Well I haven't been around in awhile and when I have I've seldom posted, just sort of lurked around.
Anyway, thought I'd have a go at skinning again. Couldn't think of anything to skin, so decided to do an avatar since Carravaggio did my last two.

Hopefully I can get some new ideas and do some more skinning and shake off the rust.

BatWing

thats an awsome desgin shazam!!
wish i could skin like dat

Lunarman

Nice work Shazam. I didn't know you skinned.
I really like his beard, there just arn't enough super heroes wih beards around these days.

Good use of white also, it's hard to get white right, lol.
I must point out though that he looks very canadian becuase of the red and white and sharp points, is that intentional or not?

i'm going through tutorial ;)
i just got a paint program that can make tga files

UnkoMan

Wow. Talk about visual simplicity. It's a neat little design... The lightning bolt might go a bit too much towards the left though, I think. I understand you want the Captain Marvel shape there, but with such minimalistic areas... I don't know, maybe it's just me.

In any event it's nice, and well done.

Carravaggio

i said it on yahoo, and i'll say it again...ur a talented SOB and i am extremely jealous i didn't come up with this classic design. can't wait to try the new look in the rumble room.
i still reckon some boots would look good on him, maybe even cuffed ones like Dynamo or Cap himself wears. nonetheless, top work mate.
now lets see some more ;)

Shazam

Carr: Yeah, since you mention it he would look better with boots and boot cuffs. So I've given him some.

Unko: I must admit, I was unsure as to the lightning point being too far over, so, I've adjusted it.

Lunar: Well just because he has red, white and sharp points on his costume, doesn't make him Canadian does it?

UnfluffyBunny

I figured more along the lines of red, white and blue seeing the gloves (and now boots)
good work Shaz :)

Carravaggio

Quality.
thats the goods, mate. How about a shot of him in the RR?
And i gotta admit the more centred lightning bolt does look better as well. i thought it looked fine where it was, but this is better still.
I feel the balance of blue, red and white speaks more of britain than america, so mission accomplished. and again, i REALLY like that neckline, it just sits well.

Nice work Shazam. I didn't know you skinned.

i gotta admit that made me laugh, Shazam. you'd know why ;)
anyway it great to see you back on the wagon so to speak.

Urthman

Wow.  What a great design.  And very well executed.

Reminds me of Dave Cockram's Legion costumes.  (Yes, I mean that as high praise.)

Alaric

Great design! It's funny, but I actually like it better without the boots, though...

UnkoMan

Well, I thought without boots was a neat idea... but at the same time just blue gloves seemed a little out of place. (Like some of those colour choices on golden age costumes) The addition of boots really puts it in a context, you know? Plus, I love those little cuff boots.

So yeah, this is sweet. You don't... happen to have a hero file too, do you? Is it basically Captain Marvel powers or what? I'd love to get him into the Rumble Room.

(oh duh, also where do I pick this up?)

Protomorph

I really like this design.

It is simple, without being trite, and has a very clean look.

Shazam

OK, I had a little bit of time to myself tonight so I cobbled this skin together. This is not the mesh I will ultimately use, haven't really found one I like as yet. Anyhoo, comments and instruction are always appreciated.

Carravaggio

Looking good mate. I guess the new way of getting colours for your sknis must be working, cos they look fantastic. the deepest blue is the same huie as the lightest, only the tonal values vary, thats the sign of good colour. you don't have that basty black in the shados that recolored bases end up witrh most of the time.
i like the consistant asymmetry, without the design being flip/lighthearted, the masked face still exudes menace.
nice highlights as well, they're even without being overwhelming.
finally, that symbol. love it, its simple and interesting.
SO...powers, history, bio? is this guy a member of Skywatch? (always loved that name)
where are you taking him next?

Shazam

Right, i've tried a different mesh and given him some arm bands. I'm not really happy with the way they've turned out. I've never skinned metal before and it shows. Prehaps someone can give me a few pointers....

Oh! and I have to change his name. I just realised Syn has a character with the same name.

electro

Carravaggio

there is about eight characters with the name of ricochet in the various comicbook universes. if they can all live with that, then i'm sure FR can live with two apex's. :)
the skin works very well on the tommyboy mesh, nice to see you doing a bit'o hexing again. i think the bands work well, they break up the costume nicely.
i'm getting a 'shocker' feel, or a blaster, in COX speak. i don't feel anything is wrong with his armbands, metal or no, it looks fine, with good contrast.
he definitely looks more menacing with the bulkier build. i'd say on first look he'd be a bad guy, but the name seems heroic...so which is it?
just my view, but i'd say this one is done, mate, and done well.
nice one.

