So Trent Reznor since breaking with the record companies has been living up to his promise.
He released a new album this weekend. Its a 2CD, 36 track instrumental thing.

You can get the first 9 tracks for free via bittorrent.
- $5 get you the full album DRM free in MP3, FLAC etc...
- $10 gets you the download + CD's
- then there are some high priced Blue Ray and LP offerings as well.

Whats really cool is in addition to being DRM free, its also released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license.

The servers are being hammered and the downloads are being flaky now due to traffic... but hey...

I'm a big NiN fan who hasn't been keeping up with Trent recently. Gotta say that I was interested in this until I read "instrumental".

Aye, same. He does do very good instrumentals, but I much prefer his lyrical stuff.

His instrumentals are great but I too prefer to hear what he has to say.

Man, they make like twenty albums a year!

I like NIN but I definitely don't want an instrumental joint.

GogglesPizanno

I love the instrumental stuff... Plus $5 for two cd's worth of DRM free music that goes right to the artist?
I think its worth the money just to support the distribution model.

Edit: Crap, that didn't work either.

Bah. Can't get the download to work. :(

Protomorph

I like Trent to sing his songs too. He tries to get too pretty with instrumental work.

That said, I'll probably still get it. I have everything else by him.

Yay. My friend sent me the MP3s (it's not piracy-- I paid for the album this morning. Besides, they're Creative Commons.)

Listening now. It starts a little slow. I'm assuming it'll pick up a bit. ;)

captainspud

Short review: 1 and 2 are a little slow, 3 and 4 are much better. :)

If anybody paid for it and hasn't been able to download it, PM me a screenshot of your e-mailed receipt (blank out your sensitive bits if you want) and I'll link you to the MP3s.

This is why I think supporting his distribution method is good. We need more of this kind of thing...

And I had the same problem with the downloads and went to other means as well.
According to the tech support, they are expecting server capacity to meet demand by tomorrow morning.

Heh... I was having trouble remembering which songs I liked and disliked (stupid lack of titles...), so for the first time I used the iTunes "rating" column to keep track of the gold and the stinkers. :)

So, yeah. It starts out kinda average, it's slow through the high teens, and then it gets much, much better in the last two parts. There are of course standouts on both ends-- good songs amid the crap, and a sudden dirge amid the heavy stuff at the end. The low ratings are generally for songs that are just too quiet and boring, or for songs where he gets too heavy into his "radio static as musical instrument" stuff which is just annoying when overused. Lyrics really would've helped some of the slower songs. But hey-- for thirteen cents a song, you really can't argue. :D

UnfluffyBunny

downloading now, i'd prefer something with lyrics in all honesty, but i'm not gonna pass up a $5 NIN album

Glitch Girl

Gonna have to give this a check this weekend. Been looking for some new music lately.  Can't beat the price.

Protomorph

I may try to sync it up with some of the acapella Black Album from Jay-Z.
