Can someone recommend a good firewall for me? Preferably freeware. I've been having some problems and I think a new firewall program would help.

I have never had any trouble with ZoneAlarm. Their free version works well for me.

Thanks Stumpy. I installed it and it seems to be working fine.

I've gotta give a big ditto to that.     Much easier to configure and use than the one that comes with Norton....that you pay for!  <_<

I just switched over my home PC to ZoneAlarm Basic and ClamWin AntiVirus from Norton Internet Security 2006.  No problems so far.  (Be sure to supplement ZoneAlarm with other apps to protect what ZoneAlarm doesn't... anti-spyware, anti-virus, anti-rootkit, anti-spam, etc.)

I refuse to pay new application prices for a lousy one year update subscription when quality freeware is available.  Way to keep market share, Symantec.

On the downside though, ZoneAlarm Basic doesn't let me do traditional firewall configuration (allow x ip inbound to y ip and port z).  If you need that, you need to look elsewhere. I don't pass any inbound traffic through my router from the internet so I don't need that kind of functionality.

(Why, you may ask, do I even need a firewall?  'Cuz I have a laptop from work I occasionally plug into my home network and a wireless router and I don't like to take chances.)

Zone Alarm Free has been almost spotless for me too. AVG free is nice too.

Norton, once a respected name, has alas become synonymous with bloated crapware, at least as ar as Symantec's home-user products are concerned.

Prtetty much sums it up. I should convert to AVG. Does it have a firewall?

I don't think so; at  least, I'm using only the antivirus.

No, it doesn't, but Zone Alarm is free and has a good reputation.
