I recently had to use the recovery function of my PC. After doing this, I noticed that when I go into my character files the NIF files are displayed differently. This renders my NIFconverter useless. Can someone please explain?

Could you be more descriptive than "the NIF files are displayed differently"?  What do they look like now?  Are you able to post a screen capture?  Are you referring to the file icons or the rendered NIFs themselves?  If the latter, are you using CTool, CTool2, NIFSkope, or one of the games (or some combination of these 3D rendering devices)?  If the former, what does the NIF icon resemble?  If you restored your system to a point before you installed programmes such as NIFSkope, it is possible that your system no longer associates the file extension with the programme because NIFSkope needs to be reinstalled.  Otherwise, we could be talking about a hardware driver (specifically video) issue.  If you could share more information, someone may be able to help you out.

I will be more descriptive to the best of my ability. At one point and time, The NIFs showed up as rendered NIFs. Yes, I did take my Pc back to a time before I had NIFviewer installed. The characters stiil show up in Character Tool, though. What I gather from the information you gave me, there is a program(s) that  I need to re-install. It's been awhile and I have forgotten the website(s) that I originally got them from. Thanks for your help and  patience.

I would try reinstalling NIFSkope first, but I am still not sure I understand the nature of the problem you are having.  If you are accustomed to simply double-clicking on the NIF files and having them open in a program that automatically renders them, you need to reinstall NIFSkope.  If the NIFs render correctly in CTool but not in-game, then you may be dealing with a video driver or hardware compatibility problem.
