Heya!

Ok, so after a near six month slump consisting of zero drawing, I've created something.

I give you:

Dark Phoenix!

I've been studying Andrew Loomis' books, which have been wonderful reads. Seriously. Google his name and you'll find links to PDF versions of his art books. This is my greatest female drawing yet, and I'm really proud. I'm also glad to be back into drawing. I have yet to work on the colors, but I have a couple awesome ideas. For now, there are the pencils.

Thanks for looking.

Andrew Loomis. Word.

The books are really old and out of print...and from what I understand, his Estate refuses to reprint them? However, they are the best figure drawing books I have ever seen.

Good job on Phoenix, FF. Looks like you've improved quite a bit! Soften up the cheek bones a little, because the square face is looking just a little too manly.

Revenant

I agree about the cheekbones, but awesome work!  Keep it up bud!

Figure Fan

Hey, thanks guys!

Ok, I want to fix up the cheekbones, but what do you mean by softening them, exectly? Should I, like, round them out more?

Thanks for the input.

MJB

Very solid line work Zach. I recall your work being more sketchy before this recent drawing. I like it.

Thanks, Meej.

I've only begun to realize how useful mechanical pencils can be for finished line work.

(I just finished coloring the hair. Its shaping up nicely)

Intensity

nice, Zach!

I especially love the hair!

great job :)

Uncle Yuan

I'll add my kudos, too!

But I think it's the jaw line that's too masculine.   :D

Mowgli

Well done sir. Loomis is a very good reference. The books are gone but you can find a lot of it on the net. Your proportion there is good and the line work is solid. Keep it it.

Uncle Yuan noted that the jawline is too masculine. That would be my first instinct as well, but there are a number of female models/actresses sporting very masculine jawlines. A strong jawline can actually work on a female character and give them a sense of power. I figured that is what FF intended.

The cheekbones on the other hand, are giving the face a very strong, almost skull like shape. Something that doesn't work really well. Well, it works on guys, but not for the gals. Try changing the cheekbones so they are more vertical in nature and don't bisect the edges of the head. I was going to find a reference pic...but the poster just above already has a an excellent art thread of his own. Take a gander at Mowgli's thread and I'm sure you'll find a great example.

Hope that helps! :)

Oh, one more mention...not quite as good as Lumis's books, but there was a comic called Impact University given out on Free Comic Book day that had some neat drawing tips.

Tommy Troy

I agree with Psychopanda about the jawline - she doesn't look particularly cuddly but she has a lot of character - think Katherine Hepburn.  It's nice to see an occasional female comic character without huge boobs and an anime face.  :)

Hey man....I like the hard set jaw! Makes her look more menacing and I love that hair.  Very nice work. :D

Ok! Something new! I decided to go back and do another color pencil portrait with my handy Prismacolors.

Sticking with the Marvel movie theme, I give you Famke Janssen as Phoenix:

I used a different paper on this one because a large pad of charcoal paper seems to be a rare find these days..

That is really cool, FF!  I've never been able to handle Prismacolors with the skill you've displayed.  Excellent work my friend.  Hope you'll consider doing something like that for your next Calendar entry.
