Recommendation for Video Card?

I bought a new Widescreen LCD recently because my old monitor was going bad.  Unfortunately, something about the resolution City of Heroes doesn't seem to like.  It won't even start up in safe mode.  I assume the problem is my onboard graphics chipset (nVidia), as it is not a recent system and was a bit on the obsolete side when I bought it.

Can anyone recommend a fairly economical video card that will handle widescreen and is supported for CoH?

Economical offers too much wiggle room. For me, a good card for $100 is economical; for others it's absurd. Put a number on the word. :p

Under $120.  That's the most I'd ever consider paying for a video card and even then only if I had to.  $60-$100 is more in my comfort zone.  Upgrades start getting too expensive and I might as well buy a whole new system.

Best place for video card reviews: Tom's Hardware Video Reviews

The site has a monthly article series called: The Best Gaming Video Cards for the Money. The April issue should be very relevant.

Considering your main problem, I've gone with ATI and their widescreen format support is pretty good and I had no problems transitioning to that display format (1600x1200 to 1920x1200). And playing CoX, you get a nice gorgeous piece of real estate to see the gameworld. :)
