I'm going to be honest with you. I am not digging the new avatar. In fact, I actually think I like your first version the most. Now, I'm not trying to rag on you here, so I will tell you what I would do. Obviously there will be differences in style, taste, intent, etc.

Okay, so... In this new one, the face. It looks almost like you did a burn or colour burn layer over top of the skin. Are you trying to make him darker? The first version had a fairly asian (although washed out and sort of cartoony) skin tone. Being named Raijin, I thought it worked. The second looks fine for a caucasian. This one, I'm not sure. It doesn't end up looking human at all. If you want him to be darker skinned there are better ways to do this. Try looking at Syn's tut but if you need any help just PM me and I'll be glad to.

I notice that since version 2 the gloves and lightning bolt have been different colours; the gloves being more blue and the bolt more grey. I'd say stick to one for both of them. Also, you might want to add some seams. I did a tutorial about those a while back. It could actually be better, looking back, but it is a good place to start.

The texture... Well, you did it pretty good! However, I don't think this skin needs it at all, but this is personal preference. Also it goes over bolt and blue, as the same texture. If I was going to do that I'd probably just shift it a bit for one of them. The refl on the gloves seems overboard, also. And finally, the blue of the suit... I actually really liked the washed out blue of the original, HOWEVER, I understand if you want a more "super heroy" shade. I think you've done alright except for one thing. There isn't enough difference. There's basically a sort of dark and a sort of light and nothing in between. I'd actually go in and add highlights to the light parts, then shadows to the dark parts.

To do this, create a new layer (one for highs one for lows). For highlights select the lightest colour, then make that colour a bit brighter. You can change tonal value a bit sometimes, but I wouldn't worry about it now. For shadows it would be darker than the darkest. Some people get all artsy and use a bit of opposite colour and blah blah but that's colour theory and frankly I find it isn't even needed. Let's not go into it. Okay, so after you have your colour you just use a really soft brush to add it where you want it. Light up inside the lightest areas. Then use the smudge and blur tools to get things looking natural and not like blocks of colour. You can throw in a couple gaugasian blurs to speed it up, but I wouldn't rely solely on them.

One last thing. Add a bit of shadow where hair meets head, similar to how you did for the fellow in the hat (who looks pretty nice, except his blue pants are much too bright. Contrast is your friend!). This just makes the hair look more natural.

Hopefully all my flapping is helpful. I think if you just keep practicing you should pick it up. Good luck!

EDIT: That's odd... my message got all mangled. Hopefully it is good now.

BatWing

yeah i need to work on my skin tones and refl
i gonna work on the skin tones and thx for some tutorials unko
do u have any tutorials on faces?

how do u add shades under the hair?

UnkoMan

Well, I assume the hair is on a layer above the face, correct? What I usually do is just make a new layer in between, select the area of the hair, and fill that in on the new layer with the darkest shadow. Then I move it down a bit, blur some, and erase bits like over the ears or wherever wouldn't have so much shadow. Around the neck maybe.

By tutorials on faces, do you mean just skin tone or actually making faces? IPS did a great one for making faces from scratch some time ago, but I'm unsure where to find it now.

BatWing

also how do u make cool lines on the clothes?
like on your avatar skin it has cool clothes lines on yer shirt and pants

and i noticed that in game my avatar skin is really dark and i was comparing the light with one of yer skins
how do u make the skin lighter/brighter?

i have to highlight my character in the game just to see him
all i could see was my symbol and gloves

i want to make custom faces and skin tones also

UnkoMan

"Cool lines" would be the seams tutorial I linked you to.

Also, if your skin seems too dark, but it isn't in hero tool, it could be that the mesh needs its light values adjusted. Run it through a converter for that.

BatWing

run a converter through it?
and it will work?
its a vxmale so it might be old so i'll do it

BatWing

new rubberdude skin!

i tried to do seams and stuff yeah

Lunarman

It's looking good, did you use the morph mesh?

Any chance of a closer image so we can see your seams, it looks like you've done them though :)

All I'd say you need to learn now is highlights, and then you can go develop your style and practise.

So, here's a link to the highlights tut http://frworld.wikispaces.com/skin+highlights+tutorial
I normally do this after finishing the skin rather than before, but I think either way works :)

Good luck, and good work

BatWing

thx for some tutorials
i read the seams tutorial 7 times
heres a closer looks

i also did a different look on the symbol

and thx

Podmark

Is that a reflection on his face? I'd remove that unless there's a reason. I looked in the mirror today and I'm pretty sure my skin was all shiny :P

Otherwise you're doing some good work, keep at it!

Lunarman

Looking good there Raijin!

Much improvement

Tomato

Actually, I disagree with you Podmark. If RubberDude is indeed rubber, a shine indicating it is not out of place. I will say though... the seem on the neck needs to be widened to match the one on the chest.

BatWing

yeah the seem need to be fixed on the neck
i'll fix that problem today

That's what I meant by if it was intentional. If he's meant to be rubber looking then by all means.

Kaede

hey raijin... i was doing some random skins and came upon your character, and read this topic, so i downloaded your updated skin, and played around a bit... so i just changed some textures and stuff, and put the skin in a vxaura mesh... so that it resembles your gif character in your googlepages

so here's what i got so far...

so what do ya think? is it any good? or bad? i know in the preview picture, the white in the bodypart has a more touch of blue than the gloves, but in-game or in CTool it's not... i don't know in the preview why it is... maybe it's because of the reflect of the aura or something... this also needs some seaming in the thunder-like symbol... so just consider this as more of a suggestion kind of preview...

BatWing

Kaede

i'm glad you liked it man... hehehe but it was just more of an edit than a skin, coz i just based it from your own skin of it, so you're the great one... hehehe... but i'll try skinning your character though... coz you're an anime-fan like myself... hehehe... ("did you get your name from raijin in naruto?") hehehe... me i've been having trouble creating my own character for my name... hehehe... still can't find the right design and mesh for it... hehehe  :D

BatWing

the fat guy in naruto?
the prisoner?
nope
just  a kewl name thunder god
named of a thunder god
whats kaede stands for?

Kaede

ahh ok...
kaede means "maple tree" in japanese...
so nothing special... hahaha
