game freezing issue

I have windows xp home with sp 2.  I have downloaded and installed the 1.3 update for freedom force.  When playing the game the screen will go black for a for a bit then come back and the game will either play  okay after that or be froze.   I am running a ati X300 video card.  Anyone have this same issue.  Any help would be great.  thanks
