Since i finished the Map Pack Conversions, and I cant skin for the life of me, and can only model fairly simple stuff, I started thinking, what projects could I dabble on? Yes More maps  :P
Actually, it's more of a proof of concept that I can build one from scratch. Don't know how far i will get with it. If anyone has any ideas for maps they'd like to see or that are missing from the game, post the ideas here, I do better when I have a focused goal as opposed to flailing around mindlessly.... They might actually even get made one day.

Anyway, here are a couple of partial Tests I was working on.

This is a BIG city map with four city sections (well, there WILL be four) divided by a river and a bridge

This was testing the concept of a catwalk level (like a power plant etc..) where walkable platforms hung over walkable terrain

Previsionary

cool, ffvttr is lacking in terrains and that was a shame. The game, in general, needs larger maps outside of cities. I'd love to see perhaps an medium/large FFVTTR desert map or even a wild-life/jungle map. But what really springs to mind is perhaps a space station/outer space map. Or, how about a map with a giant pit somewhere on it. Yes...giant pit.  ;)

A barren landscape destroyed by war and littered with rubble and such would be cool as well. Maybe an underwater or thanagarian map so Benton can stop asking about it. GAH! :P

And finally, perhaps some alienish/extra dimension maps such as Polemachus (Arkon's world), the skrull planet, or even the places the LoS visit. Yeah, I'm kinda full of ideas and I don't know how many of these are do-able.

Mystik

willing to help if needed, since a few things prev mentioned I'm already started

QuoteYeah, I'm kinda full of ideas...

Slow down there Tex. You're gonna pull something!
And I'm gonna make it official: we have one vote for "Giant Pit"

QuoteMaybe an underwater or thanagarian map so Benton can stop asking about it. GAH!

I actually whipped together a quickly hacked underwater map for him a few weeks ago.
Don't know if he's gonna use it or not.
I figured if he did, It would be a nice bonus for the DCU Mod, if he didn't I'd eventually throw it out there for those that want it.

Cool.
You can PM me with any ideas you had or things you've already worked out. I'd be curious to hear.

This is tantalizing...

Dammit! When will I find the time to take advantage of all this wonderful stuff you and the others are doing!

Question, Goggles: Are you using 3ds max to design these levels or Blender?  The Level Layout 3ds max macroscript provided by IG would make exporting extents and defining the terrain infinitely easier than using NIFSkope to copy and paste terrain tags (and it's not clear to me how you might come across the terrain's extents without the macroscript, but I am hoping you will share your methods here :)).  Good show for developing some new terrains!

Definitely more space maps ... space station, alien planet, etc.

Also, more Wild West maps.

Renegade

Your first one reminds me of an idea I had to have a river and bridge setup like you have, with old FF style buildings on one side to represent the Old Town part of Patriot City and FFVTTR buildings on the other for the new gentrified part of town.

Valandar

There's a problem with walkable catwalks over walkable terrain - it won't work in FF.

See, when the engine creates the "walk paths", it effectively "drapes" a grid from the top over the terrain. Which means that if you tried to walk under the catwalks, your character would either jump onto the catwalk and then down again, or stand there beside the catwalk if it can't jump high enough.

how about(mentioned before)since your asking a training room map.a big concrete or steel room with shields/barriers scattered through out.maybe throw in the old clone ray that randomly fires stun bolts?

Lunarman

What about FFVTTR Val?

Do you know if it works there? If not, then you could export the catwalk as an object and place it in the map. Certain tags will make it walkable on.

A map idea I've been kicking around is an interior office building. A few different floor plans could be made. Using the magic demonstrated in Patriot City free roam, a stairway could lead you up or down to the next floor.
Would wall destructibility present an issue, I wonder?

Yes, unless you made a special "wall section" object that was destruructable, then built all the interior walls out of that destructable object.

Re: catwalks. Even if the "walking under bridges" issue can't be resolved, it would still be cool to have some sort of warehouse/facory/prison interior with a walkway around the edges.

Goggles........you're completely freakin' awesome.

No, it doesn't work in FFvTTR either, even if you make it an object.  I'm afraid that multi level walk paths are simply impossible in the engine of either game.

As HumonTon suggested, a destructable wall section would be really cool.

kutz

Wow.  Very cool layouts.  I've been dying for new arenas to throw down in.

RE catwalks:

How about a space station made up of platforms/modules connected by catwalks?  The catwalks would extend over an abyss (similar to the skyscraper map in FF1) so you wouldn't have to worry about walking under them.  Think Marvin the Martian's lab from the "blow-up-the-Earth-with-the-Uranium-Pu-36-Explosive-Space-Modulator" old school Bugs Bunny episodes.

O.K. so maybe you're not that old, but I think you get the idea...

lmalonsof

Hey Goggles, do you have any news from this project? I'm extremely interested on it!!!

GogglesPizanno

It got a bit sidetracked due to lack of time, and the horrible realization that Val was right about the multilevel  maps and how the path finding works. So I took a step back and am rethinking some creative ways to accomplish what I was after...

I'm still working on ideas, its just slow going....
