Jimmy Page annihilates all those other guys with both hands tied behind his back.  John Bonham is the most influential rock drummer out of that whole lot.  Robert Plant had a unique but perfect voice for their sound.  John Paul Jones added so much texture to Zep's sound.  Led Zeppelin did so much more than any other band between 1968-1980 -- they covered every sound and didn't allow themselves to be limited to a genre.

On the other hand, a band like KISS fell sway to whatever was hot at the time ("I Was Made For Loving You" - uggh... and what was that awful 90's acoustic ballad they had ...uggh x2).  Shortly after when grunge hit big, KISS made their attempt at that too.

I also picked Rolling Stones, not because of what they do today, or even in the last 20 years, but because of their influence on modern music.  Unfortunately, they don't make music anymore -- they just make money.

I have comments about some of the other bands, but if you don't have anything nice to say...

I agree with what you said about Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones. Except that everything KISS did in their early days was their best. I have their Destroyer album, which is one of their best ones. And some of their earlier stuff beyond that is also amazing. But most, if not all of their 80's and 90's stuff was terrible, if not worse beyond that, and I totally agree with you on that. I like to rock and roll all night, and party every day, and shout it out loud, but beyond that... I don't know.

Anyways, you can comment about anything, really. Or add on some bands ya like. I don't care. :)

And thanks for voting. :)

*grabs a flute and balances on one leg*

Let me bring you songs from the wood
to make you feel much better than you could know,
Dust you down from tip to toe,
Show you how the garden grows,
Hold you steady as you go.
Join the chorus if you can:
it'll make of you an honest man.

Let me bring you love from the field:
poppies red and roses filled with summer rain.
To heal the wound and still the pain
that threatens again and again
as you drag down every lover's lane.
Life's long celebration's here.
I'll toast you all in penny cheer.

Let me bring you all things refined:
galliards and lute songs served in chilling ale.
Greetings well met fellow, hail!
I am the wind to fill your sail.
I am the cross to take your nail:
A singer of these ageless times
With kitchen prose and gutter rhymes.

There's no Who. This poll is invalid. ;)

I'm NOT into metal* in any way shape or form, and even I know that Jethro Tull and Rush are required listening!

*Yeah.  Tull . . . metal . . . not how I would label it either.

ow_tiobe_sb

What a tick!  Why is it that we never see Uncle Yuan and Ian Anderson in the same room at the same time?

...

Could it be that "Yuan" is a cipher for "Ian" (following a similar convention by which "Eoin" is pronounced "Owen")?

...

...

Sorry everybody. I was thinking I could add like a billion more voting options, but then everythign got screwed up. So you'll have to re-do your votes. I re-added some bands that weren't on it originally, so HOPEFULLY everything will be okay.

Vote away!

ow_tiobe_sb

What?!  No ELP?

Or ELO?! :D

Just kidding. I voted.

Reepicheep

I voted Led Zep, and only Led Zep.

All others can burn!

BentonGrey

Man Rep, you beat me to it...that's pretty much what I was going to say.  They are the greatest band ever...end of discussion.

BatWing

this is hard
so i didn't vote
cause theres
lynard
who
cooper
zepplin
acdc
rush
and slayer

The Phantom Eyebrow

Some top notch bands here and no mistake.  And yet... and yet... THERE'S NO URIAH HEEP!  I expect this oversight to be corrected forthwith!

Tough to choose two.  I do think that Zep is the tops and perhaps Skynard might be able to rock on the longest by dint of their three-man guitar attack line up.  But I'm not sure...

BatWing

why wasn't iron maiden up there? or van halen, black sabbath, motorhead, misfits, sex pistols, ramones, the doors and pink floyd

Simon And Garfunkel?

Okay, now you crossed the line...

*banishes Reep from... stuff*

 Now GLOP!

But yeah, I know I left out tons of bands, its just I'm afraid it may mess up like last time. Then I'll forget which band was in the right spot and had the right amount of votes, etc, etc. Does anyone know what's up with that? That's why I changed bands around and reset the vote count. So, should I risk it and add more bands?

Face it Spammy, there's no way you can make everyone happy, especially when it comes to music.  I, for one, do consider Simon and Garfunkle to be one of the best groups of all time.  And in the top spot there could only really be the Beatles.  Or Elvis.  Or the Grateful Dead.  Or Traffic.  Or the Byrds . . . .

You get the point.

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are the table legs of the two-legged table of modern music.

It's a wobbly table.

Some great bands there although as with any "best band" poll, somebody's favourite is bound to be left out. I would have voted for The Jimi Hendrix Experience if they were on the list, but alas, they were not... so I settled for Cream... they had some of the chunkiest riffs in music prior to the appearance of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin but managed to give out a funky vibe.

Yaaaaaaaaaay, Cream. :)

Eric Clapton was like, the cooliest dude in that. I mean, all three of them were awesome, its just, you know... aura of awesomeness... from them...

Anyway, good choice. :)

I'm satisfied that someone else voted for Tull too.  ^_^

Does nobody have any love for slayer? :(

Anybody, before I switch them with different bands?

I can take them or leave them, I guess... I think they're superseded by Metallica (pre-1989... everything they released after that is just varying degrees of mediocre) and Pantera in terms of both musicality and technical skill, although I have to admit that Slayer's "Reign in Blood" is probably one of the top ten heaviest metal records ever.

Spam

Everything they did before their original drummer left was great. There were some odd ones that didn't make the cut, like some stuff before Reign in Blood. But their Seasons In The Abyss album and South of Heaven albums were pretty good. Not quite as good as Reign in Blood, but still Slayer good. :) Awesome thing is, is that they're still makin' stuff. I want their newest album that came out a bit last year.

Anyway... I guess I just really like Slayer. :)

EDIT: w00t! Learned how to add tons of options, and tons of bands. :) Hopefully this will make a few more people happy. =p

Oh great, you added Pink Floyd AFTER I voted.  [sigh]
