Hey there boys and girls,
How's everyone doin'? Alright I hope. :) So I've got an issue that someone knowledgable about video cards could assist me with. I recently got a new PC...yah me ! But the card I got has a fan on it that is extremely loud for some reason ; it's the Sapphire(ati) Radeon x1900 xtx 512 card. Is there any way to either disable the fan or some other viable way to get rid of the noise? Help me...please!  :(

It's generally not a good idea to fiddle with your PC's cooling, as heat is the natural enemy of component performance. If it's a card that you bought separately from the system, you can try uninstalling it and returning it to your retailer in exchange for a quieter model. I know that XFX makes an NVIDIA GeForce 7950-based videocard (it's about equivalent to the Radeon X1900 in performance) that uses a totally passive cooling system, no fans or blowers at all. It'll cost you a bit more though.

If, for some reason, you can't spring for a different video solution, see if you can customize the card's fan settings. I haven't used any of the newer video cards that have come out in the last 3 years or so, but there are utilities out there that will help you customize your video card's fan response. The one that's most commonly used is ATI Tool. You can get it for free here. Just make sure that you know what your PC/Video card's default/most stable settings are before changing them. It's not the same as having a totally quiet cooling solution, but at least you can set your videocard's fan so that it only goes into "loud-as-a-vacuum-cleaner" mode when you really need it to.
