If you look at movies like Superman and Ang Lee's The Hulk, people are way too overly critical of them, depsite the fact that they're made with a lot of love and throw decades old heroes into new situations.

I don't think people are criticizing the movies for having fight scenes or action. No one is against that. It's the other things these movies lack or do poorly that inspire criticism.

Check out the message boards at imdb.com ... I think they represent a fair proportion of the general movie-going public who aren't avid comic-readers. The boards are littered with numerous posts on how "boring" the recent Superman and the Ang Lee Hulk were. Lots of "Hulk Dogs? WTF?" posts etc. "Blade", on the other hand, is the bee's knees.

I really think if Ang Lee had finished with a straight-up slugfest with a "traditional" Absorbing Man, the general public would have been a lot kinder to the film. Likewise, Superman. If he had thrown the Kryptonite planet into space THEN had a fight with, I dunno, Luthor in his power-armour, we'd be seeing the sequel this year.

Umm, we are talking about different things. Or, at least I was talking about the people in this thread. The people here aren't criticizing Superman Returns all that much because it has too little action and they don't seem especially worried that the next one will have too much. Personally, I would be fine if it had more action, but that's not my complaint. Other issues with the characterization and storyline - some mentioned above - are the issues I think people are on about in this thread and those issues are what I'd like to see avoided/fixed in the next movie.

I have confidence that they can put more action in the film, but I worry about dealing with Jason, with letting bad characterizations for Clark slip in, Superman as a stalker, Luthor's campiness, and some other things. I think in Superman Returns, they didn't concentrate on action because they thought they had to re-establish the characters for the audience. I happen to think there isn't much need for that (this is Superman, after all), but I can at least see the reasoning. But, as an example, having Clark be such a bumbler that he doesn't even bother investigating the source of the power outage is just stupid. (That's sort of a minor nit, maybe, but I don't to want to get too spoilery with major plot points.) I'm not sure why that was in the movie, but it's that kind of writing that worries me and I think others in this thread have expressed similar concerns.

Anyway, I don't want to be totally negative because parts of Superman Returns were okay. But, it was a missed opportunity, IMO, and I'd hate to see the franchise slide further down that path with mediocre sequels.

I was talking about the majority of movie-goers. I think the people on this board are a little more discerning in their criticism when it comes to comic-movies   :D

The first Blade WAS incredible.
and Hulk Dogs??? WTF?
i think if anybody COULDN'T make those judgement calls, then well, theres the real problem.

I really doubt Norton wants an all out slug-fest for the hulk.

as for a sequel for superman returns...let this supposed body count start with the kid.

Don't worry, I'm sure some script writer will eventually figure out that a little bit of gold Kryptonite will take care of that loose end, and then he'll most likely never be mentioned again.

Or the Green Goblin kidnaps the kid and the rest of the world forgets the child ever existed including the parents. If they really want to go all out they can Joe Q write the story and Clark will be back to mooning over Lana. XD
