:spoiler: GL stuff below

Okay, so the Sinestros Corps has yellow which is fear, the Zamarons use pink which is love, the Guardians spurned emotions and chose willpower which is (for some reason) green.

NOW, in the latest issue of GL we see that Zamarons have fashioned the Star Sappphire into a ring and battery then placed the lantern in a room with both a yellow and green lantern AND four spaces left over.

I guess that leaves Blue, Red, Orange and Violet (maybe brown) lanterns?

Red would probably be anger/hate and blue would be sadness/depression. What would purple and orange  be? Happiness?

Uncle Yuan

I think orange for happiness is good.  Purple would be for desire?  Perhaps on the attirbutes-not-emotions theme blue would be something like intellect?

Ajax

Anybody else getting a bad Power Ranger vibe from all these different colored lanterns?

NeoDarke

*sings offkey* Go, go, gree, no, re, no.... Yell, gah! Not that one ether... Oh the hell with it. Lanterns! *starts humming*

lugaru

Oh great... what's next? Captain mood ring?

Revenant

The DC Comics GL messageboards usually have a discussion like this..

In Eartern cultures, the color red can represent happiness.  In some cultures it stands for death.  In Western cultures it signifies rage.  So which one do we go with?  And would aliens from all corners of the galaxy even see it that way?

Wouldn't Kryptonians, for instance, see red as the color of life since its the color of their sun?  And Martians wouldn't think of red as a bad color, either.

Wouldn't green symbolize envy more than willpower?

It's a confusing world, color.   :D

No, his name is Doctor Spectrum.  ;)

Funny thing is, my friend and I had a Blue and a Red Lantern in DC Heroes RPG more than 10 years ago. Of course, that Red Lantern was constructed by the Russians...

One thing that interested me about the scene was the fact that the Zamarons had the green lantern in the center.  I'm guessing that has some meaning.  If you think about it, willpower could be used to overcome all the other emotions.

Anyway, I was thinking about this one day when I was supposed to be working.   :P  The first thing that occurred to me was that it's really easy to think of more than 6 emotions (I'm not counting willpower as an emotion).  So they could only represent the big 6.  Others would just be different versions of one of those.  For example, envy/jealousy could just be another version of hate.  So if it were up to me I'd go with:

The first three are given of course
Green = Willpower
Yellow = Fear
Violet = Love

Red = Hate
Orange = Joy
Blue = Sorrow
Indigo = Courage

Like Revenant said this sort of thing would be really subjective but still it killed time until 5:00.

Sword

Yellow is fear, tempered by Green for Willpower, so my thought is blue is Inspiration. The opposite of being afraid of something is being inspired by it.

yell0w_lantern

Maybe.
I don't know that courage is an emotion exactly. It's a character quality and a virtue, certainly. I guess it's a possibility though.
Anger, sadness and happiness are pretty obvious though.

Looking at the sites below, there are a lot of possibilities and I noticed that courage is among them but I didn't see any that were especially convincing.
There is one list at the end of the first page that has the other emotions and has surprise listed. - I suppose but, again, I'm not convinced ... yet.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Willpower isn't an emotion either, so it isn't limited necessarily to just emotions.

Sword

right. It's not emotions that the lanterns represent, but a driving force behind their actions.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Really, though, isn't courage just when some other driving force overcomes fear?  Otherwise fear's opposite would be courage.  But think about it.  A couragous person can be so because his will overcomes his fear, or his anger, or love for someone else in danger, or even his own sense of morality.

I'm betting that courage isn't one of them.

Ajax

Wasn't the whole yellow = fear thing revealed in the Green Lantern: Rebirth story? If that is true, isn't that a bad retcon? I mean Sinestro never looked afraid to me, heck he constantly challenged the entirity of the green lantern corp. If that is true than it seems like a cheap excuse to make Hal's actions as Parallax "okay". Probably make more sense if yellow = wraith, since both sinestro and Hal as parallax seemed to be on a personal vendetta.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Sinestro CAUSES fear, hence the yellow ring.  All of the Sinestro corps, rather than FEELING fear CAUSE it.