Shazam

Well since Carravaggio is skinning full steam again, as is always the case, he's got me wanting to skin again. Seeing his banner for his new website reminded me that I had one in development sometime ago that I'd abandoned. Modding is damn hard and not as enjoyable as skinning. I like skinning originals even though they're not overly popular here.

I will be working on the above now, and aim to get all my old skins on it. That includes voltimax's skins, since he is me after all  :P plus I have some ideas for new characters that I want to skin.

Carravaggio

dude that rocks, and its the best new i've heard all week! love the logo, great minds think alike, eh? I'll be sure to link to your page from mine :D

tommyboy

The skin is looking good, as is the logo (I went with lightning for my logo at the freedom fortress, so it appeals to me even more).
As to the metal, I'd suggest quite a lot of contrast between the dark and light, and experiment with the patterns on the _refl.tga, as that can alter the appearance of shiny stuff quite dramatically.
Anyhoo, I'm sure there are plenty of better skinners than I who can give you tips and advice..

Look at who's changing his mind again. That has to be your skill...changing your mind every few months about how you feel about something. :P. Anyway, I'm glad you found something to enjoy about FF *again*. Maybe you'll release some more skins and finally finish that mod? One can dream, right?

chuckles

Yay!!! Glad to see you skinning again, and designing cool characters too...now if you only had some kind of...um..."Mod" to put those skins in. I for one really enjoy original creations, but when they look better than mine I vow to get even. ;)
Cool banner, keep on skinning.

Doctor Voodoo

wow good work, I really like Apex a lot , and I think the armbands are a real plus to his overall look! Keep it up! :)

Shazam

OK, I'm really rusty and never have really been skinning consistently.

I call this chappie Major Prime.

Carravaggio

Damn dude, that orange/brown tone is gorgeous! It goes perfectly with the blue, and i'm a sucker for asymmetry.
Great job on matching the seams (worst part of the job) andi like the symbol use and placement.
First things i noticed when i opened the page: his bootcuffs and the mask shape/construction, both of which are great. I dont know why but bootcuffs always give me hell. These ones look shiny and sharp, really good. I like the mask as well, has a functional, military look to it.
Suggestions:
Some dark lines around  the chest eagle symbol to help it stand out
Yellow hand gloves. You have obviously made a conscious decision to have him barehanded, but i would still be interested to see what he looks like with small hand gloves, or military/swat style hand gloves. Just a reaction i had.
Another thing i would like to see trialed is a combat belt with pouches. Now this depends on what his powers are and what sort of hero he is, he but i'm getting a more than human hero vibe form him, and to break up those big expanses of colour i would be interested to see a belt laden pouch skoped onto the mesh. I'm thinking skinned all in gray.
He DOES lool like a shield slinger, even if you ignore the base mesh. I guess bootcuffs and a full head mask will always be reminiscent of Cap (RIP).
So...powers, history, story?
ALl in all a tight skin with some great features, the rich colour the meatching of seams, and individual elements such as the mask and the bootcuffs.
Looks like your return is a triumphant one :)
Very much looking forward to more of the same.

Shazam

Thanks Carr,
Gloves: I did think of having gloves on him, but decided against it, mainly because I struggle to skin extras. Those boot cuffs took alot of experimentation before I was happy with them, lol.

Belt: Yes he was going to have a belt, but only because I had trouble aligning the strip from the torso to the leggings. I'll have to speak to you about more in depth about nifskoping, since all I can do with it is hide mesh parts.

History and powers? Well you know thats my biggest weakness with originals. I skin a costume first, then go onto to skinning another. I still have to create character profiles and hero files for all my other characters, lol.

Podmark

Nice job, simple but pleasant design. I kinda think the right arm needs a better cut off for the sleeve, a glove perhaps, or somekind of band or maybe just some lining. Otherwise it looks too plain.

I have to be honest, I think bootcuffs are outdated, and I find them to be a generally undesirable costume element for the most part. That said they do work well with your design.

Perhaps a fearsome face expression will be nice. ^_^
