custom installer and new (old) maps v1.1

I've created a custom installer for FFvTTR to make it easier to manage and distribute custom fx, ez script mini-mods, voice packs, characters, etc.  The installer knows how to move files into the correct locations and how to write to the dat files so it does most of the work for you.

This is for FFvTTR only.

As always, back up your mod before installing things into it.

m25 installer for FFvTTR
version 1.0

What is it?

This program will install maps, fx, voice sets, mini-mods, etc. into any FFvTTR mod.

It handles the placement of files and writing information directly to the mod's data files.

Installation

Simply unzip the included files to a convenient location.

Included Files:

readme.txt - this file
m25install.exe - the installer
install - the directory where you place your install files

How to use it

Once you have downloaded a zip file that is compatible with the m25installer, unzip the contents of the zip file into the install directory included with this program, preserving all subdirectories.

Run the m25installer.exe file.  Choose the mod you want to install to, select the package that you want to install and then click the install button.  The program will take a few moments and then you will get a confirmation dialog that the install is complete.

For example:  I've downloaded a zip file called ff1smalldesert.zip
1. Inside the zip file I see a folder called ff1_small_desert
2. I move that folder into my m25installer/install directory
3. I then run m25install.exe and I'll see an entry called MISSION/MAP FF1 Small Desert
4. I choose the mod I want to install it to (say ffx3)
5. I then click on the FF1 Small Desert entry
6. Finally, I click the install button and wait until it is done.

Known issues

The interface uses TK, and isn't pretty.

You can also install directly to the Data directory of the game, but it isn't recommended.

You have to use the m25buildinstaller program to produce install packages that will work with this installer.

Get it and the install builder here:

I've attempted to convert some maps from FF for FFvTTR.  They make use of the installer to automatically install everything in its proper place.

Tommy just said it better than I could...

Hi M25,

This sounds like a great tool for modders and folks just wanting to install mods...

I'm a bit unclear of how to move the maps you made (or a mod) into the Installer's install directory, since I can't seem to find it.  I tried dragging the map folder into the open install screen, but that doesn't work.

Please advise.

Dana :D

M25

Turns out the files are ok, they just didn't run on a computer that doesn't have FFvTTR installed.  Everything is updated and should work now.

cmdrkoenig67 - inside the m25installer directory there should be another directory called install.  If it isn't there, then create it.  You don't do this with the program, you have to do it manually.  You can put all three maps into the install directory at once.

Then when you run the installer, it will look inside the install directory, and will present you with a list of things that it can install.

cmdrkoenig67

OMIGAWD!  As you instructed...I made a folder, named it "install" and put the map folders in it...It worked!  Thank you, M!

Great idea M, something that has been needed for ages!  Thanks man, you are a marvel!

cmdrkoenig67

M25, of the three maps you've converted...only the ff1_frozenlake and ff1_smalldesert installed with no problem.  For some reason, I can't get the ff1_frozenpier to install.

this may seem like a dumb quest. but how do we put files in it to use.it says something about a directory but i dont know where its at.please instruct me.heeellpp!!

Awsome tool M25!  Great job coming up with this, I cant believe how simplified you made in stalling custom content for us. What a asset to the community you are.

Herodad, dont you see a "install folder" next to the m25install program after you unzipped it? if not do what M25 posted earlier:

Now I can finally install all the stuff ive been waiting to install (fx, voice packs) but just been to lasy, thanks to the m25 "easy button"

M25

herodad1: what did you use to unzip the file?  I know I shipped the install directory with the tool, but it doesn't seem to be showing up for some people.

usagent:  Unfortunately, these things have to be exported by the m25installbuilder program before you can use the installer on them.  Pre-existing stuff will not work.  It's not hard to make an install file since it is just a button click, and all it does is add a text file telling the installer what to do so it doesn't create bloated files, but someone does have to do it.

cmdrkoenig67: make sure the ff1_frozenpier unzipped correctly.  It's directory should look a lot like the other two maps.

Awesome!  Thank you so much M25, this is just what I would wish for if I had a magic lamp and 3 wishes!

All hail M25's reality-warping genie powers!

Worked on my first try - Thats the only way to get old ff1 maps into the new game - Thanks alot for the Tool hopefully people will release more ff1 maps to install this way - I had a feeling of nostalgia seeing the old maps again

M25

I've updated the installer and install builder to version 1.1

Most changes are to the install builder to correct some issues with the install packages.
The Installer now deals with hero files correctly and generates a log file to help when things go wrong.

Revenant

So if I have chronic problems installing Voicepacks..

I can use this to package them up with the Builder, and run them through the Installer?  (For me, this seems like much less work than going in manually and installing)

I just tried it with a map and it worked great

M25

Actually, the builder needs the voice pack to be installed correctly already.  It will then package it up so that it is easy for someone else to install - or for you to install in another mod.

Okay...Here's a weird thing...I was able to install the ff1_frozen_pier map easilly into my FFX3 folder (and it works great there, as do the others you released), but for some reason, it still won't install into my regular Irrational/Data folder (and I've tried it several more times).

I'm confused here. I just tried to install Thor's voice into FFX without success. I'm not sure I'm understanding what you are saying here. I want to install more voices but was using Thor's as a test. Any help installing voices would be aprreciated it. I put it in the install folder and it didn't show up in the installer.

Allow me to quote m25 above:

QuoteUnfortunately, these things have to be exported by the m25installbuilder program before you can use the installer on them.

In other words, you can only install voice packs that have been specifically made to work with this installer.