In other words, those who can use the corresponding color attribute for their own purposes are the ones who can use that ring.  The GLs use their willpower, Sinestro's bunch already wield fear as a weapon, even before the rings, the Star Sapphires fuel their evil deeds with the memory of love scorned and so forth.

To be honest, even I'm not convinced on courage.  I just got stuck when I got to indigo.   :oops:

Actually I think the remaining colors are limited to emotions.  According to the Zamarons, the Guardians rejected all emotion so it makes since they would focus on willpower as a trait that can be used to overcome them but isn't actually an emotion itself.

Protomorph

Actually, there are only two emotions: fear and love. In this case, love is more like universal acceptance than romance and passion (which would be the Star Sapphires).

I would think this color would be white, as it does contain all the colors. The opposite would be a Black Lantern, which would be fear, but not the same fear as the Sinestro peeps use, that of causing fear, closer to despair and unwillingness to face reality.

All of the other emotions stem from these. If one were using color codes from more spiritual pursuits, they would break down like this: Red wouldn't be anger or hate, per se, but passion in general (hatred is passionate dislike, yes?). Passion would also include romantic passion too. Blue is the energy of pacification, self protection, sweetness and tenderness, and of loyalty. Green is healing, Yellow is wisdom, Orange is the willpower color.

But, we know they aren't necessarily going by this, as green and yellow are clearly wrong.

The Hitman

Proto, you put a lot of thought into this, and your theroy makes sense. But, since the colors used thus far don't quite work with, I doubt there'll be any White Lanterns. But I do agree with you.

The next color, I bet, will be Blue... for Intellegence. And what previously- established character will be retconed into the "Blue Lantern," you ask? None other than Blue Beetle. Think about it- all three possessors of the Beetle Scarab had great intellegence (Dan Garrett a paleintoligist, Ted Kord a genious comuter whiz, and the new kid is smart, as far as I could tell.) The scarab in the Newb's back does what the kid thinks about. The scarab doesn't like Green Lanterns, which is pretty common, I guess. And, I think, recently, an entire town in New Mexico was "infected" by Beetle Scarabs, meaning there's more than one of them.

Beyond that... Red for Fiery, Burning Rage? Maybe they'll bring back Effigy and his Corps for this?

No. This is a much older knowledge.

It's funny: when I was like ten years old I had this idea for a rainbow selection of  Lanters after I read one of Sinestro's appearences in GL. Each one would be vulnerable to the color of one of the others.

yell0w_lantern

Okay, we have tasted the rainbow! The new ish of GL spilled the beans
Red = Rage - yet to be founded
Orange = Greed - yet to be founded
Yellow = Fear - active; founded by Sinestro
Green = Willpower - active; founded by the Guardians
Blue = Hope - founded by Ganthet and Sayd
Indigo = Compassion - yet to be founded; carry staves
Violet = Love - active; founded by Zamarons
Black = Death - founded by person or persons unknown apparently using the body of the Anti-monitor.
Mystik

the rings the black lanterns used has black hand's symbol

catwhowalksbyhimself

I'm assuming the blues will be on the greens side, maybe the indigos too, if they come into the picture, but it still looks like it's going to be tough going for the lanterns for a while.  I've got to read that last issue.

Sword

On that spoiler: Woot! Blue Lanterns!

murs47

Yeah...that's a lot of lanterns. I thought it was pretty cool how one of the blue-ish colored lanterns had a staff instead of a ring.

*adds more skins on to-do list*

Cardmaster

So wait... everyone's forming their own Corps and trying to recruit all the other members of the DC universe?

...this is starting to get a little silly...

...anyone got pics? ^_^

detourne_me

The first comic i ever remember buying was a crisis on infinite earths tie-in Green Lantern where Harbinger gets John Stewart,  and Guys a little ticked about it. and on the back cover had an add for reese's pieces. not quite skittles, but nevertheless the colours are reminding me of what's been happening to the GL story.... nah, i'm joking.  blue lanterns sound cool.  i wonder if they'll intereact with the wildstorm universe at all.  i think it was in the "terra obscura" trade, that the Planetary team was investigating a parallel earth JLA that had been manipulated,   a blue lantern was dissected and his power source was being used for something.
