I went to my comics shop yesterday and didn't have anything come in, so I just picked up a couple comics and the current Previews before heading out. One of the comics was Civil War: The Return. (The other was a Byrne-era issue of Fantastic Four I got from the cover price back issue boxes) And it is the ONLY Civil War book I've picked up, or plan to pick up, outside the tie-in issues from Captain America and Ms. Marvel I have.

I like how they brought Mar-Vell back by having him yanked out of time instead of actually brought back from the dead, but has anyone heard when the new Captain Marvel series is supposed to start or who the creative team is going to be, or are we flying blind here as far as Mar-Vell's series is concerned?

and isnt there a rumor that the real thor is still alive?? and not erased like the rest of his people

Oh come on... All DC has been doing recently is bring people back and you guys are whining about a marvel comic you have not yet read? I cant say it often enough, if have a thing against marvel just dont post.

About Thor... don't the Marvel asgardians get killed off and reborn every few thousand years or something weird now? Isn't that their story, for some reason?

God, I am so sick of events. Seriously, everything is just a non stop event now. Can't we just have decent comic books?

No there isn't a rumor... those who read the pre-Civil War arc on Fantastic Four they established that Mjolnir crashed to the Earth in Oklahoma. Nobody could move the hammer from the crator it created including Doctor Doom who followed it home from his exile in a strange world. Then a blonde haired man in a trenchcoat and hat carrying a doctor bag showed up at the site walking to the front of the line. Upon touching the hammer there was a great flash and a lightning bolt that shot up high into the clouds. The onlookers were stunned and never noticed that the intitials of DB were etched into the top of the bag he left behind.

The writers of the New Thor series and Quesada have given clues and hints that the old Asguard is gone forever but a new one has appeared as a small town in the middle of nowhere (and where I assume DB came from). Thor and all of the norse gods are going to be given an all-new look and a vague memory of what happened before their "Deaths". But I'm pretty sure that all of our questions will be answered in Civil War #7.

They showed a preview of Thor's new look in an issue of Wizard, but it was only two sketches, both from the waist up. The costume is based on his classic outfit, but modernized and makes him look more like a Viking warrior-god than a superhero. He has on what looks possibly like it could be leather armor with an undershirt made up of some kind of mail, the cape is connected to those circle things on the top of his shirt, and the new helmet design is pretty cool. It has a noseguard now, for one thing.

The good news? Olivier Copiel designed the new costume and is apparently going to be the artist. The bad news? The writer is JMS, who wrote possibly the worst Spider-Man stories in the history of the character, so I don't expect good things from the book when it comes out.

Heh, for me the good news/bad news breaks down in the opposite direction.
Coipel can produce some good art, but I don't like his costume designs at all (see hawkeye, gimp suit Antman, warbird, Jack of hearts in Avengers). Also I find it hard to follow his artwork sometimes, and work out what is actually happening in what order.
And whilst I would not suggest that "Gwen'n'Norm have bebbys" is the high point of western literature, I have very much enjoyed all the Civil War spider-man issues penned by JMS, and Supreme Power.
So for me the writer is (probably) OK, but the artist may be problematic.

Tommy, I agree with you for the most part about Copiel's costume designs (especially Hawkeye and Ant Man. Bleech! And fortunately, the Warbird redesign didn't last), but the Thor redesign looks pretty cool, from what I can see of it. Its not a radical departure, but more of an update, and makes him look more like an actual warrior-god than a superhero. Might change my mind once I see the whole costume instead of just waist up shots and see it in color, though.

And JMS is also responsible for the godawful Spider-Totem crap as well as the Norman-Gwen thing. Whenever Joe Q leaves Marvel (which can't happen soon enough for me), I hope whoever takes over as EIC promptly tosses 95% of JMS' work on Spider-Man out of continuity because JMS has no regard for the characters' history and its also been shown that his Norman-Gwen stuff couldn't have happened because he screwed up on the timeline. (Gwen was only gone from New York for a few days, not months)

(Already got into an argument with TUE about that before the board got wiped, so that's all I have to say on the subject)

Anyway, I think plucking Captain Marvel from a point prior to his death is a better way to bring him back than many others.  I mean, it's not like he was going to stay dead; who stays dead anymore?  You can't even say Bucky and Jason Todd, the two old standbys of being dead.

I hope they plucked him from before he got his cancer, or else, what's the point, really?

I'm pretty sure he was. And he wasn't plucked intentionally; it was all an accident. Somehow the experiments they were doing with the technology used for the prison in the Negative Zone caused it to happen, and it was a major surprise when he was found.

And he figured out by himself that he was dead before they told him.

the way how they handled mar-vell's return is great in my opinion,  and now that he has knowledge of his forthcoming death, its only going to add more to the character... plus,  everyone seems to be missing the point of the title of the comic,  it isn't just mar-vell's return,  but it is going to be the return of all the imprisoned metas to earth too...

Was Nitro the guy who killed Captain Mar-vell originally (by giving him cancer)?

Correct, Nitro was setting up some kind of terrorist level attack using canisters of toxic gas.. then while Mar-Vell and him brawled one of the containers was damaged and started leaking it's contents into the air. Nitro was defeated and taken into custody but apparently the Captain breathed in enough of the toxin for his body to develop some kind of super cancer. He never had a chance for a rematch because his body rapidly weakened and took him out of action until his death.

That is the point!  He's a 'Dead Man Walking'.  A 'Man Out of Time'!  :P

I loved Mar-Vell back in the day - I'm really looking forward to his return!
