissions or change his business practices for his own sake. Not being paid up front would save him a lot of grief and headaches, and frankly I think he overcharges for his sketches (haven't seen any of the $2k artwork to judge).

Larry Hama mentioned it on the Newsarama board, I believe. Here's the thread, the exact quote should be in there somewhere:

EDIT: I'm feeling extra nice tonight: "I'm not the one parceling blame here. So, who is less objective?
Michael Golden has quit doing commissions. He never needed to do them in the first place. If this were a "professional" transaction, Mr. Golden would be selling first print rights only, and get back his original, which he could then sell for quite another sum of money. He probably loses money doing the commissions. They are, in many ways a "favor" to fans, and it is understandable that one might become aggravated if one is pressured during such an action. If you want to read what is there as in insult, that's your problem. Also, judging the "quality" and relative value of artwork is a highly subjective thing. My offer still stands."

Yeah, that's Larry Hama's words though...he seems to be speaking in favor of Golden, not for him. Reading his posts, you can tell he's getting a little too emotionally involved in the argument. Just as people on the John Byrne forum are as well. It sounds like things will be worked out now. Like GM mentioned..they are all going to meet at a convention (wherein Golden will bite one of their ears off...j/k!)...and I can't imagine Golden not taking on some commissions while he is there.

I'm just wondering how long till this debacle gets a back spin and some artist starts offering commissions where he berates the fan.

Yeah well, Hama and Golden are pretty tight, I think, probably owing to the fact that Hama used to be the editor on The 'Nam (where Golden probably gained most of his fame as a comic book artist). I'm guessing Hama feels more than a little emotionally invested in the creative team that worked on The 'Nam since it was probably a more personal project to him and writer Doug Murray (they were both Vietnam war vets) than most anything else they worked on in the 1980s. I'm actually surprised to see Hama weighing in on the whole thing, on a notoriously public forum like Newsarama no less... I was always under the impression that he's been a very private individual since he sort of dropped out of the monthly Marvel Comics grind... the very few interviews you can find of him online have always been real brief, almost brusque, affairs.

Now that I think about it, the Dr. Strange piece Golden made has probably increased in value because of all the controversy surrounding it. How's that for irony?

That artist sucks!!!! He forged his agents signature cus he know she wouldn't aprove. and then he didn't address the fact he spelled what Dr. Strange was saying wrong!
