Shipwreck?  I love Dwayne Johnson, but he's no Shipwreck.  I would have probably chosen a smaller hispanic actor for Hector Delgado.
Gung Ho is supposed to be a big mean cajun mofo.  Brendon Fraser is not.  He is going to need to pull off a miracle.

Those are very bad ideas......although I like both actors well enough, they are completely wrong for their parts.  They need a really big guy for Gung Ho.

the_ultimate_evil

they are both small cameos, think x-men style cameos

read this on another board from a guy who claims to have been at the panel at toyfair so take it with a pinch of salt
The black armored suits are based on the Sigma Six designs. They are used for a specific battle in the film.

As for the "standard" costumes:
Duke's costume is supposedly a cross between classic and Valor vs. Venom
Ripcord has some pretty standard military gear (much like the original toy)
Scarlett's main costume is said to be very much like her Valor vs. Venom attire.
There was a picture leaked with some early sculpts of masks and armor for the film. You can see concept art (although tiny and blurry) pinned up in the background which pretty much confirms this.

There are two types of Vipers. One type is supposed to look just like the classic, the other is said to resemble the VvV Neo-Vipers.

Cobra Commander's armor was supposedly the most drastic departure with a faceplate like a stylized skull. A rough sculpt of a skull-like face plate can be seen in the leaked photo. I'm not too keen on that, but if he doesn't wear the hood at some point I'd be shocked.

Baroness's costume is very faithful to the original design. It looks to me like she has a black cobra emblem on her chest. I do agree with everyone about the glasses though. The shades are cool but she needs some regular specs reminiscent of the old toy.

Storm Shadow's look is pulled straight out of the G.I.Joe Reloaded comics. I like the design, but if he doesn't wear the ninja gear at some point I would be both surprised and extremely disappointed.
if that means anything to anyone i'm not a joe fan

Apparently, Shipwreck was cut from the movie, so no Dwayne Johnson.

Well that sucks!  Shipwreck was my favorite in the cartoon.

Ya he was a great character in the cartoon, but you gotta admit its prolly better to not have the Rock play him.

Now that i think about it, i think my all-time favorit episode might have been the one where shipwreck has amnesia and cobra has him fooled that he is a normal guy living this normal life with all his joe friends (who are seemingly normal but are cobra agents in disguise).  That one was classic, that and the V(w)iper episode.

Talking about the characters that didn't make the cut for the movie has me wondering about the reasons for the producers/writers doing so. Stalker, for instance, has the problematic code-name (although for purposes of ethnicity/appearance and being a central character in the GI Joe origin, it looks like Marlon Wayans' "Ripcord" is basically "Stalker" in the film). I still have no idea why they went with "Heavy-Duty" (a 1990s GI Joe character) instead of "Roadblock," except to think that maybe they wanted to get away from the goofy, rhyming cartoon version of Roadblock. Also, Heavy-Duty was a prominent character in the later GI Joe cartoon (Sigma Six), so this might be an attempt to rope in younger viewers. They didn't go with Flint because it would have probably looked redundant having two officers on the team (they already have Hawk). And without Flint, there's really no need for Lady Jaye (they already have Scarlett as their female intelligence agent, and if they stay true to the comics, there'll be enough romantic tension with the Snake-Eyes/Scarlett angle without throwing in the Flint/Lady Jaye relationship).

Pointless speculation on why some other early/prominent Joes didn't make the movie roster:

Beach Head: Problematic name. Sounds like something you get on your honeymoon
Blowtorch: Why Hasbro made a toy of a soldier that uses a flamethrower to burn people alive is beyond me. I'm glad he (and a similar character, Charbroil) didn't make the movie roster. The US Department of Defense pretty much outlawed the use of the flamethrower in combat in 1978 (in part, a reaction to all the bad publicity the military got in the Vietnam War, particularly with the My Lai Massacre).
Rock & Roll: Pretty redundant, the movie already has a big, beefy guy who handles all the big weapons.
Sgt. Slaughter: Too goofy. Besides, I don't think Hasbro has the rights to the character anymore.
Wild Bill: Much like Shipwreck and Sgt. Slaughter, he's too much of a caricature to work in a film that leans towards an arbitrary "faux-realism."
Quick-Kick: See Wild Bill above.
Any of the environment-specific Joes (Snow-Job, Dusty, Alpine, Iceberg): Unless the whole film were to be shot in the Arctic, I can't see the directors wasting a roster spot on Snow-Job or Iceberg. Ditto with a desert location and Dusty or a mountain location and Alpine.

Or Snow Job, if you go to Alaska.

But Shipwreck was the best character and he had a parrot!

Sgt. Slaughter is a real person.  A retired professional wresler.

I know.

The fact that he's a "real person" (depending on how much stock you want to put in his wrestling persona being the genuine person) doesn't make the character of Sgt. Slaughter any less of a caricature though.

And don't forget, he went to battle armed only with what looked like a breech-loading, 17th century flintlock pistol.

Mr. Hamrick

Well, Sgt. Slaughter is a character that was played by Robert Remus.  But being that the character was a public persona for him (and remains so to this day on WWE TV as he is not 100% retired) then it would not make sense nor likely be possible for the character to be used in a live action movie.  The only way I could see such a thing happening is if a "new Sgt. Slaughter" debuted in the WWE with Remus's blessing (and perhaps Remus as a manager) and then crossed over to the the film.  I don't see that happening, though, especially with the amount of pro-troops stuff that John Cena already uses in his gimmick.  It's be a bit redundant.  On the flip slide of that, I would not blame Vince for doing it given the annual trip to Iraq that the WWE does to entertain the troops.  Ok, I am off my soapbox now.

I think Shipwreck should be saved for a future film along with some of the other Joe characters.

The cool thing someone pointed out (besides her look): She's got blood makeup!  That means unlike the cartoon, these guys can get hurt. :D

Where was the address of concerns for Michael Bay presents Shia LeBuff?*

*A movie which I did enjoy, but still had concerns about!

I really hope so. In fact, I'm already hoping Ripcord gets killed in the movie (Because Marlon Wayans sucks, I don't like what I'm hearing about how the character is going to be used, and they could have just as easily used a Joe who was already African-American....as well as actually popular, like Stalker or Roadblock....instead of changing Ripcord's race).

Here's hoping they use Steeler, Breaker, Clutch, Stalker, Lady Jaye, Flint, Roadblock or Rock N' Roll (no need for two machine gunners, really), and Tunnel Rat * in a sequel.....and NEVER use Serpentor, unless the plot of a movie involves the Joes stopping Cobra from actually creating him. Serpentor sucks.

*
Larry Hama's cameo could very easily turn out to be a disguised Tunnel Rat - ie, Hama not actually playing the character, but Hama's face being a disguise - but I doubt they'll go that way.
