Idle Speculation

As some of you might be aware, I've been working toward getting a webcomic and whatnot going. Which is fine, but as I want to have enough pages done before I set a pay for hosting or anything so I don't have to stress to much about getting pages done.

However, until that actually happens, I've been paying 20+ bucks a year for a domain name (www.kotsproductions.com) that I'm not currently using. And even when I do use it, if I'm going to shell out a monthly fee for a good host, I'd rather get my money's worth for it, y'know?

Given the current state of affairs, I'd really like to set up another skin group site, similar to Gamma Patrol, NPI, and Freedom Corp. I need a more permanent place for my skins anyway, and if I can set something out to help the community, then hey, I'm all for it.

What I'd need in order to get started though, is someone who actually knows who can lead me by the hand for a little bit. I know basic HTML editing, but I don't know anything about PHP, website design, purchasing servers, or anything else. Whether that means someone who basically tells me what server to buy and takes over, or someone who is willing to deal with my ignorance long enough to get me to the point where I can do my own site (This option would be preferable. As I said, I'm going to be making my own site sooner then later, and I'd like to be able to deal with that myself.) is completely up to them.

And, to be quite candid, after mooching off this community since the days when I was still going by Antmananext, I'd rather like to do something that really helps.

.com names arent worth it... the main reason I switched to .co.uk is it's only £5 for 2 years :P ($10: $4 a year and $2 service charge)
If I had the time I would offer to help walk you through, but unfortunately I dont, tho if you have any specific point you get stuck on feel free to pm me and i'll see if I can help (even though i'm STILL working towards my nat dip. in webdesign @_@ )

You are paying over US$20 a year for a .com site? That's more than double what I pay. You should be able to register a .com for about $9/year and many of the other domains (e.g. .info) are dirt cheap.

You should get a book on setting up a basic web site or go to one of the online places that discuss setting up a basic web site. You don't need anything beyond simple HTML to set up a site that hosts your skins and things like that. Just set up everything on a folder in your PC and, when you get things looking the way you want, buy a basic shared hosting service (probably ~$5/month) and copy that folder over. Scripting, cgi, php, etc are all fine, but really optional to start out and you can always add them later if you see a need.

Yeah, but the problem is the one I'm using is charging me 9 extra dollars not to post my personal information everywhere. But you're right, it's freaking rediculous, and I probably won't bother next time around. But as of right now, I've already paid, so these points are basically moot until next January

About the Html,You're probably right. My spring break finally started, so I might work something out. Still, I would like to learn PHP at some point, and I'd rather not learn it from extended Highschool(Community College)

Edit: If I do get something set up though, would there be any skinners willing to do something like this?
