misusing skins?

is it wrong to put skins on different meshes than they were created for?  for example, i use tj's punisher, with all the weapons, for; punisher, cable, bishop, forge, and even warmachine.
as skinners, how do you feel about that?
reason it's a deal, there's a mod i've been working on for about 5 years now.  it'll probably never be finished, other than my own playground, but still, just in case...

AfghanAnt

I wouldn't care personally. I mean it is a skin so why move it to any mesh you want.

Tomato

Personally? I don't much care. If there's a mesh that fits a particular requirement for a mod or something better, then that's fine. using the skin in the first place though depends on the requirements of the skinner.

UnkoMan

Welp, that's everything I would have said already. With my skins, once you download it, if it's for personal use, you can do what you like with it. In fact, if somebody had a skin of mine they thought looked better on a different mesh, I might even be interested in hearing about it.

JKCarrier

I do this all the time -- a new mesh will come out for a character, but I still like the old skin, so I just move it over (and modify if necessary). As long as it's just for you own use, no harm no foul.

Klauser

Also guilty as charged.

I was the default "skin collector" for our local gaming group when we first stumbled onto FF1.  Whenever we'd get together (either in RL or online) I would "stage" all the updates/mods on a single CD and pass/email it around.  As such, my goal was to keep the number of meshes down to a minimum to keep the file sizes low.

The "mesh explosion" of 2-3 years ago was a real boon for getting skins we were after - so I picked up just enough skinning abilities to be a decent kit-basher.  That way, I could modify some really outstanding skins from custom meshes onto more common meshes.

The prevailing opinion - then as now - is that most artists don't care what you do with their skins as long as it stays on your computer.  If you have a burning desire to "share" a kitbashed skin - you need to get the authors permission first.

murs47

plain and simple, it wouldn't bother me.

to tell the truth somebody would probably think of a better mesh to display it on, therefore making the skinners work look better.

At the very least, 90% - 95% of my skins are based on C6 base skins, so as far as I'm concerned, feel free to use and abuse my skins as you see fit.   I really don't consider myself one of the better (or even noticable) skinners, so I always appreciate it when I know that something that I released is being used in any way, shape, or form.

My thoughts exactly.

I think that what someone does with the skins and meshes they've collected is their own business...as long as no one is altering them and then passing them off as originals. I constantly try other people's skins on a variety of meshes for use in my own game only.

i wasn't being as clear as i thought i was.  this mod will most likely be released someday, and that might be so far in the future, we have a whole new generation of skinners, and all of you will have moved on...

FLASH_22798

I stick to my original statement.

If you're going to actually use something that I skinned, use it for whatever you see fit.   If that means putting the skin onto a different mesh, for whatever reason, then so be it.   I would appreciate knowing if they're being re-distributed somewhere, but that's mostly so I can see how.

Again, I'm going to use Flash's words, I feel the exact same way.

If you're making a mod... well some skinners like to be asked permission before hand anyhow. Most don't mind, as long as they are credited. I don't think using a skin on a different mesh would change this at all.

Me, well... Go ahead.

bearded

i appreciate the support, thanks.  my deal is, i'm like tommyboy, in his avengers special mod.  when i do a batman, for example, i like to have a lot of different skins, and randomize.  and the thing is, most all batman skins are compatible.  that's just one example.  another thing, is sometimes the skins are made before the character specific mesh is made, even tho the _basic is the same.
the mod itself, i'm having a lot of fun with.

Toxic_J

I don't care what people would do with my skins. They can use them in any way that makes them happy.

Tomato

Again, I think it's just a matter of getting permission for the skins in the first place. But really? For me the only thing that would really irritate me is if someone didn't credit me, or sold my stuff.
